Congratulations on making your way into my recommended. Absolutely stellar video. You've got me hooked and I'm excited to know what you have to say about the rest of the game
I think Pokey's commemts to Ness's mom is supposed to indicate his immaturity and how isn't taking his brother's disappearance as seriously as he should be. I always interpreted his quips to Ness's mom as sarcastic, rather than perverted.
pokey i feel is hinted to be a bit pervy tho, the elevator woman says dont stare at my hips, as if master pokey, who the elevator is for, stares at her hips
I don't think a player would assume that Pokey and Picky and Buzz Buzz are accompanying you for the whole game - because surely the "three boys and a girl" Buzz Buzz talks about are the four you name at the beginning of the game... would that not be evident from the start?
Certainly a case to be made, but someone new to the genre (which wasn’t popular in America at the time,) might not necessarily know those three named serve that purpose. But even if not, it doesn’t hurt anything at the very least.
In most games, especially more linear games with an main adventure, the first 10 minutes is one of the parts of the games with the most care and time into theme. Got to make a good first impression!
Great video! I love in-depth analyses like this, and you do an excellent job of making believable connections for things that might otherwise sound like stretches. In the spirit of this type of analysis, I had an additional thought about Tracy's room, to add on to your own points. 2:15 The red ribbons of the present do indeed make for an eye-catching color in the room of pink, but that isn't the only red in the room. Tracy's sprite also has prominent reddish tones, which is notable considering she's the other major sprite of interest in the room. In fact, not only are both Tracy and the present red and white, but they even both sport a red bow and red stripes (the ribbon for the present, the overall straps for Tracy) specifically. A player is likely to be drawn immediately to Tracy upon entering, and would probably assume that they should interact with her, due to her uniqueness as a humanlike and moving sprite. As they go over to interact with her, it is also likely that the present will appear on screen around when talking to Tracy-if not, then exploring the room will soon reveal it regardless. The player has then been taught that Tracy can be interacted with, so this unique sprite not only encourages checking on its own merits and prominence, but also due to its shared design elements with the important NPC that they just met. I've never really thought much about the nuance of Tracy's design (other than how amazing her clay model is), but thinking about it this way, it seems genuinely possible that her design took conscious inspiration from the presents. I don't see much other reason why she'd receive these specific visual traits (other than that bows and overalls are cute; which is true, of course, but it's fun to think that there's more thought behind it than just that, right?)
17:59 i haven’t seen the future episodes in this series yet, so i don’t know if you mention it later on, but one of the things i think you missed about the Starman Junior fight is that it’s the first fight where the funky background crosses the full screen instead of just the middle slice like all the other enemies. it is an additional clue to the player that something is different about this fight, and sets up the recurring pattern of this happening with the bosses of the game
I need the rest of this analysis to exists so I can play the whole game for the 15th time without having to deal with the drudgery of the damn monkey caves.
12:00 In my culture snakes are benefactors gods providing fertility and renovation, also associated with agriculture, sexuality and knowledge. In a second tough my country is the only one in world history to worship Snakes, others cultures portrait is mostly evil or in thrusting but my country is the one with more variety of snakes in the world so, there is that. 🤔 The snake is even in the national flag.
I thought it was pretty well rated. A lot of people know about Earthbound and most of them know that it is a good game. At least, more people like it than not.
@@animatepokemonadventures7889 As a fairly recent fan, I'm happy at the amount of critical and fan recogniton it's gotten in recent years. Lots of people are discovering this game all the time. Toby Fox and his Undertale game deserve great kudos for bringing attention to it. It keeps influencing media.
@Scratchy Truly? Seems to me it gets so much attention all the time, fan tributes, iceberg videos, reddit communities, entire YT channels like this one dedicated to parsing out the content. Hardly a footnote, I'd say, more like a library! In fact, there've been written several actual books on EarthBound, such as Clive Mandelin's Legends of Localization and Ken Baumann's Boss Fight monograph.
I love that part with sunrise it feels like the games telling you: “and that was just the beginning!”
WHY DID THE ENDING SUNRISE ALMOST MAKE ME CRY OF NOSTALGIA 😭

Why hello there, niche internet microcelebrity.
ITS YOU

I partly agree. Think it's a mix of both.
pokey i feel is hinted to be a bit pervy tho, the elevator woman says dont stare at my hips, as if master pokey, who the elevator is for, stares at her hips
@@flipflopnerd4759oh wow I never interpreted it that way. I just thought Ness thought she was pretty haha

Please keep up these great Mother videos! They’re much appreciated.
I‘m way past impressed with what you can find/read out if this game, even if it’s just the first 10 minutes

When I first played, I accidentally dropped the bread roll so I knew what it did. I felt pissed at the time but later was glad to know it existed.

It's in the works :)
Loving this series
You earned another sub. Very detailed video on such a great game
I am not first, but not last too, so what place am I in? Who knows~
maybe you're third? but that can't be right... I'M third!!!
we all know your not ninth, cause that's me
Probably somewhere between the second and fourth…
This reads like an actual Earthbound dialogue box.
Well, checking newest and going down, you seem to have commented first, so let's just say you are first
14:45 Sans is doing WHAT with mom???
Very interesting analysis!
cant tell if this is a tutorial, or just a fun video.
Signs point to both!!
14:45 hehe funny skeleton
earthbound but real
yknow, are the red swirls an allusion to giygas? probably not, but it's interesting
good video :)
I know it's just how it was translated in the original Earthbound, but Porky being called "Pokey" just feels so... wrong, haha.
part 3 when?
Working on it :)
Aloysius is pronounced “al oh WISH us.” Also, I was horrified and sad when buzz buzz died. RIP to a real one. It was like a slap in the face.😢😂
10:11 Not true. Dragon Quest, one of Mother's biggest inspirations, had your party following you physically as early as the 2nd game.
Point was it was very uncommon.

Wow.
Sans visiting Mom
porky never annoyed me for some reason
earthbound is the most underrated game ever
I wouldn’t say it’s the most underrated, far from it, tho it’s still a fantastic game either way.
