Simpler Version
1. Click and hold at the same time "Menu" & "Volume Up"
2. Make sure that the remote your trying to pair is near the "Apple TV Device"
3. At the right hand corner of your "Apple TV" screen will and should say if you have paired it

I have two Apple remotes and cannot get either to sync. Letting them get a full recharge tonight and try again tomorrow. Also, if that doesn’t work I plan to program an old DVD remote.

You probably don't need to pair with your TV you just point to it and try raising the volume, it should work actually.

2 suggestions for the Apple TV remote.
1. the remote is soooo sensitive that I find myself barely touching it by mistake and then my show or movie gets interrupted and mistakenly fast forward or rewind, or I'm taken back to home screen, etc., There should be a feature where you can completely lock the remote so it basically turns off all the buttons. Does this happen to anyone else?
2. I lose that freaking control all the time, there should be a "find my remote" feature like "TILE" where it makes it sound or beep so you don't have to rearrange your whole living room trying to find it.
