My 2 cents worth: I agree with your thoughts on the Kielo wrap dress. It just doesn't flatter you (and usually you look great in your clothes). If it were me, I'd salvage the lovely fabric to make something else (sleeveless swing dress, color block tunic). The Burda blouse, on the other hand, looks great!

Like many others I don’t think you will wear the dress if you have doubts now. I could see it as a summer jumpsuit maybe but my sewing knowledge is limited ! I too have this pattern and material ,bought in London last year but now I really have doubts now as I’m only 5ft 3 “ . Your shirt is great and looks perfect ! I also have embroidery Anglaise that’s been in my stash forever which is in danger of changing in colour 😂

The shirt is very smart and enhanced by the use of plain fabric for the collar, cuffs and bib. I'd be very proud if I had made that. The dress is lovely fabric but sadly does not flatter you. Surely there is enough fabric in it to make another garment.

    Beautiful blouse...just perfect!!!
The dress I would cut up. Make a sleeveless summer top so you don't loose the great binding. There is definitely enough fabric for a long sleeved top so that you could make an Adrianne.
Then use the sleeves already cut out for another top with a colour blocked body in an orange or match the leaf colour. Xxxxx😍😍😍😍😍

The blouse is stunning and stunning on you 😍. I don’t think the Kielo is hanging right on you. I think the Kielo looks perfectly fine but it doesn't matter because you're not comfortable in it and you will never wear it. If you have enough usable pieces of fabric maybe look at Simplicity 1102. I've made this before and it's lovely, got some interesting features and I think that fabric would look great in it. That shirt is amazing though! Can see that getting all the wear :)

Lovely to see you back. Sorry you have been under the weather. The white top is fabulous. Agree with you about the wrap dress. Its just not right on you. Could you make a tunic length top - so you keep the wrap round but it finishes just above the pointy bit on the drape? That might be quite interesting. Would you then have enough fabric left to make a skirt? Will be interested to see what you decide in the end.

Sorry you’re not feeling well. Hope it gets better soon. Loooove your eyelet shirt. Have been thinking of similar shirt. About the Kielo, I would make something else out of the fabric. But that’s because I was never a fan of that pattern and you confirmd it. More important, however, is that you are saying yourself you prefer the fabric to be something else. Go with your gut. I think the pieces are big enough, aren’t they? At least a long sleeve top I would expect. Good luck with whatever you decide with it. 💕

    Hi Alex,
Love your channel! Your blouse is stunning and will serve your wardrobe in many ways, I’m sure.
I can SO relate to makes that are disappointing (can’t we all?) but I’ve made two kielos for my daughter that turned out gorgeous. Matter of fact, whenever I get discouraged with failed makes, I resort to making her a Kielo! She looks amazing in them and loves wearing them. I’ve only used drippingly drapey fabric to make them and after seeing your dress, I think you’re right, the drape of the fabric is really the key. I was interested in one of the posts saying they turned the triangle points to pockets and removed the ties. I’ve also always loved the sleeveless version, so I can’t speak to making one with sleeves. The fabric is lovely on you, so I hope you can find something you’ll enjoy using it for, even if it means not using all of it. Good luck!

    • @AlexJudgeSews
      @AlexJudgeSews  4 роки тому

Thanks Kay 😀 yep definitely wrong fabric choice, is your daughter slim? I suspect that’s where I’ve gone wrong too 😁. It’s a great suggestion about the pockets isn’t it, I’m going to give it a quick try before dismantling the whole thing. ❤️👩🏻‍🦰

@@AlexJudgeSews question about my daughter....yes, she is slim. And, you may have noticed I did not say I’d made any for myself. I am not slim and I’m sure the dress wouldn’t work for me. Honestly, from what I’ve seen you make, model, wear, I would think in the drapier fabric, you would look good in a Kielo. If I were as slender as you are...I’d give it a go for myself.
Thanks for sharing makes that aren’t total successes as well as your ones that are. Impossible to be a sewist and not have some flops.

The Burda is great, looks wonderful on you. The Kielo not so much. Your instincts are correct. It doesn't do a thing for you. Might be a drapier fabric would improve it but as it is now it billows out at the hips. Make it into something you will wear because the fabric is lovely.

Hello Alex and thank you for yet another episode. I've watched them all and I love listening to you and see what you make. I agree about the Kielo wrap dress. :S And then, I hope I am not to forward, but I don't think you are a true autumn, I think you are a true spring. When you wear spring colours you look so much better than when you wear autumn colours and autumns does normally not have your skin colour, they get easily tanned. And also the hair colour is a typical true spring colour. I know it's not your own, but you look so good with it. I love looking at what you make and get so inspired because you make clothes I would wear as well hehe. All the best, Kirvil.

    Hi Alex,
I love the idea of the kielo, but was afraid the reality would not match up (yup, I’ve been there before and been burnt - hello Victory Patterns Hannah dress, I’m looking at you). I have seen too many people feel a bit “meh’ about their kielo makes. So I will probably continue NOT to make it. However, cudos for sticking that one together as a a4 jigsaw. These days I won’t even stick a t shirt pattern together. It’s all a0 print at the printers for me now.
Honestly, I think your kielo is ALMOST a good one on you. But you are right, the fabric is too structured. However I can see that a more drapey fabric would look pretty darn good on you. And I think the colour of the fabric is great on you. Someone in the comments suggested just recutting it as a straight t shirt dress and I think that will be the simplest remake. Well, it’s what I would do. That way you also get to keep and wear as much as possible of that lovely fabric.
    Love the shirt btw

      @AlexJudgeSews  4 роки тому

Oooh I’ve been tempted by the Hannah dress too 😁. Someone has given me a tip off for an inexpensive printing service so I’m going to try and use that more often, but am impatient! I can see the Kielo becoming a T shirt 🤷🏼‍♀️

Alex, gorgeous fabric on the Kielo dress. I would just chop it off and make a longesh top out of it. Either leave the ties (after minimizing them) or just remove them. Maybe you would have enough extra material to make a straight skirt to match?
I’ve been tempted by that pattern also, but don’t know if it would work on my short, somewhat stocky frame.
Our mistakes are our education. I guess that pattern really needs a very drapey fabric. Thanks for your channel. I just discovered it. Greetings from the US 🇺🇸😍

Absolutely stunning seamwork on your blouse! And flattering to you as well. I completely agree with you on all points regarding the dress pattern being mismatched to the fabric, etc. You have always had great instincts about what works or doesn’t and have great fashion sense. I’m with you on where or when would you wear it, if you were to unpick and try to perfect it. I say trust yourself on this one and don’t take a guilt trip because it came from your son’s birthday gift. Make a top and be done with it, or, maybe use the remaining length for a matching pull on street length skirt? Do it next spring when you can see it with fresh eyes? Or gift it to a charity shop where someone might remake it to their own liking? But don’t suffer through another day of it- life’s too short and there’s so much other good stuff to make that you WILL enjoy wearing! 💜 💜 💜

Sorry that you have not been well, hope that things are o.k. now. I haven't made the Kielo wrap dress because I thought that it wouldn't suit me being only 5ft 2in! You usually suit whatever you make but I think that you are right about this dress, and you are tall. Do you know that You Tube are no longer sending out email notifications when vlogs are posted. I spent hours trying to work out why I wasn't receiving notifications then I saw a posting from a You Tube employee (not You Tube!!) that they have decided not to send emails as very few subscribers take notice. I hope you are starting to feel better! The blouse is absolutely gorgeous however, as to the Keilo, I think the colour is great on you but if you don’t mind me saying, there just seems to be too much fabric at the lower end of the dress for your frame. if I were you, I would add the sleeves and shorten it to knee lengthish (cut just above the back split) then you could wear it with tights and boots in the winter👍 you could them make a tank or the Itch to Stitch Cartagena cami with the cut off bit ....😁

I’ve always found the Kielo pattern interesting, although in my wardrobe it would serve more as a swanning about the house on a lazy Sunday type of thing. I think it looks better on you than you do, but your opinion is the only one that counts!
So, what to do? You have the sleeves already, and your neckline is perfection, so I see a knee length, long-sleeved, trapeze shaped dress to wear with a lightweight solid-color scarf and leggings or skinnies in the fall, and on its own with flats in the early spring, when it’s still chilly, but you’re dying for some spring COLOR.

I also bought the Kielo when it was released recently. I was seduced by the lovely images on instagram but had my doubts on whether it would suit me so made it in some cheap scuba (material which I hate btw) and am definitely meh about the result. Like you I cannot envisage an occasion where I would wear it so it will be going in the bin. I am not making it into anything else as I don't like the fabric. I feel the same seeing it on you - if you can't see yourself wearing it then change it into something else. Better to have something that you will wear. I think the suggestion to add the sleeves and chop it at the split is a good one.

I've never been a fan of the Keilo dress silhouette. I've only seen a few that I think look ok/good. I vote you make a top and a skirt out of it! Maybe you'd have enough fabric from the sleeves to piece together a pair of undies (knickers)! I hope you feel better soon! You sound like you're still feeling under the weather. 💜

I agree, your blouse is stunning. I also agree the dress is not flattering on you, I think it is the fabric type. Salvage the beautiful fabric for something else, no idea what lol. I have the kelo pattern on it's way (sent it for printing) as an experiment. It's not my usual style but want to see how it works on my curvy body. I have some really drapy knit to try it out with so found your go at it very interesting.

Isn’t it funny how we all see things so differently? I’ve also been looking on Instagram as have just made my first Kielo and I think it looks best knee length and with sleeves as that, to me, seems to balance the proportions better. I’ve ended up making mine in a viscose jersey (short and with long sleeves) and really like the finished result. Although, I’m not 100% happy with the neckline finish as bias binding viscose jersey was hellish 😱. I absolutely love your shirt - it’s stunning!

Love the shirt and I think the white looks good on you. Beatifully made. I wondered about the thickness of the embroidery and the open spaces, so appreciate you sharing your experience. I really like true white for a crisp shirt, and cream for a soft blouse. I thought about trying the Kielo in a woven viscose, but could see the finished seams causing the same odd flaring shape at the leg. But you could salvage the fabric (and maybe even keep your beatifully bound edges with your ingenuity!) Feel better soon.

The shirt is fabulous. The dress, the fabric doesn’t hang as you want it too. I’m not sure on the pattern - it would look better shorter on you, knee length maybe. I immediately thought of wearing it, perhaphs tied over vibrant or black wide leg pants or maxi skirt with a statement necklace for a night out, when you are allowed out again. I think the fabric for your Kielo is probably a little too stiff and a viscose jersey would have draped better. I think sometimes when a first garment doesn't go how we imagined, it puts us off trying it again, but I think in this instance, you should try it again in a different fabric, as I'm sure with your amazing figure, it would look fabulous 💕😁😘

That shirt is just lovely and I think with a bright coloured top underneath it will look fab!
I have to agree with you on the dress, the fabric isn’t right...it needs to become something else - how about a long sleeved top to go under the shirt? Or an LB Pullover? Or some kind of little jacket/cardi type affair? Or a gilet-style something? (I have no idea how much usable fabric you have or how much fabric any of these suggestions might use!)😬. Love your shirt! That’s given me an idea for a black lace fabric I’ve been hoarding for years! It’s quite dressy and I like all more casual style so have been trying to think of something to make with it!
I’m inclined to agree with you about the dress. I think the general style is great but it needs to be in a more drapey fabric. Could you put the sleeves in and make a long sleeved top? Then maybe a sleeveless top or cami out of the bottom half? Or a pair of pj shorts?
Editing to add - cancel all that.....just looked at the thumbnail for the next video (I’m almost caught up!) and can see you wearing a long sleeved top ha!

I made the keilo wrap dress but didn’t like the ties around the waist which were too low and made me look like a sack of spuds tied in the middle! I took the ties off and turned the points at the sides inwards to form two “pockets” just catching them with a stitch to keep them in place. I also thought the dress was too long so i shortened it to just above the ankle. I made 2 versions , both sleeveless and have had lots of positive comments on them. By inverting the poky side bits, this has taken some of the bulk out of the sides and the drape on the hips gives me the suggestion of a waist. You may want to try this approach before abandoning it. The fabric you used is lovely. Hope this helps!

The blouse is beautiful and made beautifully. The fabric you chose for the Kielo is lovely. I think it looks fine and very similar to one’s I’ve looked out where it sits out on the hip. I too have wanted to make this dress but haven t bought the pattern😆Mainly because I have so many others I haven’t used yet! I wonder if the length is putting you off as at the weekend I was helping my goddaughter with a Suki dress from Make it Simple. She wasn’t impressed with it and I saidI feel like this when it’s the wrong length etc so she finished it and it looks lovely. However I had an experience with the Indigo dress where I’m just not sure I like it on me. I looked at so many images and reviews and I researched fabric carefully yet feel unsure I’ll wear it or feel like wearing it! I’m not sure what to do as not sure I can be bothered to take it apart. If you refashioned your dress you should have enough material in the skirt part for something nice? Firstly try it knee length by pinning up though. As to sticking patterns together just always use a copy shop. I even did with Make it Simple or only buy printed patterns. This is my first time watching your channel and I think the title intrigued me( regarding my own feelings on the Indigo as every one else raves about it) Thank you 😃

Blouse is great, envy your shirt making skills. As for the Kielo, your gut feeling is absolutely right. Definitely needs more drape and you won’t wear this, so don’t think it’s worth the effort of fixing. However, there’s masses of fabric there, I think making something else, asap, is the way to go. I say asap, because you know it will become a demon fabric if you leave in a cupboard somewhere 😉 Sorry you are not 100% at the moment, hope you fully recover soon, so ghastly when one gets dragged down by whatever (life?? bugs? ). I’ve just made the kielo wrap dress, I’m a beginnermy second dress ever. I bought the paper pattern which with the jumpsuit pattern overlaid on it was quite tricky to cut out. I made it from a floral viscose jersey ( 5.99 pm from Minerva) I am really pleased with it. I am 5 ft 10 and it reaches the floor. My ties seem longer than yours. Yours does seem to hang a bit bulky below the hips, maybe it is to big on the hips or maybe the fabric doesn’t drape enough. Can you switch it to the jumpsuit ? I made with the sleeves and love them, good for winter and Summer evenings. Your white blouse is a total triumph xx sew again when you are feeling more rested xxxx

Hope you’re feeling better soon, I think so many of us are suffering ‘Corona Fatigue’. Back in March I know I thought ok, we have to do this and then everything will go back to normal but it hasn’t and I just feel a bit scundered as we say in Northern Ireland. I’ve seen loads of Kielo dresses but I’ve never been convinced by it, for me the neck is too high and I think you have to get the height of the side straps just right or it doesn’t flatter, and I’m guessing it needs a viscose jersey to drape nicely and also needs to be really wide too.... just my opinion! Anyway your blouse is a triumph, have you tried wearing white with a burnt orange top and navy trousers or over a brown top and trousers? I think both would work with your colouring, failing that dye it off white/ pale cream! Glad you’re back as I missed you x

The dress might make a lovely top and shorts set. Bit late for this summer, but lovely for next year?

I made the Kielo dress and the same I didnt like it, it did nothing for me, my fabric was a jersey but very fine and had lots and lots of drape, so I cut off the ties and shortened it and wore it as a balloon dress with the points of the side seam tucked inward. still not something I reach for very often but it will get a few wears in the summer months with flip flops.

Oh yes I can see that, a throw it on mooching around the garden/by the poll number. Not that I have a pool 😀❤️

Your shirt was masterfully executed. It's lovely! As for your kielo, could you selvage the bodice and turn the bottom into a gathered skirt (there may not be enough fabric) ala Moneta? Alternatively is there enough fabric to make a long sleeved t-shirt?

Thank you 😊. I’ve still got the sleeves so think a long sleeved T is the way ahead 😀

I would wear your lacy top with a bright Ogden cami underneath

That shirt is beautiful and i love the different ways that you have styled it. As for the kielo, i agree with you, I don’t think the drape is enough to make it flattering. Can you turn the bottom bit into trousers and the top half into a cami top?

Thank you, I think I’ll start with a too and see what’s left 👍🏻😀
