How about two? Western Mountaineering down pants, and (currently) REI down booties, which will be replaced soon as the down is beginning to leak out at the sole seam. I think I'll try synthetic next time to deal with moisture better.

I've gone snow camping a couple of times, I think investing in the higher r-value sleeping pad is where it's at! On a recent trip, I used my normal 3-season pad with a foam pad underneath and I was... fine. A very memorable moment on one trip was a night hike under a full moon through snow covered evergreen trees... the stillness and the views?? Amazing. It can be totally worth it to hike in the winter - totally transforms a hike and the scenery. Cheers!

For snow camping, a hammock is a great way to go if you know you can hang. There's nothing cozier than being wrapped 360 degrees in lofty down insulation. Also, if you take a tarp with doors and pitch it low, you can pack the snow up around the edges to keep out the breeze, and it stays quite a bit warmer inside the tarp (not warm, but warmer).

Always great to see another take on winter backpacking. I am in Wyoming so I tend to be a bit more old school with more bomb resistant shelter, a one season UL BD First Light tent. And I breakout my liquid fuel stove for water making and more reliable operation, in my experience, in sub 30 deg F environment. Really like layers choices you made. IF I get a post pandemic trip back to AZ CA NV in winter, like New Years as I have years past, even closer to your choices.

Nice video and interesting gear info! I've never tried snowshoeing, but I've done cross country skiing overnight trips. Two points: I've often had "problems" with a Thermarest on snow. It's really easy to get condensation on the underside and then it get damp when you roll it up and it gets worse after each night. I prefer to add a thin foam pad in stead of a thicker inflatable pad for winter use. Second point: It's really easy to get bad burns if you leave a gap between the tights/pants and the socks when it fresh snow and sunny.

When I was young and foolish, I would do deep snow camping in upstate NY. The days were extremely short, temperatures were very low, and nights were long. So, it was always early to bed for a very long winter's nap. Then I'd awaken at 11 PM and need to pee. After experiencing peeing in the middle of the night with temps of -20, and snow up to my buttocks I quickly learned to carry a pee bottle. After my first trip with a pee bottle, I learned to carry a much larger pee bottle. Essential winter camping equipment!

I'm using my Altra Lone Peaks for winter hiking as well. Two pairs of wools socks and my feet stay plenty comfortable for hours on end in those shoes. Only run into problems when the temps get close to freezing and snow thawing becomes an issue. I should invest in some waterproof socks for those occasions.

As far as socks, you could also go with a pair of over the calf wool socks...depending on the temps it could be too much but I have found they work wonders...especially if you like less on the rest of the leg like the tights or just a simple standard layer of pants, etc. They will keep you quite warm while active.

As an Arctic Hiker, I was a bit sceptical at first, but I found myself saying "Yeah, that'll work" a lot of the times. Not the biggest fan of the MSR Snowshoes, but that's just a personal choice xD
For your climate, and only being out a few days, the gear works fine.
I wouldn't use most of it for work (Actic Nature Guide on Svalbard) (unless I'm hiking in late spring, when it's gettin warmer), but then at my temperatures, different gear is needed - that is usually 100% overkill for most people xD
Stay safe out there Darwin, and say hi to my old Homestate AZ for me.
Just would recommend some sun glasses, I don't know how high the risk of snow blindness is, where you're hiking, but better be safe than sorry.

I've always like anoraks and the like. My buddy uses the same waterproof socks he likes them too. Key to gortex is just change your socks frequently if your going to wear gortex to its full potential. But wear what makes you comfortable! I personally couldnt get away with just wearing tights in the Adirondacks. Maybe if i was on the move constantly but sitting still. Gotta have some warmth and just delayer if i have too. Always good stuff Darwin!! Stay safe! Hike on!!

Hey Darwin, can you do a video about how to set up a tent in the snow? I've camped plenty but it's always been on hard ground.
Wouldn't my body heat melt through the snow, and create a basin where the water would creep in to?

Can I just confirm that you're 20° quilt is not a fully insulated foot box but snaps? I'm finally able to get a high quality quilt. Have it nailed down to the UGQ or Enlightened Equipment. I do some winter camping on the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania. I have used "true" 20° sleeping bags no problem in January. Just wondering about footboxes of quilts in the same temp range.

Tip: If you ever melt snow for water, start off with small quantities and add snow little by little. It's a lot easier and faster for hot water to melt snow than that single flame can, e.g. large ice cub vs small ice cubes.

Im pretty sure that was a land speed record of me hitting the like button! Hey Darwin! It's me Guys!-too funny! I didnt realize AGC made a liner too. Have you ever compared it to any other liners like S2S? Im still dialing in my winter gear, and I was SO excited to hear you say you rock your trail runners. I feel seen. :) I might have to check out those randy sun socks. Do they affect how your socks fit, or are they on the thin side like a liner? Thanks for all the great vibes and even greater info! -Dandelion

Darwin, I have been mulling over the UGQ 20 so this vid was great. Do you have the fully foot box? Overstuff with collar? I can't decide on those features and if they are worth it. It's killing me! If you have a sec, would love to know your thoughts. Peace.

What happened with the custom Thru with the OE fabric strip and patch that I sewed up for you back in September?

Hey Darwin, it's gals! Lol, curious about the toughness factor on the Alta Olympus shoe. I tried a pair on a couple days ago and they are very cushy, I love the toe box. Wondering how well they hold up and how they fair on rough terrain with rock and tree roots (Colorado), mud, snow, rain. At $170 want to make sure before buying.

What is the coldest temperature you encountered while hiking or in camp?
