  • Probably the weirdest record as far as the story behind it I own!
Apollo Stars - Power Of Source
private press, released by L.Ron Hubbard
    Amazing L. Ron Hubbard
Scientology funky jazz ensemble from '74, all over the place with a great garage "playing over
our heads" feel. The fact that this band was assembled to gather recruits with free "rock concerts"
round the world makes it even better.
Recorded on the Apollo ship which the Scientologists lived
on in the early 70's cuz they where banned from about every country around the globe. look at them
    now!
I've included some text files, one except from a book on Hubbard talking about how screwed up
the situation was around this band and how folks thought they where the CIA when they'd pull into
port and play on the deck of the ship.
    Awsome stuff.

I really could care less what people say about our album...pro or con. All I know it was a ton of fun making it. The flute player Kenny was only in his early teens if that. Drummer Charley was incredible. Tom R (bongos)

Aye, this is way better than anything they were doing in the 90's to present.

Also, we recorded this only after 2 months together (part time). Personally, as one of the musicians, I can't stand the album cover, but I was not consulted LOL. As we continued to rehearse full time in the months that followe we actually became a great sounding band. We performed FREE for the local citizens of every port we visited, in town squares, theatres, parades, TV and radio. At that point, I would compare us to the group Chicago (we also had the horn section). BUT you see, YOU never got to hear us when we evolved into who and what we became. I had a cassette tape of one of our rehearsals which would have proven my point and I would have posted here on you tube had I not -most regretfully- lost it. TR (percussion)

@@thomasrodre3264 Hey I don’t need any convincing, the album sounds great! I still have Power of Source on my regular rotation, if got me through hard times and great times. I’ve heard lore about y’all and also of a music Bridge so I fully believe y’all got yourselves to ideal condition, not that you need it. Anyways if I ever met any of y’all, whether in “the scene” through mutual friends or randomly, I’d be genuinely star struck, so just know you have a young (20’s) fan out there.

great music, shame it was made to recruit people to a cult, but amazing talent nonetheless.

According to tenor saxophonust Neil Sarfati, Hubbard bungled the production. But you can hear how FIRE the band could get on this one. I think they only recorded on a few tracks, the musicians could not hear themselves via monitors and there were minimal takes - essentially recorded live to tape while they were at port. This was when Hubbard was dodging the IRS and took to the sea on the Scientology ship. NUTSO story! But the band, by all accounts, were tight AF and was killer live. Unfortunatly the record is a dodgy but given the circumstances under which it was recorded it's pretty extrordinary!
