RIP LYLE MAYS... you were an American original just like Pat....words cannot express how I felt when it really hit me that I'd never hear Lyle play live again. But I take comfort in the amazing body of recordings left for us to cherish for the rest of OUR lives. Rest in peace, hope you're flying high -- like you always did here on Earth! 💙

+chip reid I agree 150%! Any group Pat is in is amazing, but yes, this assembly of musicians is absolutely breathtaking! I have been privileged enough to see him twice, and he sounds as good live and in person as he does on his recordings. That can't be said for all musical acts.

Back in 1977 when I was 16, I experienced this original lineup and tour in East Lansing, Michigan in the tiny Erickson Kiva setting. They opened with this song and my mind was musically blown forever. I can't express the emotions and movement and colors that I see and feel when this song plays but I know that they exist. This is one of the most powerful pieces of music ever conceived and executed in my opinion. I hadn't listened to this in over 30 years and something poked my conscience about it tonight. I was instantly transported back to that night 43 years ago and I felt the same feelings again... that's the power of this music.

@@renlessardHuge. I saw Dave Brubeck and his band, with his son on drums, small kit. Maybe 65 years old at the original taste of Chicago, on the lake front in old Navy Pier. Top 5 show of my life. When the drum solo kicked off, the lake front fire works went off. Like it was planned. Spoke to Dave 20 years later at a gig. 80 plus at this time. Said he will never forget that show himself.
P.s. opening for him, Henny Youngman!

PMG’s songs are always transcendent and timeless. I’ve been listening to Metheny since I heard the white album back in 1977.
His music has not just accompanied my life but has been such a part of my life that it can reasonably said has been my life in a profound way. His music has been with me white water rafting the rio bio bio in Patagonia back when it was mostly class IV and V , it has been with me skiing untracked powder in the Rocky Mtns, it has been with me rock climbing, trekking the Himalayas and sky diving It always evoked the spaciousness , joy and the transcendent found in nature as well as beauty too deep for tears . God bless Pat Metheny. A lot of us would not have made it without him.

That Gibson hollow body and Pat Metheny made one hell of a great career together, not to forget the help of the toothbrush by any means. That is the toothbrush guitar in the bridge, sort of slantwise?
How come Lyle Mays fits so well with Metheny? I think it's fantastic. A match made in heaven of sorts. You can tell that they think a lot alike when it comes to music. I bet they fight endlessly off stage.
I'm just kidding, of course. It's my bands that fight endlessly, but they're not my bands so I just walk off. Or laugh at them. It's hard to imagine any vibes but ecstatic ones from any of these guys. That's what brought me to Metheny. Some guy came over with some records at college and we listened for awhile and said "wow, listen to that. That guy must be ethically pure to exude such vibes. " Then he looked at us and kind of looked embarrassed and said there's no way to make that assessment. Maybe, but it was already out there and I knew what he meant and agreed. There's a purity about Metheny and Mays. Their music usually cleanses and provides a safe, interesting, friendly, trustworthy, and powerful friend who will drive anywhere with you and never complain. My car only had a CD player. So I listened to Secret Story for 3 years straight. I kid you not. There was a song I began skipping through a part of, but for 76 minutes of glory, only a part of one song to fast forward through? That is a CD worth every penny, as are all his CDs and records. No tolerance for silence is an album that I set on the very top, alone. I wasn't worthy of it. Can anyone relate to that behavior.

Construindo melodias e harmonias, fazendo música de verdade... Só um gênio como o PAT toca o que o coração e a alma gostam de sentir. Bom dia!

Five years earlier he played in Plateau Hall (great concert., but tickets sold out so quickly that in 1989 it had to be moved outdoors. Montrealers love him and he loves them back.
