How about relaxed, edgy, modern? The overall looks have a relaxed vibe, the docs give edge and you are looking modern. Btw, something that stood out for me was you saying you prefer to be under dressed rather than overdressed. I don’t know your circle of friends or even your city but a lot of the inspiration looks may make you overdressed (or at least more dressed up) - layers of jewellery. Scarves, blazers ect). Since Covid and moving to a more casual city (from Melbourne to Adelaide in Australia) and retiring I feel self conscious dressing up. I even feel silly wearing makeup 😢. I find myself wearing jeans, floral tops and sneakers. That is certainly a style recipe for me. I am really enjoying your journey and got the book out of the library. Read it in a day but need to do some of the tasks 😊

Wear the pinstripes as separates for a while. Wear the jacket just like a jean jacket. Wear the trousers with prints or solids in a more relaxed way. As a full on suit they can read formal but as separates I think they can be either. All the colored separates would be great with the pinstripes or pinstripes with them.

Amazing that you kept your jeans from the 90's and wonderful that they fit! I have trouser style jeans I made way back in 1983. I remember at the time thinking why can't I be as thin as I was before I had 3 children, who were aged 4, 4, and 2. Now when I pull them out and look at them, I can't believe how tiny they are. At age 65 I am still slim, but definitely not that slim nor do I want to be. Crazy how we see ourselves. I feel we are style sisters. So much of what you wear and want to make is me! I would definitely say my style is colour, comfort, and at this time of year, cozy. I look forward to the next chapter in your curated closet.

I’m only half way through your video but I have to stop and leave so I want to leave a message and then watch rest later. I too wear a lot of black and am trying more color. Thank you so much for this extensive video. You are farther along in the book than me. I so agree with you on the questions. I will say, the outfit that you really don’t like surprised me because it brightened your face so beautifully. I can’t tell but it looks orange which is a good color for you. I have more to say but I won’t bore you.

The True Bias Lander pants would be cute as jeans and have a version of patch pocket that could be modified to be a totally square patch pocket easily enough if that's what you want. And the wide legs make it almost exactly like the ones from your past. They seem to have a high waist too.

Glad to know you are doing well and are feeling much better and more energized. Beautiful jacket. Nah, do not top stitch the lapel. If you want to try a small bit on the back part of the collar. You may find it detracts from the beautifully constructed jacket. Are your pocket flaps topstitched? Just a thought.

The jacket looks fabulous! I also love a good long skirt. My best discoveries are: the LaForme 0610 by LaForme and the Carnaby Skirt by HotPaterns (Etsy). I've made the last one four times and love each one version. The skirt has buttons at the front which is perfect. Sometimes winter fabrics are too heavy for A-line, voluminous skirts. Partly unbattoned Carnaby Skirt looks (and feels) amazing with Dr. Martens or any other heavy boots. Thanks for the very informative vlog!

The jacket is looking fabulous. If you like an oversized sweatshirt, you need a Style Arc Fenix. The photos I've seen of it made up are no good. They all seem to be too snug and too short. Make it properly oversized and it looks great. The winter fabric with drape has to be wool crepe. It's not cheap but it is delicious. Long, denim skirts are everywhere at the moment. For a straighter skirt, have you considered going with the denim styling but with needle cord for a winter vibe and a great ranch of colours. Brown bottoms with a light blue/grey sweater is a classic. I've been thinking of resurrecting a late 1970's style of along shirt topped with a shorter knitted waistcoat rather than a vest. It was a favourite of mine as a teenager and I was always very comfy in it. Talking of which, comfort should definitely be your first adjective. It is clearly important to you that you are comfortable no matter what you wear. If you do decide to make a plain straight skirt, consider going for a stretch. You will find it much easier to wear and it can still look smart. I have an ankle length jersey one with slits up both sides and it's incredibly versatile. xx

I was super concerned about doing your fabric justice and I have to admit I’m really chuffed with how the jacket has turned out, so thank you xx. Funnily enough I was admiring someone wearing a knitted waistcoat earlier in the week! I think I’ll put the straight skirt on the back burner for now, I’m just not convinced it’ll get worn. Hope all’s well ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Alex - I know this one was long but I really enjoyed it. You brought up many things that made me stop & think, to consider. I think you're a Spring. I had my colors done ages ago & I'm an Autumn. I love the long skirts but as I am only 5'3" I don't think they would look good on me. I will have to go out to a store & try some on. Your blazer looks fantastic. What a phenomenal job you did!. I'm both enjoying & learning from your closet journey. Keep up the good work.

I have pinned the exact same picture with the velvet jacket!
I absolutely love the mix of prints and different tones. I think that is a great way to keep your wardrobe from being "boring." Trying different textures, combining different levels of dressiness (velvet + wool + denim), different shades of neutrals + a pop of color.
That's kind of what I have settled into, and it's pretty easy to combine neutral base layers with a colorful scarf or cardigan, a smart blazer over a relaxed skirt, etc.
I would love to see how you could style your old pinstripes with other items in your wardrobe.
    Green looks great on you!

    • @downtoearthsewing
      @downtoearthsewing Рік тому

@@AlexJudgeSews perhaps as part of the process can be sorting out which prints work for you. I am very drawn to colorful prints, but I simply drawn in them. I can do small scale geometric prints, like stripes and maybe pin dots, but that's it. Or subtle prints like the texture of tweed.
I can have fun with scarves and use pretty prints there. Somehow a solid color outfit with a wild print scarf always works.

Over the past couple of years I've really tried to think about putting together a good-looking casual wardrobe, which I think is hard. Back in the summer, I bought a satin slip skirt from M&S. Although it had all the advantages of looking like a bias cut, It actually was cut on the straightgrain but had a godet on one side. It was very popular and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they have done a winter version. Might be worth a look when you hit the shops. Really enjoyed your in-depth video. Thank you for carrying on with curating your closet! 😊I did check that book out from our library a few years ago, and I never made it past "name three adjectives" business. I like the look of that mood board app, may check that out. It would help to have a full length mirror, though, which I've never had ( or missed) until about 2018. I doesn't get a lot of use 😛 . Every year I make another couple pairs of jeans, but I've found there is a lot of variety in colors, shapes, etc. so it never LOOKS like I'm wearing the same thing every day. I made it earlier this year - it,s maxi and has darts at the back which I found very flattering. I sized up one size to avoid the cling and have ended up with more of an a line style. Agree on the styling though - not straight forward. Sophie x

For the A-line skirt - have you seen the Luce trousers from Tauko no 6? they're a kind of culotte/wide leg trouser with a panel across the front - I'm pretty keen to make them - they've used a textured panel at the front but a pin stripe would look ace too - gives a similar silhouette to the skirts you're looking at. They also styled them with the most amazing shoes...

Re: slip skirts. I made a Grasser 669 (a free pattern, so maybe the one you made?). I was also really concerned about slip skirts being too clingy or unforgiving, which is what I chose that pattern, as it has a more relaxed shape and a smoother waistline than some. Also, I made it in cupro and lined it with bamboo jersey sewn into a straight skirt shape - this contains everything I want contained and allows me to wear tights with it without it clinging. Doesn't help you with the length issue, I know, but it would address some of your concerns.

I love pinstripes and checks too! Stripes in general, especially black and white. I can totally see that pinstripe jacket you own over jeans and a white tee shirt!
I think our style is fairly similar….I also love a long skirt even though I only own one. I had to return my copy of the book and for some reason it’s no longer available from the library so I might have to buy it!
You can add a triangle of bias in the corner to extend the length of a bias cut skirt. The bit that hangs off the edge can be cut and seamed. I’ve done it in the past…many years ago…and it worked well!
    Love your inspiration boards!
I’ve had my eye on the stylearc coat for a while and have some bright green or cobalt blue wool….might have to think about that for next winter.
Never too long, loved the video!

Very interested to hear your emerging conclusions about your preferred style. I find I am sharing your aversion to colourful , splashy patterns even though I am drawn to them in the fabric shop. They are hard to integrate into a mix and match wardrobe. I haven’t used all the suggestions in the book but have particularly enjoyed collecting pictures of clothes that reflect the style I aspire to. I think I am going to select the best of the best and produce my own style bible to which I will refer when choosing new patterns and fabrics. This will help me to avoid the siren call of one-off loud patterns and choose items that will integrate with garments already in my wardrobe. Thanks for suggesting The Curated Closet. Just to confirm, the Parker coat pattern is super easy and quick to sew, is great to wear and looks good too.

Interesting thinking about style as opposed to what we really wear because what I want to make and how I see myself is very different to what I actually wear. I have fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue so I am at home 90% of the time, I have a lot of all body pain and I’m fighting depression so I like to wear bright colours, like you I love green and orange, I also love purple, teal, red and gold (warm yellows). Most days I’m wearing very soft jersey fabrics due to pain levels and I’ve even worked out leaving the house clothes I can wear in jersey so I’m always comfortable. I used to be strictly a jeans and tshirt girl, very 90s grunge but jeans hurt now.

Hi Alex, I know you've been doing a bit of knitting and when you mentioned scarves and wearing them I wondered if you'd seen dominirose and her SoHo Square pattern on ravelry? By far my favourite outfit on you is the camel tank (shortened version) top with the shirt underneath, it's so interesting to see all the outfits next to each other! I think it's very difficult when you lose weight, to see/accept the reality of your new shape and the opportunities it brings in terms of styles that will now look good. The outfit you liked least, the dress/denim jacket - definitely 1980's social worker!

I loved this. I didn't expect to, but, except for size, (I'm heavier than you) you and I are so similar with clothing style, colours that suit us, lifestyle, etc., everything you said was as if I was doing it myself. Have you looked at the Friday pattern company Bernadette skirt? For some reason, I thought you might have already made it. But it comes in maxi length, is pretty much a-lined (except it has front pleats), and it even has a cute pouch that attaches to the waistband, like the one you thought was cute in one of the photos. It would be cute with a shirt and layered with a sweater vest. And of course with your long coat over all, and likely with your Dock Martin's.

Another Excellent video ❤. I'm short (talking 5' nothing) so I can't do your style but i love watching and learning. I'm going to take a crack at my interpretation of what i see in your style if that's okay with you 🤞. Casual chic. Take that as two adjectives or just one. (Dictionary says chic is elegantly and stylishly fashionable). The Dictionary meaning of fashionable is (characteristics of, influenced by or representing a current popular trend or style). And casual is (suited for everyday wear). Yes, im saying "casual chic" with some experimental and avant-garde elements. You also tend to include a small amount of classic styles but I wouldn't say that was your main adjective as I feel you are more Chic than classic. That's what i see. ❤ having said that I believe we are all chameleons and dress in more adjectives than just a few depending on how we feel. What do you think? Oh, and by the way I think you should totally try adding a mini skirt and do it up your style 😊

I've sewn 7 pair of Saguaro pants in all sorts of fabrics up to now (2 for my son's girlfriend), several in medium tencel (Meet Milk - by the ways "Frog" might be the green you're after) for autumn and winter. Love this pattern , I have hacked it into a denim tencel sort of cargo and changed the pockets to mix it up a little) Also, my three words for your style, if I dare say, would be classic : edgy, casual (But I'm struggling to find mine ;-) )

Hi Alex 👋 this was a really interesting exercise! I keep a mood board in my Pinterest and you are inspiring me to have a really good dig into my wardrobe, give it a good clean out and sort through my clothes. I suspect there may be quite a lot of culling, with plans to then add back in what I do actually wear! Thanks so much for sharing all this information, it's very helpful indeed!
The Parker coat pattern and fabric are near the top of my sewing list, even though I won't really need it for some months yet. Have you also made the Parker pants? I have both patterns as they're my kind of style, just not gotten to making either yet. I like the idea of the longer straight skirts teamed with a boxy top and long coat. I'm slowly adding to my collection of hand knit jumpers, cardigans, shawls, wraps and mitts to accessorise with. I also like that this prompted you to look at different types of jewellery and what your likes/dislikes are, so maybe I should get busy with some jewellery making too ♥ I think i shall be referring back to these lessons quite a bit in the future!

@@AlexJudgeSews yes the Parker pants are in ponte as well. It's a straight forward pattern and an easy make. I'd appreciate your opinion if you have made them, as other feedback is always good 👍 thanks Alex. ETA i forgot to mention that I've ordered my Style Arc patterns printed and the paper quality is quite good, heavier than big 4 patterns tissue paper. I don't know what difference it would make for you cost wise, but here in Australia it's only a couple of dollars extra plus the postage, so in comparison to the cost of A4 paper and printing at home, its quite reasonable I feel.
