Nightwish is a symphonic metal band from Kitee, Finland. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen.
Floor Jansen is a Dutch singer, songwriter, and vocal coach. She is currently the lead vocalist of Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. Jansen first became known as a member of symphonic metal band After Forever, standing as their lead vocalist from 1997, when she joined at age 16, to their disbanding in 2009

It never ceases to amaze me how Floor can bend forward, rotate her head like a madwoman, and then stand up and launch into a power song as if nothing had preceded it.

The opening number of ths concert was "A Shudder Before the Beautifull". This was the second number.

Thank you for doing Nightwish! Floor has referred to herself as a "vocal nerd," so I think she just likes collecting colors for her voice. Everyone needs a hobby. ;-)

If you want to hear more of Marko (bassist/vocals), I would recommend "The Islander" live from Tampere.
I would recommend their cover of "High Hopes" by Pink Floyd for more Marko.
I would also suggest While Your Lips Are Still Red for more Marko.

This is their second song from that concert.. Their first song there was "Shudder before the beautiful" that you should check.. Because that's how they open a concert :D

Floor is doing 100% of the growling^^ "High Hopes" (Pink Floyd-Cover, live @ Hartnell Arena) and "The Islander" live @ Tampere are great Marko-songs btw :) Further fantastic Nightwish-songs in general are "Storytime" live @ Wacken and "Weak Fantasy" live @ Tampere. EDIT: "7 Days to the Wolves" live @ Wembley is another must-see!
I would actually go with the SVT live at Bravalla for Weak Fantasy over Tampere, the mix highlights some awesome parts of the song that you miss in some interesting ways.

"Holy Shostakovitch Batman!" Floor growls and seduces like a siren in the same song! :D Marko shines in Nightwish's cover of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" and Nightwish's own folky "The Islander".
Beautiful and Terrifying is basically the summary of who and what Floor is. In every way. She is a force of nature when on stage, and with Nightwish they transcend the incredible and become something unique, those who have listened and truly heard it are blessed.
Tuomas (Key) is composer,sing song writer and a poet, and Genius (Metal Mozart) in the band. 95% he who writes the music and songs!.. Stay safe.

About the music of Nightwish: This song is, as 95% of their songs, the work of Tuomas Holopainen, founder, band leader and keyboarder of the band. He is responsible for composition, arrangements, lyrics, etc. After every album there is world tour and then Tuomas takes a break before inspiration comes to him. The few songs that were not from him are usually from Marco Hietala, the long haired bass player with the double beard and second vocalist (he often does back vocals, but they also have duets and a few songs that Marco sings alone), like for example 'The Islander' where he is also lead vocalist. He also had his own band before Nightwish was even founded and now a side career as a solo artist with 2 of his friends (side projects are a normal thing, all the other band member have them except for the little guitarist who is happiest chilling with his family and some beer).
About this song: This is Tuomas' little love letter to the most extreme members of the creationist family, the extremistic religious kind. He kicks out such songs occationally, and they are kinda in a similar tone as what Richard Dawkins wrote about them. Not surprising, Tuomas dedicated a whole album to his work. He wanted to become a biologist, if the music didn't work out (as well as Floor wanted to become a biologist as a child). The whole band is pretty much leaning towards science, fantasy, environment, etc when it comes to interests and hobbies. Like many metal musicians and fans. And especially christians (the extremistic ones, that is) see all of that as satanic and evil, and tear them apart in their little 'bubble' world.
There are other songs that are also adressed towards creationists, which are all harder and harscher/faster than most of their songs: 'Weak Fantasy' from thei previous album 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful' (the one dedicated to Richard Dawkins' work) and from their recent album 'Human :II: Nature' the song 'Tribal' . Those 3 together paint a pretty clear picture what Tuomas thinks about overly religious people who don't leave people alone with their religion.

Floor's growling and the guitar work makes this one of the heaviest Nightwish songs, probably the heaviest that they actually play live. I would recommend the poet and the Pendulum live from the same show, there is a version with lyrics. It is one of their 3 "epics" along with Ghost Love Score and The Greatest Show on Earth. Tells a very deep story that I am SURE many will be able to explain much more clearly than myself.
Floor is such a great stage persona, it's amazing.

That riff is almost exactly the same as for "Dark Chest Of Wonders" with which they used to open their shows. And that growl comes from Floor.
This is song #2 of the set list of this concert. They come blasting straight on with Shudder Before The Beautiful, and then Floor’s first dialogue with the crowd comes prior to Yours Is An Empty Hope.
Floor has three real strengths that make her so formidable: she is a great all-around metal singer who switches between vocal registers, in and out of distortion and false cord growling in a snap; she can do operetta/musical quality operatic style, switching to conventional metal and back with the same snap, and finally she is a great Broadway quality performer. Yours is Empty Hope is a great illustration for the first. Shoemaker or solo Vilja LIed (at Beste Zangers) showcase her operatic side. Wild Card with her prior band ReVamp shows how those can all come together. And for pure performance, nothing beats Poet and the Pendulum from this Wembley concert. To be fair, there aren't many rhapsodies like that one out there to begin with.
Absolutely brilliant description of Floor's abilities as a vocalist!! I would add that she also uses body language to deliver the emotional aspect.
You should react to Sancta Terra by Epica and Floor Jansen. It's amazing.
This band has 3 very strong, talented, and well trained singers. Floor, Marco (bass player)h is known as the voice of Finland. I remember seeing him perform on VH1 back in the 80s. And Troy from the UK. As you move on you will be amazed at their flexibility and meshing of sounds. Enjoy the ride.

Coach great reaction, thank you. Yep....Grr the growl is her ! Range and power for Floor....Do yourself a favor and UA-cam search " Floor Beste Zangers ". It's a Dutch TV show from last year. Before she was on the show only a small amount of people in Holland knew who she was. Pop is king there and metal follows folk and rock as well. Things have changed....She sings opera, rock, pop, folk and metal songs. In German, Dutch, English and memorized a salsa song in Spanish putting a metal hue on it. You gonna love.

Loving your journey into Nightwish Ken. Mine started 2 years ago and I need a NW 'fix' now every day...yes, addicted like the rest of us on here. I wasn't particularly following Metal/Rock anymore, but Floor did it for me with a chance watch of Phantom on Beste Zangers. Like many who witnessed that, it was an easy step to discover NW. Amazing band with the Queen of Metal and a killer genre. I predict you will also be an expert in a few weeks!

Floor is the best singer in history, the most versatile, she sings excellent in all styles from lyrical, pop, Latin, rock. Whatever you imagine, Thuomas creates and she brings her masterpieces to life. no singer resembles floor. If he was born in the US it would be better than all of them unfortunately he was born in the Netherlands and marketing is not the same

I always enjoy your reactions. As a vocal coach, if you really want a chance to see Floors vocal abilities shine up close and personal, I recommend that you check out her performances on the show, "Beste Zangers" the format of the show is a reality TV show where a group of vocalists are gathered and each week one of them is "spotlighted" by the other singers performing either a cover of one of thier songs or a song that means alot to them. In the show's run Floor start with classical opera singing Villia Lied, in German... an in succeeding week's performs phantom of the opera, shallow, from a star is born, both as a solo and as a duet, a Spanish song in Spanish, and others. The show is a much more intimate setting, so it's easier to see her technique and stage presence, as well as vocal and linguistic range. The other singers in the group were all quite unfamiliar with Floor, as is discussed in the show's dialuge.

The guy who does the growling is called Floor Jansen. ;) The problem with Floor and Marco is that the blend so well that you don't know when one isn't in the mix and does growling instead. :)

I strongly recommend CREEK MARY’S BLOOD from Nightwish. This song features the guest appearance of Native American Artist John Two-Hawks in which he sings with Tarja, and plays a Native American Flute. I dont recall this being reviewed before, and I cant understand why. To me the trail of tears in american history is one of the saddest moments in America's history, and one of the most powerful stories. It is absolutely one of THE most unique songs I have ever heard done, and Nightwish did an amazing job with it in the End Of An ERA concert which was Tarja's final concert with Nightwish back in 2005. I can honestly say I have never heard the Native American type of sound incorporated into Metal, but of course its going to be with Nighwish, who does it, and does spectacularly well. Be ready, because this has a powerfully emotional feel and message. This is an EXTREMELY Powerful Balad.

If you want to hear Floors voice in the raw, Hows the Heart (planet rock acoustic) is a great example.
Otherwise all the live performances are second to none. Poet and the pendulum (Wembley), Greatest Show on Earth (Tampere), or Weak Fantasy (Bravalla) are some of my favorites.
Make sure you check the background to Poet and the Pendulum and Greatest Show on Earth before you watch. It’ll make the experience a little more heart felt since you’ll already know the meaning and emotion of each song. :)
If you like to hear Floor singing, i recommend. "Beste zangers 2019" (Best singers), it's a Dutch show with all singers Who are singing eachother' songs to one and other...
