We had a lot of comments saying people who live on narrowboats don't need to buy a TV Licence. This is incorrect. By law, residential boat owners need a TV Licence to watch live television (any channel), or catch-up TV on the BBC iPlayer (which we do). This is true no matter what device is used, how the programmes are received, or whether the boat is cruising or moored. Just found your channel! Thinking of getting a boat but I’d mainly be on my own. Fantastic channel and really well communicated. Love the humour and positive vibes!
Two people living on £1000 a month? You guys are doing great, a seemingly nice life together on a beautiful boat, you can really manage your money... I’m impressed !

Hi, my distant friends. Bruce from Nor California here. I had told you before, I was a tugboat Captain for 39 years. Part of that time, I was a well recognized Marine Surveyor. I need to compliment your blog. Since Silver Foxes build, I have been weekly viewing your experiences with a great appreciation as to the amount of work you guy put into your professional results. I don't comment on videos much but it was finally time. Being one who was in the television business for many years, I am totally impressed with the production values of your vlogs. Excellent editing; use of B roll; use of audio. Very professionally done! Cheers from the upper midwest of the U.S.!
An informative (and entertaining) look at what it costs to run a narrowboat. I guess the costs can be comparable to running a medium-sized house, but on a narrowboat the scenary is always changing and is so much more beautiful. Cannot put a price on that. Thanks for another great one.

The cost of depreciation/replacement of the boat must be a big item to put into the list. And if one day you need to be back on land there is the problem that bricks and mortar are likely to have gone up in price as the narrow boat has gone down - not literally! You might be stuck if you didn’t have a significant amount of money put aside. Looks like a great life and it’s great to see how you look after one another.
The price of our boat has increased significantly over the last two years, bucking the myth that all boat prices always go down. The list is our outgoings, hence depreciation doesn't form part of that because the value has actually increased.

Marina fees are a massive chunk out of the budget we pay just over 3k a year but are moving to a different canal with cheaper moorings, it's alot to pay just to hook up. Great vlog once again brilliant info x
Sorry if this is a repeat (I’m watching later, and don’t have time to scroll through almost 850 comments to see if it’s been said yet...), but, I love how at both 1:16 and 16:49, that lovely goose was willing to give Narrowboat Silver Fox a short tow! 😉😆
What about medical/dental/eye care costs? Prescriptions? Your humor is infectious....both be safe..looking forward to spring and the spring bloom of flowers. Do people along the canal plant flowers just for the boaters? Are there special displays or just a natural thing?

Something I have always wanted to do even though I have never stepped on a canal boat!, the wife was going to book a weeks holiday on a canal boat but the cost was crazy, so thanks for a very informative video and I can carry on dreaming :)
I LOVE y'alls' travel-vlogs! In a dark room. On a 30 inch screen. In real life, I am 85 to 90% blind, but The Plague has given me a chance to "work up to my new circumstance". I WISH I could SEE in real life. Cheers, guys.
Very interesting stuff. One thing we don't have to worry about here is heating. The average temp is around 25℃ so staying warm is not really a problem. When we were still in the UK it was around £300.00 for oil and eletricity a month in the winter! Crazy. Good stuff guys, thanks.
Thanks a lot guys, very informative, it would be nice if the U.S. had a canal system we could enjoy. Finding the right boat at the right price is the key,$12,000 a year for peace, freedom from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and fewer taxes is well worth the annual fees. Enjoyed the video, you are all looking good including Otis :), looking forward to the next video take care.
Really enjoyed the info on costs afloat. Glad you put up the list at the end. Visuals of this type of info is always good. I'm sure this will be of great help to those thinking about life afloat - especially some of the things one might not have considered: engine maintenance; unexpected emergencies and such. Look forward to your vlogs every week, and often rewatch various pervious episodes. Cheers.......
It’s been refreshing to watch this blog warts and all about how much it costs to be on your boat for a year . It’s a quality watch please keep them coming
Thanks guys, coming back to England in a few months and have been planning on buying a narrowboat, living permanently on the canals. This vlog has made me feel very, very much better about my own calculations / estimates. Yes I understand its your estimates and mine will be different.....experience will tell. Take care Steve
I have no idea how algorithm works but your video just dropped by other random videos I was watching but I was glad of the break of getting angry about vaccine and covid, lol. You both seem like lovely lads. I had watched river boat journey on TV for years. I did always wonder how much it would cost to live on a river boat. Thanks for those tips.

Love to you both and thanks for mentioning my name the other night XXX
You missed out "Shaun's Guinness and Red Wine" fund. Trrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnn!!!! Nice to see you're now Channel 5 stars too. Definitely the best channel on UA-cam. Stay safe guys.
This is a valued bit of information for those lucky enough to be able to live on a narrowboat. I haven't heard anyone living on one that is on oxygen 24/7...oh, to have lived my life as full as you two are...,,love you both and Otis too XOX
Your 11,600 British Pounds comes out to about 16,000 US Dollars. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. If I ever get over there, I'll just move in with ya'll though. Pay my weekly dues and it'll all be good. And I wouldn't take up much room on the couch! LOL Very informative and entertaining!
Very interesting as I compared my sedentary living expenses to your travelling boating expenses - but I don’t get to travel to all those lovely places you do and enjoy the scenery - much envy guys! From Brisbane Australia.
Cheers Guys, You have given us much food for thought. We have a share in a boat currently and love our time on the cut but the plan is to retire at 55 (only 5 years to go) and buy our own boat. Its been a realisation over the pandemic that working till you drop v living a quality life is the key decision. Were going for the latter. Like you two we aim to continuously cruise so this vlog of all your vlogs has been really useful. We love all of your vlogs. Keep up the great work showcasing our amazing canal network. If we pass on the cut we will give you a wave. Mike & Pete.
I missed the start yesterday but I really enjoyed watching it all over again.. it’s been so useful knowing about all of the little things that make up life afloat.
I was curious about the whole canal boat thing in the UK and found your channel. You two seem like you are really enjoying your canal/narrow boat life, and that is awesome. Thanks for sharing your experiences here and safe travels to you.
I've seen other people doing it for half this , not saying anything negative against t foxes afloat, they're vids are great , just saying don't give up your dream , maybe it's possible
@@PeterBlackwood Now you say that Peter & we can all agree the cost of the rope needed and replacement costs isn't that much BUT the money they want for those 'Duck Wrangling Courses' is daylight robbery i tell ya!
Excellent video. Shows the true picture of expenses of boat life. Hopefully stopping people looking through rose tinted glasses. Friend of mine said its only when you own one you learn the real meaning of the acronym boat (blown off another though). Well done guys.
You guys painted a picture of a Rolodex of envelopes full of cash with each one marked for a specific expense and one marked SURPRISE EXPENSE. Your system is as good as anyone’s. I’m afraid I’d have an envelope marked PUBS, WINE, BEER, CHIPS, SCOTCH and that just might be the thickest envelope. Good video it sounds like you have your ducks in a row!
Looked like you and the goose were having a race, lol. There are a lot of things to take into consideration as far as your budget goes. But then again, if you live in a house or apartment you have to do the same thing. So nice to see that your weather is starting to improve, wish ours was here in Eastern Canada. Sail on boys, looking forward to next weeks video. Take care of yourselves.
I reckon you should look into a LiPo4 swap if you are replacing your batteries that often, they are more expensive up front (might also need alternator modification or change) but cheaper in the long run, both because they last much longer and because they have more useable capacity so you can fit smaller ones. I replaced four 12v lead acids with one 24v drop in replacement (which is not the cheapest option) for about 50% extra on the cost of new lead acids, works better on the solar as it can charge much faster and so far performs much better too although my old lead acids were well beyond their best.
Even when the show is about math (maths for the non-Americans), it's still entertaining. My husband and I will be retiring soon to the American version of narrow boating--RVing. Your videos are applicable to the road too! Love you three!
Love this just found it will catch up with all the others as soon as I can your fabulous the figures surprised me but definately worth some investigation
That looks like an amazing life style, I’ve been living in a house for past 26 years, but with recent times I’m looking for something more adventurous. I’ve been thinking about the vanlife movement, and bought a van and did basic conversion. But with that it’s finding somewhere to park up and camp and stuff, but thinking about something more alternative life on a canal boat looks very tempting. Amazing video about detailing the costs keep living your best life 👍

Pps great outtakes, especially Traaaaaaa-in (TM) and get a survey and "then get your head read"
Andy
haha! Yeah, Shaun shouting TRRRAAAAIIIN! 😂 Happy counting down to retirement!
Good luck with that "Couple of years" wait mate...
Something I have always wanted to do even though I have never stepped on a canal boat!, the wife was going to book a weeks holiday on a canal boat but the cost was crazy, so thanks for a very informative video and I can carry on dreaming :)
Yeah, the costs are stupid at the moment!
I LOVE y'alls' travel-vlogs! In a dark room. On a 30 inch screen. In real life, I am 85 to 90% blind, but The Plague has given me a chance to "work up to my new circumstance". I WISH I could SEE in real life. Cheers, guys.
Glad we can help in whatever way 👍🏻💜
Very interesting stuff. One thing we don't have to worry about here is heating. The average temp is around 25℃ so staying warm is not really a problem. When we were still in the UK it was around £300.00 for oil and eletricity a month in the winter! Crazy.
Good stuff guys, thanks.
Yeah, gotta keep warm 😝
I love your accent gents, especially the word 'budget' comes out great!
Thanks so much! 😂
Thanks so much, Harold! x
Cool seeing the Maori Language on a narrow boat, Koha Aroha, the gift of love :) Loved this vid, thank you so much.
Our pleasure!
Glad it was helpful!
It’s been refreshing to watch this blog warts and all about how much it costs to be on your boat for a year . It’s a quality watch please keep them coming
Thanks, Ian. We'll try 👍🏻
Thanks guys, coming back to England in a few months and have been planning on buying a
narrowboat, living permanently on the canals.
This vlog has made me feel very, very much better about my own calculations / estimates.
Yes I understand its your estimates and mine will be different.....experience will tell.
Take care Steve
Have fun and enjoy every second of it all 👍🏻
Really useful for us as our boat will be ready in June and we plan to cruise continuously. Thank you for that 👍😁
Our pleasure, Karen
I have no idea how algorithm works but your video just dropped by other random videos I was watching but I was glad of the break of getting angry about vaccine and covid, lol. You both seem like lovely lads. I had watched river boat journey on TV for years. I did always wonder how much it would cost to live on a river boat. Thanks for those tips.
Welcome aboard!
I'm in the U.S. and I've never seen these boats. I didn't know any of this existed until your video. I really enjoyed your positivity. Xoxo.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another great Friday night viewing, much more interesting and entertaining than TV, looking forward to next week!!!
Thanks, Patricia!
Not many people can make a budget discussion sound entertaining. Thanks
Haha! Thanks for saying it sounded entertaining 👍🏻😂💜
The guy on the tow path was giving you a very funny look. Great vlog as always, it’s surprising how it all mounts up.
Ah, we get a LOT of funny looks,. Douglas 😂
I love how Otis is always hanging over the edge and looking at things.
So inquisitive!
@@FoxesAfloat This is my first visit to your channel. I guess Otis is the dog. Lol Thoroughly enjoyed what I have watched and will probably watch your earlier work. My son is on the Autistic Spectrum so can relate to your world.
Hugs to you guys and your pup. Thank you for the information. I enjoy your work so much.
Thank you so much!
I don't own a boat but still found the video interesting, always look forward to my Friday evenings when I sit down after a hard day's work with a nice cup of coffee and watch you guy's, make me laugh so much just what people need at the moment. Love to you both and thanks for mentioning my name the other night XXX
No problem. Thank you! x
Great video 👌🏾 came for the content, stayed for the creators. Happy, safe sailing.
Much appreciated!
Love it ! All of your filming is on a professional level .and it is still improving !
Thanks so much!
You missed out "Shaun's Guinness and Red Wine" fund.
Trrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnn!!!!
Nice to see you're now Channel 5 stars too. Definitely the best channel on UA-cam. Stay safe guys.
Haha! Thanks, Gaz!
This is a valued bit of information for those lucky enough to be able to live on a narrowboat. I haven't heard anyone living on one that is on oxygen 24/7...oh, to have lived my life as full as you two are...,,love you both and Otis too XOX
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Funny no way would I think of living on a narrow boat but I found this so interesting. Just pure escapism I expect thank you for the escape!
Nothing wrong with escapism. That's why we do these vlogs, to show people exactly what it's like 👍🏻
Your 11,600 British Pounds comes out to about 16,000 US Dollars. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. If I ever get over there, I'll just move in with ya'll though. Pay my weekly dues and it'll all be good. And I wouldn't take up much room on the couch! LOL Very informative and entertaining!
haha! bring cake and money, you'll be fine 😂
Very interesting as I compared my sedentary living expenses to your travelling boating expenses - but I don’t get to travel to all those lovely places you do and enjoy the scenery - much envy guys! From Brisbane Australia.
Thanks, Veronica. Brisbane sounds proper nice though ☀️
Hi from Tennessee, USA, I always enjoy watching you guys on Friday night. Thanks for always making me smile and laugh :) Have a great weekend!
Thank you! You too!
Good luck for the future xxx
I missed the start yesterday but I really enjoyed watching it all over again.. it’s been so useful knowing about all of the little things that make up life afloat.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was curious about the whole canal boat thing in the UK and found your channel. You two seem like you are really enjoying your canal/narrow boat life, and that is awesome. Thanks for sharing your experiences here and safe travels to you.
Welcome aboard!
Thank you for this film it has been very helpful. I doubt my pension will go far enough. Bless you both.
Our pleasure!
I've seen other people doing it for half this , not saying anything negative against t foxes afloat, they're vids are great , just saying don't give up your dream , maybe it's possible
Loved the shot of Narrowboat Silver Fox being towed by a duck - (couldn't quite see the rope)
Haha! We trained him well 😉
@@FoxesAfloat and it would really help cut your fuel costs
@@PeterBlackwood Now you say that Peter & we can all agree the cost of the rope needed and replacement costs isn't that much BUT the money they want for those 'Duck Wrangling Courses' is daylight robbery i tell ya!
@@C2K777 and the accumulation of RSPCA fines would be crippling
@@PeterBlackwood *RSPB surely 😉
Every time, every week, you make me smile. Thank you.
Aww, thanks Gavin! x
Sounds like a fantastic envelope 🤣🤣🤣
Looked like you and the goose were having a race, lol. There are a lot of things to take into consideration as far as your budget goes. But then again, if you live in a house or apartment you have to do the same thing. So nice to see that your weather is starting to improve, wish ours was here in Eastern Canada. Sail on boys, looking forward to next weeks video. Take care of yourselves.
Same to you, Curt!
You guys never fail to bring a smile to my face. What a double act! A match made in vaudeville.... ?
Hehe! Cheers, Andy!
Ah, another couple of years before we go there but thanks! 👍🏻
Even when the show is about math (maths for the non-Americans), it's still entertaining. My husband and I will be retiring soon to the American version of narrow boating--RVing. Your videos are applicable to the road too! Love you three!
That is awesome! Thanks guys!
Hey you mucking with my head sitting on other side of table, and thanks for full info and entertainment. 🏴Roo
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love this just found it will catch up with all the others as soon as I can your fabulous the figures surprised me but definately worth some investigation
That looks like an amazing life style, I’ve been living in a house for past 26 years, but with recent times I’m looking for something more adventurous. I’ve been thinking about the vanlife movement, and bought a van and did basic conversion. But with that it’s finding somewhere to park up and camp and stuff, but thinking about something more alternative life on a canal boat looks very tempting. Amazing video about detailing the costs keep living your best life 👍
Take a canal hire boat out and give it a try 👍👍👍👍
Hi from Pennsylvania USA...such fun to watch you guys...your natural casual style is very soothing. Always wondered what that lifestyle would be like. Thanks for the laughs and info...God bless.
Thank you so much!
Hi Colin & Sean I have missed the last 100 episodes due to the virus and bereavement but have just watched this & the next vid and all I can say is I have missed you guys. You are two warm & genuinly nice people and this shows with your massive following. Hi guys just turned into your channel for the first time and I have subscribed and looking forward to seeing more videos keep up the good work
Thank you for joining us, Vivien. Welcome to our channel ❤️❤️❤️
Is Colin's secret cupboard filling up with the £20 notes he didn't tell Shaun about ? 😜
Haha! It's contents make him smile much more than money does 💦
@@FoxesAfloat love the comment guys
How Much? "You cant say that!!" 😝😝 Honestly this is the best channel on UA-cam 👍
Here here!
😂
What a life style and affordable, thank you gents for explaining especially those costs non boaters would think of and producing another great vlog.
Our pleasure!
