Susannah tells him she will wait all her life if needed. As Tristan leaves on his horse, Susannah asks the others if they think he will ever come back.

What’s the movie Legends of the fall about?
In the early 1900s, Colonel Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins from Elephant Man and Meet Joe Black) and his three sons Alfred (Aidan Quinn from An Early Frost and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee), Tristan (Brad Pitt from Meet Joe Black and The Devil’s Own) and Samuel (Henry Thomas from E.T.), moved to a ranch in Montana. Samuel falls in love with Susannah (Julia Ormond from Temple Grandin), a young woman who immediately conquers his two brothers’ hearts. They become engaged, but Samuel is abruptly killed on the front during World War I. Alfred declares himself to Susannah, but she rejects him. Tristan also plans to marry her, but, traumatized by the death of his brother, he can't get involved in this relationship and decides to go traveling. Susannah makes the decision to return to Alfred, who by then became a congressman - much to the discontent of his father - and they marry. When Tristan finally returns, he marries Isabelle 2, the daughter of a family who has always lived on the ranch, and has two children with her. She is killed by corrupt policemen, and Tristan avenges her by killing them. Susannah commits suicide because she’s still in love with Tristan. Tristan is chased by the sheriff and his men because of his revenge, and he ends up alone with his father to confront them. The old man miraculously manages to eliminate the three policemen, but the sheriff is about to shoot the Ludlows, when he is killed unexpectedly. It is Alfred. Saving his family, he manages to reconcile with them. Tristan runs away, leaving his children to Alfred, to prevent reprisals. In closing, we see him dying old, confronting a bear, in 1963.

The shot of Isabel Two running alongside Tristan is what made the whole movie for me when I first watched it, and I still stand by it. The kind of admiration, understanding and faithfulness it takes to be like Isabel Two - true to herself, including in what she appreciates in Tristan - is remarkable.

Tristan was suffering from PTSD, Grief and Survivors Guilt/Guilt period. No Therapists there either. Another film with Beautiful Cinematography, Unforgettable Story & Cast, and equally perfect Musical Score. A movie that is a beautiful piece of art. Very well balanced.

It must be daunting to be the love interest opposite Brad Pitt. She has the challenge of 1. Can't let him be prettier than you. 2. Can't let him out-act you. 3. Can't let Brad Pitt, Aiden Quinn, and Anthony Hopkins outshine, out-dramatize or make the audience forget about you. Good luck. Julia Ormand. She pulls off what only a hand full of women on planet earth could have in that time and place. Her acting in this scene is so sublime, plus she's no screen hog over acting narcissist. Can you imagine getting to work with Julia Ormand? Those lucky bastards.
True, although I do think Pitt gets over praise in some movies, like this, where Quinn for me was the standout given that he had the tough role to play of the bitter, square peg if you will. Like with fight club, Pitts name appears first on the cover, yet Norton is in a league of his own with his performance, especially with those cold sweats he's having at the start.
This Movie turned me on to the Mountain West and its Beauty👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿 A Ranch in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Wyoming or Montana with the Rocky Mountains in the Background would be Amazing 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌺🌺🌺🌺🏔🏔🏔🏔

Anybody who still thinks Tristan loved Susannah should watch this scene. He barely even acknowledges her as she begs him to stay.
He’s pretty straightforward when she asks if he would still leave, if she was pregnant or they had a kid and he says yes. Do not ever be like Susannah.
Do not lose your dignity over someone who makes it obvious they do not or never will love you.
I am not sure... he is suffering from strong PTSD and that messes up the brain. I wouldn't be as certain as you are. But that's definitely not a sexy love story, I would be out....
Tristan didn’t care about Susannah
I always said this - the person that Tristan loved the most, that was the love of his life, was his little brother. It was Samuel. And he died when Samuel did. Susannah could never compete with that. And that's so interesting that Alfred points out that everyone loved Tristan the most, but Tristan loved SAMUEL the most.

Tristan was selfish in how he handled the situation with Susannah. However, you still feel for him because he didn't do things out of malice but too often out of impulse. He also just didn't know how to cope with his grief and trauma and even less how to express what he was thinking and feeling with Susannah.

When he came back he immediately married Isabel 2 because he loved her. He never did that to Susannah. Susannah should have just left that family alone the moment Samuel died.

Sometimes it’s better to remove yourself and regress to the wilderness than to cause others pain and suffering. Is it selfish to suffer alone and silently? To heal the way you know is best? Sadly, he was always faithful and she wasn’t.
At the end, he was rewarded with children with a much younger woman. Ultimately, something that would have never happened with her.
Removal of your presence can be preferable to causing other’s anguish and fathering children much later in life is possible if betrayed by barren women.
I don't know where to start with this.
It can be better to go away and heal if you're causing others pain. But Susannah's pain is not uppermost in Tristan's mind at this moment. It's his own with which he's consumed. Which makes sense - he's got a huge complex of guilt and PTSD to work through. And he doesn't want to rely on anyone to help him. He believes he's doing the best to protect Susannah, but he's also shutting her out.
Tristan is not faithful to Susannah during his travels. The film clearly shows him in bed with another woman shortly before he writes his letter to Susannah, telling her not to wait and hope for him anymore.
A woman who can't conceive is not "betraying" anyone. She simply can't have children. Susannah doesn't even know that she can't have children until she marries and tries to conceive with Alfred.

This whole relationship was forced and rediculous from the beginning. If the writer HAD to have them get together, then their relationship ahould have started off chaste, then after Samuel's death, they drifted into each others arms out of shared grief.
