My uncle would show me the Christopher Reeve movies repeatedly when I was a kid. He always used to repeat the story about when he saw it in theaters, and everyone erupted into applause when Superman flew across the screen, noting that previously, all anyone had seen was the cheesy moving background effect. “You will believe a man can fly” was all that appeared in the previews he’d seen, and for a moment, people did. That first time he flies in the first movie now gives me goosebumps every time I see it, and it takes me right back to my grandparents’ living room floor, listening to my uncle’s story for the umpteenth time and enjoying it just as much as the first as we watch Superman take flight for the first time, for the 30th time.
The thing that I find so interesting is seeing Chris reeve be so candid about his thoughts on marlon Brando. Most actors at least of a certain generation consider him almost god-like. His honest assessment though critical but not insulting was nice. Also the physical acting difference between Superman and Clark Kent is brilliant.
I know people are so divided on Man Of Steel, but one scene in particular that made me feel the same levels of pure joy and excitement as Superman the Movie was when he flies for the first time. Superman the Movie left you in awe. Man of Steel made you excited and full of adrenaline. Both scenes are different but left the same impression on me. Pretty amazing when something can give you the same feelings you experienced as when you were 5 years old
One of my favorite childhood movies. Almost 43 and remember the first time I saw this movie. Was sick staying home from school and my grandmother introduced me to superman batman and wonder woman comics. Later that evening she popped in the superman movie. Good times.
I’m utterly speechless. This movie is unbelievable. The way you explained everything perfectly and why it is absolutely incredible still to this day, just blew my mind. Ian, your retrospectives continue to blow me away everytime and you continue to prove why you’re the absolute best when it comes to retrospectives. Thank you for teaching me all these amazing facts on this movie, and now I want to see it so badly. Here’s hoping I do soon. Thank you, Ian, I love you, and I hope to see you again soon.😊❤️
YES! Superman For Everyone is back! I'm not a DC Comics expert, I would say I know more then a lot of people do in DC, but I'm so happy there's another Superman For Everyone.
I say "Go For It!". Love all your retrospectives. I know you have passion and love for Superman so would love to see you cover all the Superman franchise films with the exquisite detail and flair you bring. I changed my mind "Just Do It!"
I was nine when my Dad took my brothers and I to see it the day after Christmas in 1978. This may be hard to believe, but it shook me much more than Star Wars a year earlier. Nostalgia aside, as dated as this film can be, Reeve's performance, Williams's score, and Donner's reverence for the character make this the best. Raimi's Spider-Man comes very close, and that's saying a lot. It has a lot of good will and heart.
Dude this was awesome! Definitely need a retrospective of the other films my dude! Great work like always brotha! #ThanksForWhatYouDo #WeAreTheDanDans #MuchLove #SupermanForEveryone
I was 4 years old when my dad took me to the theater to see Superman: The Movie. I can still remember the opening scene with the curtains opening and the young boy reading the comic book. After all of these years this film remains one of my favorite films of all-time; it's a classic and will always be the template for a superhero movie.
I like how Christopher Reeves portrays the character in the sense that he chooses to save a cat out of a tree when everything is calm and under control, and not during a Kryptonian takeover on earth like people wanted to see in Man of Steel apparently. I think by this comment you know my opinion of the ridiculous backlash Man of Steel has faced for years but interesting to see you break it down in full hopefully because I think you'll find a balance between the positives and what people perceive as negatives. Looking forward to the serious hopefully continuing.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. I remember bugging my dad asking if he’d take me to see it. I was 8 years old. Dad took me twice. I love how it made me feel as a kid and when I got older, I appreciated it so much more. Christopher Reeve was the perfect actor for this role. I do think it’s possible for a new Superman movie to come out with the actor matching(or close)the charisma of Reeve but will never beat Reeve in that department, IMO. In these movies, I appreciate Superman’s pure love for humanity.
Henry Cavil is a good Superman, but Christopher Reeves will always has been and always will be the one true Superman. He brought the iconic superhero come to life. From his character to his mannerisms and even the costume itself looks even more amazing in real life. Looking at this super retrospective, just makes me want to re watch the classic Superman movies now. Thanks for showing this history of this iconic movie.
Definitely do the retrospective for Superman 2 this is actually my first time really knowledging the very first Superman movie from 1978!! Awesome video bro keep doing more
Love your retrospectives. Whenever your done with the Superman videos I’d love to see another series with a different superhero like Batman or Spider-Man
Do I want to see more retrospectives on Superman movies? Damn right!!!! I was hoping you'd touch on Reeve's displeasure with Brando because I myself learned about it only a year ago. Superman is indeed for everyone!
Love it! Love the Superman Of Everyone series! And, as much as I would love to see you cover Superman 2, 3 and 4. I think you should cover Superman Returns next! Thanks for the content!
I remember when I was a kid that this movie would come on TV every so often and I loved watching it. I would like to hear what you would have to say about the other Superman movies. Hell I would like to hear what you have to say about the cartoons and even the TV shows. Keep up the work and I hope you have a great holiday season.
Hey brother of course we want to see more Superman are you kidding of course yes we want to see more Superman I mean come on you're talking about one of the greatest icons of this century😍🤞👃😄😅😀👀
Yo, I never knew you made this!! Would definitely love to see more Superman retrospectives. Maybe some Batman ones too? Your videos rule man. Love this channel!
You do amazing work with these reviews and I can enjoy it easily...I'm not a fan of superman but you keep it interesting and yes I would love to see the rest of these movies being reviewed by you and now I wanna watch this movie thank you for the amazing job and keep it up boss man
Superman the Movie changed EVERYTHING. Hollywood was never the same afterwards. A lot of people think JAWS or Star Wars was what did it but Superman the Movie was so much more important. It was part Sci-fi, part romance, part old school Americana. It was like catching lightning in a bottle. EVERYONE was seeing this movie and EVERYONE wanted more. THAT John Williams soundtrack! THAT Christopher Reeve performance! Sure, its a bit hokey in places but it was also the most positive and upbeat movie to come out of the dark, depressing 1970's. Afterwards, Hollywood restructured itself to make escapist entertainment which is why so many 80's movies were so damn great! You think Indiana Jones, Batman or Back to the Future would have happened without Superman? Not a chance! Superman proved that big budget, special effects crowd pleasers were the future. If you want the full effect, go back and watch some 70's movies like The Godfather and Taxi Driver before you watch S:TM. It's almost like watching the sun come up after a dark and stormy night...
Oh, Ian, this was so wonderful! Yeah, I'm a kid in a candy store right now. This was tons of fun. I love that your girlfriend enjoyed seeing it on the big screen with you, even if she's not a big fan of the character. The movie is so wholesome and so well done, I think it's easy to fall in love with. And, yeah, I'm pretty sure you just proved that you too can fly.
I never go really do research into films and stuff so I didn't know superman 1 and 2 were written and partially filmed concurrently, but it totally makes sense as to why Superman 2 is so good and just as strong as 1 (albeit in different ways).
Great video man, love to see Superman For Everyone back. I remember commenting in a previous video about waiting to see Henry Cavill return of Superman, now look at the state of things 🤪 MoS retrospective maybe?
I remember I watch very first Superman movie on TV back then. I had five Superman movies DVD set for Christmas on 2017 or 2018 I don’t remember it I did I watched all them. So fast forward to 2021 or 2022 I buy Man of Steel at store. Now I got about six Superman movies on DVD myself! Other than awesome video man 😎keep going talk about Superman movies what not.
Although Man of Steel is my all time favorite Superman that actually made me care about the character for the first time since ever as it was literally the beginning of his journey into becoming the Superman we know, I do love Superman The Movie with Christopher Reeve. It's the first Superman movie I ever saw on DVD and I havent seen it since I was a kid. I do need to do another rewatch of this movie, especially watching the 3 hour TV movie cut which I had no idea there was one until two years ago. To answer your question, Ian. Yes! Id love for you to do a retrospect on the other Superman movies because I do love your Superman For Everyone series learning a bit from you
I think the first time I saw the 80s Superman movie was in 2008 I rented three Superman DVDS 📀 and Superman Returns 2006. I have always been more of a Batman guy myself.
I'd love to see a review of Superman 3 because it's the one out of the first three that's still nostalgic but I don't really remember it. I watched the first three with my dad one day when I was a kid.
Would be exciting to see Superman related shows like Smallville and Lois and Clark discussed on this channel, great video though, not entirely sure the whole not having a main boss fight in superhero movies aged well I could be wrong but would just have to work well with the story and satisfy most viewers.
Great video my good man. I would have loved to have seen this movie with the mind set of somebody from the 70’s and be blown away. Look forward to a full retrospective of the whole series, even the shitshow that is Superman IV. Maybe even what was supposed to be Superman V.
Another amazing retrospective my guy. Thank you for really pointing out how unlike other super hero movies this is, in a very good way is it unlike them. Also, curious as a fellow Illinoisan and as big of a Superman fan as you are, have you been down to Metropolis, IL? I've only been once and I'm a lot closer than you are. lol
Excellent retrospective! This is one of those films that I need to watch at least 5 times a year. Between Richard Donner, John Williams, and Christopher Reeve, they all helped make a magical film. While I would love to see retrospectives on the other three movies, Superman Returns, and Man of Steel, I would like to know your thoughts on the current CW Superman and Lois series, if you watched it.
Personally, I’d love to hear a retrospective of the 1989 Batman film: the first in a decades-long franchise that picked up where the first Superman left off.
I am disappointed that I waited a year to watch this because I had wrongly assumed you would trash my favorite movie. Your review was fair and aligned in some ways with my own criticisms and appreciation of Man of Steel. I should have trusted you Ian, a mistake I won't make again.
@616Entertainment nope, I missed the title completely. In another video you made an off handed remark more than likely about Cavill's overall portrayal of Superman over all the Snyder movies and I instantly became close minded. Apparently enough to blind me from reading something in front of my face for the last year...
@616Entertainment I realize now that I had written my initial comment while watching your Man of Steel video and after it ended your Superman: The movie video came on.I must have posted my inital comment on this video by mistake. To be honest I am just happy I wasn't as blind as I had thought. Both solid videos by the way.
Marlon Brando’s cue cards wasn’t just on Superman. That was just Brando. He refueled to memorize his lines and used cue cards on all of his later movies including his best performances in the Godfather and Apocalypse Now. Coppola let him improvise most of his lines in Apocalypse Now. He was extremely difficult to work with, but artistic genius is usually eccentric.
The hype is real. Now that we got this we definitely have to get a Superman 2 which to many many people and many internet outlets as the greatest superhero movie ever made. I don't share that opinion but it is the best Superman movie ever movie hands down. I am actually a bit curious on your opinion on the "actual" first appearance of Superman on screen with Superman and the mole men from 1958 which lead to that TV show way back when.
Ian, you should do retrospectives for Superman 2, 3, 4, Returns, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman & Justice League. & if you feel like doing it, you can even do retrospectives for Supergirl (1984) & the unmade Superman Lives/Superman Reborn movie with Nicholas Cage.
I have been saying since the end of the dark knight rises that the DC films will be sub par until we get superman movie that is about nothing but hope.
Really enjoyed your video. Agree with everything you said about what makes Superman a great character, and it led me to ask, did you ever watch the 1988-1992 live-action Superboy TV series? The Salkinds produced it, same team that made Reeve fly worked on it. It lasted 4 seasons, the suit is almost identical. Unfortunately the first season kinda sucks. There are good episodes there but a lot of bad ones. Season 2 improves with the introduction of Bizarro and Metallo. Season 3 and 4 are amazing. It was the first DC live-action..well anything, to have a multiverse, They visit 4 alternate earths, one of which is very Red Son. Which is kinda awesome considering it came out in 1991, almost a decade before Red Son was written. It's a shame most people aren't aware it even exists. If you can get past the cheese that comes with late 80s early 90s tv, you'll enjoy it. It got better and better each season, and was doing well in the ratings. But then Warner Bros decided they wanted to do Lois and Clark instead, and Superboy ended, and was forgotten. Like i said, it's a shame. Because despite some bad stuff, it kept going and striving for better and better stories and production values. Whereas i feel seasons 3 and 4 of Lois and Clark were just a decline. That got canceled because it got bad. Superboy was canceled after 4 seasons while it was in its prime.
I love Christopher Reeve as Superman and when ever i was having a bad day as a kid or even now i watch these movies. True DC don't make super heroes hmovies like they use to. With me Christopher is my last great live action Superman i have checked out the others after him and i just can connect with it. It does not give me the same vibe if that makes sense.
You forgot Tom Mankiewicz (wrote 3 Bond films) who Donnor brought in to rewrite the story by Mario Puzo then Script by David and Leslie Newman. Donnor couldn't get him a writing credit so he was given a Creative Consultant title. When Donnor was fired after Superman 1 came out and replace with Richard Lester. Tom Left with respect for Donnor.
I've heard that Superman didn't travel back in time by reversing Earth's rotation. What happened is that Supes flew fast enough to send himself back in time. Which is something The Flash has pulled countless times. Superman's Earth-spinning shenanigans are a long-held misconception but understandable since it's not apparent what he was doing. Sorry to say, I don't have a source I can quote, I just recall hearing it a while ago, but I can't friggin' remember. It was probably a WhatCulture Video.
@@616Entertainment A good point, but I think it's a sign of Superman going back in time. Though I suppose that also opens up the possibility of a paradox, with two Supermen present as a result.
@@dylanogg347 I think it's pretty clear what happened, that's why it's been the accepted piece of lore since 1978. Any sort of possibility can be pointed at as a maybe, but it's always been pretty obvious what happened. They represent it visually.
As a kid I found Superman the movie kind of boring after Krypton and even then I only liked the brief opening with the 3 villains then the destruction of Krypton . I appreciate it a lot more now as an adult but I still find the 3rd act pretty weak. Superman 2 is my favorite (Lester's extended cut that includes Nom killing the boy and his horse) because it was the first time it really seemed like Superman was facing a legit threat even with his powers. The 3 Kryptonian villains were great. Only complaint would be the gags during the wind scene in Metropolis at what should have been a very dark moment. Would love to see you do a review of that movie. The others to for fun even though they were comically bad (one much worse than the other).
The death of Jonathan Kent is still one of the most heart-wrenching moments in comic film history. Gets me every time
An important lesson of clark that is blatantly skipped over in the Snyder films
"They can be a great people, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way."
“For this reason above all, their capacity for good. I have sent them you. My only son”
My uncle would show me the Christopher Reeve movies repeatedly when I was a kid. That first time he flies in the first movie now gives me goosebumps every time I see it, and it takes me right back to my grandparents’ living room floor, listening to my uncle’s story for the umpteenth time and enjoying it just as much as the first as we watch Superman take flight for the first time, for the 30th time.

Still the best Superman. His acting showed how people could be fooled thinking Clark and Superman were different people. He was that good.

This is the greatest Superman movie of all time without question.
Superman (1978) is my all time favourite movie as well

I love Superman (1978)
My favourite movie ever
I like how Christopher Reeves portrays the character in the sense that he chooses to save a cat out of a tree when everything is calm and under control, and not during a Kryptonian takeover on earth like people wanted to see in Man of Steel apparently. I could listen to you go into deep Dives everyday on these movies and video games. You do great work.
Wow! Such a great retrospective, very well done! Can't wait for 2,3, and 4.
It’s my favorite 😊

Stoked for this one. Thank you for everything you do
Love your retrospectives. Whenever your done with the Superman videos I’d love to see another series with a different superhero like Batman or Spider-Man
I LOVE this movie!! I remember renting it so many times when I was a kid from the local rental shop. Ian, great video as always. 🤙🤙
Do I want to see more retrospectives on Superman movies? Damn right!!!! I was hoping you'd touch on Reeve's displeasure with Brando because I myself learned about it only a year ago. Superman is indeed for everyone!

It's good you are talking about Superman, and I would like to see more.
Great film. I'm not a Superman guy, but it's brilliant, and Christopher Reeve was excellent as the main man
Superman (1978) is my all time favourite movie

Well done!! Thank you!!
Another great retrospective, Ian. I still love this film though, as mentioned, it's got a few silly parts. Please do more Superman retrospectives!
Perhaps a history of Superman and maybe history of Batman but probably not
Been waitin’ for this, bubba.

I recently picked up the score of the movie on vinyl at my local record shop.

Love your Supergirl poster in the background. Whatever you think of that show, Malissa Benoist was a perfect choice!
She was excellent. I loved Season 1 of Supergirl and they lost me after that, but hey, S1 will always be great. Hahaha
8:51 good lord brutal moment
Personally, I’d love to hear a retrospective of the 1989 Batman film: the first in a decades-long franchise that picked up where the first Superman left off.

In another video you made an off handed remark more than likely about Cavill's overall portrayal of Superman over all the Snyder movies and I instantly became close minded. Cavill was never the problem with those movies. It’s unfortunate he never really, truly had someone at the helm who understood Superman. =\
@616Entertainment I realize now that I had written my initial comment while watching your Man of Steel video and after it ended your Superman: The movie video came on.I must have posted my inital comment on this video by mistake.
This was your 889th video on UA-cam!
Speaking of 1978 the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley cup defeat the Boston Bruins
So you might cover this in another video what are your thoughts about the cellophane superman s thrown in superman 2 in the fortresses if solitude
I have been saying since the end of the dark knight rises that the DC films will be sub par until we get superman movie that is about nothing but hope.
Really enjoyed your video. Agree with everything you said about what makes Superman a great character, and it led me to ask,
did you ever watch the 1988-1992 live-action Superboy TV series?
One small nit: that "commercial jet" was in fact Air Force One.
This is pre crisis superman, he's a fuckin god. Just the way it is.
That unique exciting feel of the Superman movies ended when the new Henry Cavell versions came out. No more cool music and excitement.
Have you done a video comparing Superman II and the Donner Cut? I think you'd have a lot to say about that topic.
Didn’t forget. Carefully chose what to and not to present.
Have you seen the three hour version of this movie? It’s really great.
I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on the other 3 films
Technology was very limited in 1978
I've heard that Superman didn't travel back in time by reversing Earth's rotation.
You can literally see the planet change directions.
My favourite superman the only actor that came close to Reeve was Tom Welling in my opinion I really wanted to see him be superman.
Do the other Superman movies too
Sooo Superman beat an evil real-estate agent.
Bruh I'm down for a series review of the superman movies
