Dudamel is having WAY too much fun with this one. And quite frankly it is way beyond epic. You don't just listen to a piece conducted by Dudamel - you watch him. Astounding.
This is SO GREAT!!!!!!! Bravo Dudamel, bravo Herbie, bravo LA Phil, brava the clarinet soloist, the brass players, every everyone! They have recomposed and recreated this great piece of American genius!!!!! Thank you all!!!
Herbie can do anything he sets his hand to, and it will be good, because he is a consummate musician. Perhaps my favorite pianist of all time, for his versatility and creativity.
I just LOVE this piece w Dudamel & Hancock. I have always enjoyed Rhapsody in Blue, but I especially like that Dudamel & Hancock are having such fun performing it! ❤
-- I feel it appropriate to mention: Gustavo Dudamel is music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. . As well . . . this performance utilized an excellent pairing with Herbie Hancock. And the performance is well documented. Thank you.
Wow! What a version of this classic and jazz standard. Loved the play between HH and Dudamel, who was clearly loving every minute of Herbie's performance and Herbie, man, swinging, honky tonk, backbeat, improvising... And that clarinet solo :-D
13:38 who remembers that episode of Tom and Jerry where Jerry dances with the center pieces on the table tops?? So much of my love for classical music started with Tom and Jerry and Bugs Bunny. Magical stuff.
Kudos to Mr. Dudamel and Mr. Hancock for their collaboration on this one. I slight wish, and that is I feel that Mr. Hancock's performance would have been even greater if he had not needed the music. I've always thought of Rhapsody In Blue as a "let it rip" kind of live performance. However, Mr. Hancock's jazzy interpretations were absolutely on the money. So many pianists try to convey this and fall short for so many reasons but...Mr. Hancock had it in his bones! Mr. Dudamel kept the orchestra going with the needed stomp! The soloists with their cameos were exquisite. Again, great performance!!
Herbie probably felt he needed the score just in case ... although much of time he wasn't looking at the score ... jazz players are used to a freedom that doesn't involve reproducing something note for note ... I imagine he was happy and relieved when this was over ... lol
@@lincolnrossmusic Mr. Ross, sorry to respond with this, but, that is exactly my point. Soloists reading during a live performance pushes the audience to want to help them. They present themselves as being in need and not being in control. Thanks for your cooment.
This is a really tough tune to find the balance between keeping the jazzy feel and maintaining the solid classical technique at the same time. Classical players tend to sound too stiff and jazz guys tend to struggle with the difficult passages. Overall, for someone like Herbie who is not used to playing in this style with an orchestra, he does a good job of a hanging in there. I don't think any other jazz pianists could play this as well as him. He know he's in over his head-this is more of a tribute to Gershwin.
In my opinion Herbie Hancock is the only musician who can seat next to Leonard Bernstein in the history of music: both wonderful in Classical and Jazz music! Maybe Herbie a little bit more popstar...
The slow passages (around 8:00 for example) are interesting. But Herbie is struggling elsewhere. He’s one of the three greatest jazz pianists of all time but he’s in over his head here. Simply compare to Yuja. She’s in full command of the piece, like Gould was to Bach. This is anemic piano playing.
I’ve heard many different performances of this piece, and I fail to hear anemic playing by Herbie. There are some that I like better than others, but Herbies playing is totally competent.😊
Hancock clearly isn't up to this piece, he has not learned it (uses the score and still doesn't play all the notes), he hasn't got the technique, his touch is too heavy and the tempo is too slow. For an easy comparison, please look up Khatia Buniatishvili's version, a different piano playing altogether.
I disagree, and I'm not sure if you saw the same performance as I did. Herbie Hancock is one of the greatest pianists in the world, and he did this version of Rhapsody in Blue beautifully. He had fun doing this, and I'm sad that you couldn't see that.
Good job jerry, what a wonderful contribution you have made to this video. Now go and try to remember to change your diaper the next time you soil yourself. Yich.
One of the most iconic collaborations in recent music history, Herbie and Dudamel’s Rhapsody in Blue. Absolute magic.
I watched this performance several times. First time commenting on this collaboration between Dudamel and Herbie. I just love this rendition.
Both dudamel and hancock are superb in this performance!!
There should be more comments. This is an incredible performance. I love this piece and love how fresh this interpretation is.
Just what i was thinking. This is so fresh, but still has the classic touch.
This great composition is 100 years old this year, and I have to say this is one of the best performances I've seen in a long time. Bravo!
Guao!!! Bravo!!!

I’m more impressed with Herbie
This is SO GREAT!!!!!!! Bravo Dudamel, bravo Herbie, bravo LA Phil, brava the clarinet soloist, the brass players, every everyone! They have recomposed and recreated this great piece of American genius!!!!! Thank you all!!!
The back and forth between Dudamel and Hancock is a joy to watch. Especially as Hancock teases out the notes.
I love this performance so much!
12:00-12:20 is so unique. Only jazz players got this swing
Herbie can do anything he sets his hand to, and it will be good, because he is a consummate musician. Perhaps my favorite pianist of all time, for his versatility and creativity.
One of those great and special moments, that only music can create ❤
Excelente, impecable.
I just LOVE this piece w Dudamel & Hancock. I have always enjoyed Rhapsody in Blue, but I especially like that Dudamel & Hancock are having such fun performing it! ❤
Fenomeno !!!!!❤
Dudamel: great musician; Hancock : living legend.
EXCELENTE!!!

This is probably my favorite performance of the piece! The clarinet, the muted horns, and the breathtaking pianist. Wish I could have been there.
BRAVO!!! I always enjoy hearing the ROAR and SCREAMS of delight from the audience after each one of Dudamel's Masterful Concerts.

My God !!!!
absolutely incredible
This should be the city anthem of NYC.
It is at the beginning of Woody Allen's masterpiece, MANHATTAN.
Zubin Mehta conducting the New York Philarmonic and Gary Graffman is on piano.
Wow😮 Bravo!!! 👏👏👏
A unique performance, bravo 👏 👏 👏
Multitalented Herbie Hancock!!
A beautiful Masterclass of musicians at their best, much appreciated, thank you for sharing. cheers CB Australia
Still 58 years after first hearing a version of this song; it still gives me chills.

Obrigado Pai , eu ouvia isso no berço , Gershwin
Herbie’s the 🐐
BRAVISSIMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
impressive version of one of the iconic works of the 20th century.
Espetacular
BRAVO!!!!!!!!
I do not think Gershwin would disagree with this interpretation of the great Herbie Hancock

As I was watching this, it occurred to me that Dudamel looks like a kid in a candy store. It makes me feel a little giddy just watching him.
How many classical pieces have a banjo in the orchestra? ... also, Viva Gustavo! Magnificent, maestro!
YES! 👏👏👏
That 1st chair violin had to shake herbie’s hand after that masterful performance

I don’t know if I would say Herbie is in over his head. He nailed it as far as I could tell.😊

A little slow at the beginning. This si one of our preferred Masterpieces. Viva Venezuela!

Haha the way she started the piece just tells how fed up she is with her part
El piano apenas se escucha
Prefer Oscar Levant's piano for Rhapsody, but I appreciate HH's interpretation combined with Dudamel's playfulness.
