A lovely tune for the national holiday!
You’re right there, Irish soldiers have distinguished themselves not only in the British army but across Europe and beyond (Spain and France have had Irish regiments through the centuries, and Irish soldiers fought on both sides in the American Civil War.) You mentioned Wellington… during the siege of Cuidad Rodrigo he sent the Highlanders to “storm the breach” in the city walls (a suicidal action famously known as the “forlorn hope”.) The Highlanders were brave but were overwhelmed with casualties and couldn’t get through. Returning to their lines battered and wounded, they passed their replacement, the Connaught Rangers, marching the other way. The Rangers stormed the breach and the city was taken. Some say the Rangers succeeded because they knew the city contained hundreds of barrels of port and brandy 😀
and as an Englishman I'd gladly have a drink with you for not leaving an offensive comment. Regardless of what our views might be we all live on these islands together and I'd wish we'd all just put the past behind us and live in peace.

United Kingdom is Briton and Ireland(two kingdoms united), Britain is England, Wales and Scotland. Ireland's biggest was leaving the union. I am a proud Connemara man joining The Micks!
The band on the cap is another way of identifying the regiment, green in this case for the Irish guards, Red for the grenadiers, white for the Coldstream, red/white chequered squares for the Scots and no band for the Welsh.
Yeah I've that argument before about Ireland still exporting food. It is a fact that food was exported from Ireland at the time of the famine, however this was not conscious decision taken by the British government or it's people. It was in fact a decision taken by each individual food producing or transporting businessman. The poor had no money to buy the food, those in England did, so the Irish who were producing food had a choice, give it to the starving Irish or sell it to the English.
Statement makes absolutely no sense? Why would real irishmen! Not the plastic planters. Fight for a country that has only tried to oppress them? Stupid comment!
I'm telling you that you don't know about/understand Ireland because you literally don't. I'm also Irish so I think I'm in a good position to tell you that. They join the army because it's a career, because they travel the world, because they are loyal to the crown, because they don't see anywhere else for them to find work, some join because they want to see a fight, yes, but that's only one reason out of many. Irishmen have been fighting in the British army since the Kingdom of--
1812 the British burnt Washington to the ground, the american army fired a few shots then ran for the hills the incident Johnny Horton sang about was down to the French who as in the war of 1776 had to rescue the yanks,Rule Brittania
I'd wager most are from Northern Ireland with a good few from the Republic and areas such as Liverpool where there's a lot of people with Irish ancestry.
Those are the pipers, since they are the Irish Guards of the British Army they wear Irish uniforms, at least the pipers, it sort of is their way of saying they are the Irish, like how the Scots Guards Pipers wear kilts.
@Oliver O'Donovan ohh i see.. according to me he should havr marched seperately because hes uniform is the only one different from the rest of the platoon 😄
-- Ireland declaration in 1542. Not since 1800. Where did you get that figure? Go the the Wikipedia page 'Irish military diaspora' for info on and reasons why Irishmen joined the British army. From that page: "A significant number of Irish people, of all backgrounds, have served in the forces of the British Crown over the centuries. By the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, well over one-half of the military forces of the British Army consisted of Irishmen"
I enjoyed watching that video, and, with respect, noted the combat medals on the soldiers' chests, their very smart appearance and proud bearing, and I've read a few armchair 'warriors' on here naff comments disrespecting the British Army's Irish Guards. If given the opportunity, I bet not one of the them would have the guts to get off their arses, face one of these soldiers and repeat their comments.
Is that why England sent over grain and food supplies to Ireland at the height of the famine? The reason the famine was so devastating in Ireland was because we were so dependent on potatoes. The average farm labourer would have potatoes for every main meal. England/Scotland were not hit as badly because they had other foodstuffs which could replace the potato.
They don't publicly display names and religions of officers for everyone to see because it would make them and their families targets, not because they don't exist. Men from Ireland that do join the British army are treated exactly the same as every other soldier in the army. If you think they're merely mercenaries and they have no pride to fight for Britain etc. then you do not understand Ireland and you do not realise that not every Irishman is a devout England hating republican.
The IRA shouldn't affect you're loyalty one way or the other. You can still be loyal to the crown or believe in complete independence without bloodshed.
In any case, even if you disagree with the British government at the time's decision to stick by their free market policy, it is absolutely ridiculous to call it 'ethnic cleansing' or a 'genocide'. No top Irish historian has come to that conclusion because it just wasn't like that.
We could ask were the Irish treated differently to others in the UK as they were Irish and I would say no. If we look at the Lancashire Cotton Famine of 1862 where thousands lost their source of income (due to the US civil war) central government did not intervene. It was left up to the local parish councils and locally established welfare organisations to mitigate the harsh effects this had on the poor. So I do not think the British acted unfairly to the Irish.
They are not Guardsmen, they are attached arms .i.e. Clarks, Cheifs, REME, the PTI and a Royal Marine. They still celebrate the day with the Micks and march with the Companys they are attached to. As for the band they dont ever march in their Forage caps while playing.
It was join or starve. It was British policy not to industrialize Ireland apart from the Protestant North East. Ireland was seen as competition for Britain. Pop of Ireland in 1841 over 8.5 million, pop of Britain 12 million. Jobs had to be kept for the British. It was a deliberately policy to keep Ireland poor. Plus the imported goods from abroad came through Irish ports so that the importation taxes were paid by the Irish people, thereby the producers bought the goods for cost.
@@steveellis9065 When a soldier leaves the regiment his tunic is cleaned, repaired if necessary at the tailors shop and re-issued to a a soldier joining the regiment at least that’s what happened when I joined the Coldstream Guards in 1963. Why is it ridiculous? In 1841 & again in 1851 a national census took place. but they refused to record the names of the famine dead. Food was in plentiful supply and out of the country. The potatoe crop failed throughout Europe & as most people, not just the Irish, were dependent on it, other European countries closed their ports to prohibit food from being exported, something Britain could easily have done. It chose not to because they wanted to clear Ireland of the Irish.

This comment perfectly demonstrates your lack of understanding of Irish politics. Not everyone has the same mindset as you. How is that so hard for you to understand? Why would they be loyal to a foreign head of state? Because to them, that head of state is not foreign. I understand that you're a Republican and I understand the Republican mindset and at times can sympathise so why can you not accept that not everyone's a Republican? Why shouldn't it? It's easy for anyone, Protestant or Catholic to hate the IRA for what they did do innocent people (Protestant and Catholic) in Northern Ireland. Hating the IRA could easily translate into refusing to support the ideas which they support.
The appalling knowledge of history on this page shocks me. There were historically 3 kingdoms, as thought of in England, of the British crown: England, Scotland and Ireland.
While I have great respect for the Irish Gaurds, I am afraid that a lot of Irish people do not, and for complicated reasons that reflect not specifically on the Gaurds themselves but on the entire British army. There are a few reasons for this that most British people do not know. There are many horror stories in Ireland about historically verified atrocities carried out by the British army (the land war)/ British army veterans (black and tans) against Irish civilians. It must also be noted that although the Irish did contribute majorly to British victories like the battle of Waterloo, at that time specifically, Irish people’s rights were extremely restricted by the Penal laws, enforced often by British troops. Also the majority of Irish people had supported an effort to remove British rule from Ireland in 1798, in which 30,000 Irish people, mostly civilians, died at the hands of British troops. This is not to mention the Great famine which took place only a few decades later, during which British army troops were tasked with guarding food that was still being exported from Ireland despite the millions dying from starvation. So, although I have great respect for the Irish Guards and the British army as a whole, I think it is important that British people know why, for the reasons I have listed (along with a lot more) the British army has a mostly negative reputation in Southern Ireland.
They would if we so chose! The British Empire may have been given anway by liberals since WWII but if the Lions wake again and decide to do some real fighting you'd know about it.. Sadly people don't fight wars like they used to (i.e. killing every last man woman and child) - this is the only way to utterly defeat & subdue an enemy. Not that I wish this upon the Irish, I'm half Paddy myself & love Ireland, but even in is weakened state the UK would kick your arses & there are plenty LOYAL Irish.

Firstly, my comment was just playful chiding. Secondly, the incident I speak of was the battle of New Orleans in 1815. Gen. Pakenham was commanding British forces, and Gen. Andrew Jackson commanding American. The American order of battle had about 1,000 US army regulars under Jackson while the rest of his troops were made up of volunteer militia from the Southern states and Baratarian pirates. In all Jackson had no more than 4,000 American troops. The British has over 12,000.
Don't make comments if your not bothered reading the replies the relate too. You display an appalling knowledge of history. Catholics did not serve in positions of power until the 1800s and even then they were the exception. Britain kept Catholics poor right into the 1800s and did nothing to rectify the situation they created in doing so after they had granted Catholic emancipation. Fact. And don't brand me a nationalist. I'm from Dublin and those terms ceased to be used after Independence
Learn history and stop commenting in ignorance. Any decent study of the 1800s (the first century when poor Irishmen were on paper equal to poor English) will show you that Westminister only reacted to poverty in Britain and never directly to Ireland. Whenever there was an issue with poverty in the UK and they took action,m they applied the exact same to Ireland, even though it often was to the detriment of the Irish eg. the creation of the poor law unions. Learn history and stop you ignorance.

Except in Ireland 95% of the land was owned by British Protestant absent landlords who rarely if ever visited their Irish properties. They were responsible for funding the Poor Law. Instead they evicted people onto the side of the road to avoid the expense, whether or not they were in arrears. Tell me, where were people supposed to go. Did over a million and a half English, Scots and Welsh die during those years? Food meant for Ireland was diverted to Scotland as they had to be fed first.
If they are NI fine, if they are from the Rep, they are mercenaries. Those from the Rep wouldn't be entitled to British citizenship so it's nonsensical to claim otherwise. More scousers in that regiment than there is in Liverpool.
John Dowd mainly Irish from the island
My father a Galway man used to say that Liverpool is the capital of Ireland.
Name one Irish Officer.
Duke of Wellington. Lord Wellesley.
Upa Micks!
Serving in a foreign army.
@@irishtrapper9149 it's a very foreign army pal, we never fought with you out of choice, the Irish were forced to fight against their will be a country known as England who forced its will whilst using the tools of murder, rape tyranny and oppression to make others do their bidding people like yourself and Dave above have a lovely way of sugar coating bullshit to make it sound like your time in Ireland was all croquet at breakfast polo after lunch and teatime on the lawns pre supper, ohh what a glorious picture you paint of how we were all pals tucking each other into bed at night and executing us all at dawn. You can talk as much bollox as you like and ye can kid and cajole yourselves into pretending this lot is our lot but they most certainly are not, how many times do you have to be told your up to your necks in Irish blood, you waded through rivers of the stuff as you tried to destroy our country and culture, you raped and murdered our women and children yet today ohh how wonderful and glorious it is to see an Irish regiment that isn't Irish in a foreign army doing the bidding of the colonialist masters!! It fuckin kills you to know we don't accept your polluted diluted identity and it kills you to know that being British means nothing to no one with sense. We are not you and you are not us. Sticking an Irish wolfhound on parade with a few plastic pretend micks does not make this Irish in the true sense if the word! Britain must be the only union in the world that has for different nationalities in its army one which is false when the rest of the world does not,, kid yourselves all day long but these guys are Marching for the British army and that makes them foreign as Ireland does not recognise them, again you steal a culture that's not fuckin yours, aren't you embarrassed to leech our culture and act like parasites feeding of our heritage.. 311 years of a union does not surpass several thousand years of Celtic/Gaelic diaspora. Your existence compared to other nations is but a drop in the ocean.. You can class this how ye wish but no Irish person will ever give it recognition. The British are great at kidding themselves that's for sure, maybe that's why your called Great Britain cos your great at nicking other people's shit, that's why we call you cuckoo's...
What evidence is this based on? There's nothing stopping an Irish Catholic attending Sandhurst and becoming an officer in the British Army. That's a complete lie.
Not cannon, cavalry* rather
without britain ireland no more
I thought you had to be 6ft or over to be in the guard's. There are some short arses amongst this bunch.
There are now women in the guards regiments where before women had only been limited to the bands of the household division.
The poor bloody wolfhound looks miserable (even with his raincoat).
IRISH SOLDIERS SALUTE HER MAJESTY, QUEEN ELIZABETH II Of the United Kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Wales. God Save the Noble Queen. Long Live the UK. Long Live the Triple Monarchy. Let Ireland Be Irish Again. GreenmanPA.
You sure got that right!!
Yes I know. However the rest of the island is called IRELAND
We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin' on
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
Nah, that's the natural habitat of you and yours. lol
Michael WhiteBet you learnt a lot of your history in elementary school;.Amazing what you can learn from a old John Wayne orAudie Murphy films on how the West was won in the name of freedom So I suggest that you jog on me old china.I say china because I didn't want to upset you by using the word Vietnam as that was another campaign the US made a mess of and ran home with their tails between their legs;do font rant to me about imperialism please
Dave Scott were you there❓
Except in Ireland 95% of the land was owned by British Protestant absent landlords who rarely if ever visited their Irish properties.
How do you feel about British citizens joining the Taliban? Or British troops deserting to join the Taliban?
Your to narrow minded to distinguish between Republican and IRA by assuming that Irish = republican IRA.
The Kingdom of.... you'll have to spell that one out. Mind reading is not my strong point.
Fool. Ireland is not in the UK - being from Connemara doesn't make it so or make it or doesn't make you an expert on Ireland. You name doesn't sound very much like a Connemara name to me.
1.5 million didn't.
The Irish Famine - The first genocide in Europe.
Again another republican troll following the micks video's with the rewright of history
Bullshit
Yes its time to move on. And part of that moving on involves the British army recognising Ireland is independent - and therefore stop using the term Irish
The troll raises it's head again on a different download
lol, try to know further young grasshopper. Perhaps sharp as a pen you are not.
Grow up, and stop this backward immature sectarian nonsense. Ireland is not part of the UK. The UK came into existence with the union of Scotland and England (Wales at the time was officially seen in London as part of England)
Northern Ireland is part of the UK
1:22 A black irish ! Lol
Loyalty to your German queen's shilling more like. But then you are not Irish.
HAHAHA Irish Soldiers will never salute to the queen none will any Irish people
Yes its time to move on. And part of that moving on involves the British army recognising Ireland is independent - and therefore stop using the term Irish
