And sure, you can make the argument that we, the rejects, don't know anything because we aren't told anything. But I find that argument somewhat asinine. We're the players of the game, not the actual reject. We should see the plot play out, even if our characters don't
There’s dialogue during a mission where the veteran asks Lola about a “sister Hive” to the main hive where the game is set, but she just shuts the question down saying “that’s classified, soldier”. This raises a bunch of questions and theories about what happened there, but my theory is that the sister hive was something of a ground-zero, and the situation there was so bad that the inquisition declared it a lost cause and either performed a local exterminatus, or perhaps even the Grey Knights are on deployment there; which would of course be a secret to literally everyone except the top brass of the Imperial forces in the system, and maybe unbeknownst even to them. Just a thought, but I think it makes sense. Ties back also to a previous Dan Abnett narrative where Vervunhive was besieged by the entire population of its sister hive which had fallen to Chaos.
I was thinking the other Hive was dealing with a Genestealer Cult but honestly what you said about Grey Knights being deployed makes a lot of sense. Since when any of the voice lines ask about it every character with authority immediately tells them its safer they don't know which lines up with GK lore.
Imagine how amazing it would be having another game in the other hives, maybe as Greyknights or other Imperium force. Doesnt need to be a first person horde game as well, just in the area.
Nurgle's plague is not just a physical sickness as we know it, it's also a corruption of the soul. In the world of 40K, Faith truly has weight and power. However, Nurgle's rot normally acts by infecting you and making you so sick that it eats away at your will and resolve to the point that you give up and start wishing for death instead but despite it all, you still cling on to life and that's when Nurgle comes in and makes his offer that you will no longer feel any pain if you embrace him. I theorise that our characters actually do get sick but their hate for Chaos covers them in the "armour of contempt" which protects them from the soul corruption, so when they come back they go through a form of quarantine, get treated, decontaminated then back on the ship they go. But as a result of that they will never be free as fighting Chaos is a death sentence in itself but they get to fight against the Emperor's enemies for as long as they stand or their soul's armour break.
Well, the Inquisition is above Imperial law, so our characters would not be discarded after this fight, but would instead be continually employed as Inquisitorial agents or shock troops until death. The "execute because they had contact with Chaos at all" thing is more of a malfunction of the Grey Knights than a true Imperial law anyway. People who actively destroy Chaos followers and avoid corruption with the power of their faith are usually rewarded and taken into positions of power or military roles that allow their expertise to further disrupt heresy. Unless, of course, the person in question does not agree to keep Chaos a secret from his fellow Imperials who lack clearance. Knowledge of Chaos is dangerous if it reaches weaker souls of lesser faith.
Faith as a Shield is definitely a great theory. Belief in the Emperor, or hell, even just the Imperium, as the Emperor IS the Imperium, is sufficient protection against Nurgle's plague. Add to it decontamination, whatever cures the Ordo has on hand, I cannot argue. Otherwise we would all be 1 And Done expendables.
@ combinecommando001 this hasnt been lore in a decade or more fighting chaos isnt a death sentence anymore. why does everyone still say this, kinda hard to hide it with half the universe attacked by chaos space marines.
@@bas-tn3um it's not really about hiding its existence but rather that when you fight Chaos, you're pretty much made to focus on that because you're experienced in it. Sort of like expertise and the Imperium doesn't like to let go of its best and brightest veterans who are really good at killing the many varied enemies.
From my own gleaming's of the game, the hive atoma is, Karked for a lack of a better term, there is [a?] demon intertwining itself within the hive, long and interconnected. Further, their grimoires aren't...Normal. For a chaos cult. They have spinning gears, things less about the plague and more about. Machines. It is my belief that the forces arrayed on Atoma has a dark mechanicus / Mechanical bent, which in my limited knowledge, is odd for a nurgle cult. And perhaps explains why they are so keen of taking the metal. It is also my belief that the hive is doomed, as the self spreading daemon cannot be easily removed without simply destroying the hive. It has infested the walls. The ordo malleus, the inquisition arm interwoven with fighting daemonic things, should probably be called over. But the odd counterpoint is, that it simply hasn't done the expected. The hive isn't one continuous mash of daemon self perpetual growth. It is moving. Slowly. And that alone means there is still time for the planet itself.
If you look at the plague Ogryn you can see some rusted chimney pipes on his back. And maybe the grimoires belong to some Death Guard warband, or they were particular imperial books, chaosified.
@@Stefanius058 Well, it literally has the death guard's symbol on the very front, three skulls with three arrows in the middle of the skulls. Except modified further as each skull has four skulls pointing further away, so it might not be OG Death guard, but a splitoff from that warband. Further there is some other markings on the tome, fairly common nurgle bits, three circles, three arrows, but there's also the big fuckoff circle with just arrows pointing in all directions, a common chaos symbol by itself. But it's mostly the fact that it's made out of gears, and the gear motif implies a very different conontation than the death guard's normal shenanigans.
I think the cults name is partly because of how nurgle is as a faction, like how nurgle feels he is being generous when offering mortals his blessing, and is annoyed or sad when they reject his offer, but simply believes that they are being ignorant. In his eyes, he is showing mortals a better path, so the name admonition fits a decent amount of the faction as a whole.
Curiously in the game it isnt often seen that the Moebian 6th and the Cult are working together so i kind of wonder if maybe the leaders of the respective factions have differing plans that dont necessarily have them hate each other, but more so kind of have a distrustful partnership to one another. Would make some sense as infighting is common in chaos factions and as far as we know currently the leaders of the two groups are likely human mortals. Most definately likely that the leader of the Moebian 6th is a Colonel, Commissar, or some other ranking officer. Where as the Cult is potentially lead by either a Powerful and spiteful house, psyker, or a Heretical Ganger leader. These two leader types would definately have very differing opinions on how to go about corrupting Tertium and Atoma. Would be nice though if the Cultists had a expanded weapon set to reflect that they dont have standardized weapons instead of just having all the ranged guys with Space AK-47.
@@superspies32 undivided symbols show up even in pretty much every chaos warband, it's just generical symbols. they don't hold any indication other then 'we are chaos guys'
Some things of note: Infection vectors in Nurgle's plagues don't always.... apply conventional logic. There's moments in lore where simply hearing the infected sing their songs of plague can start the process. Sometimes it's just looking at them. But other times you can be knee deep in the dead and stay strong. It's said not to be just a physical plague, but one of the soul as well. I mean in lore you SHOULD be shooting out of both ends in the presence of a beast of Nurgle, while your lasgun actively rusts and breaks apart/decays in your hands. For obvious reasons, that's not a thing in gameplay, but I just wanted to bring it up lol
Belief in the God-Emperor can help ward off the Warp in some cases, if the will of the believer is strong enough. Wonder if the fact the Rejects are running around with more Preists than a Maccabian Jannisary unit might have something to do with it.

Thanks for making a Lore video on Darktide! The lore in-game is rather piecemeal, and while that makes it fun to learn and put it together, it also means we can't really directly reference much of this stuff. Feels like there needs to be a Vaatividya for this game to dig up all the hidden lore.

Great video, I play this game all the time and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a succinct explanation of what has been going on. It’s also really interesting to see all the parallels between it and Necromunda lore, in addition to some of the enemies being almost direct copies of units from the Necromunda tabletop game
Great summary! I had no idea that the upper houses within Atoma were to blame for the cults. Some psyker voicelines hint that there is something buried deep beneath Tertium's surface which must be destroyed, so I am interested to see if we learn anything else about that.
It would be a true cluster of massive proportions if there were a Tyranid Genestealer cult that had taken over the other hive city, a Necron tomb beneath the surface, and Chaos cultists in Tertium. All we’d need is some Dark Eldar and a Ork invasion to make it a real party.
I would love Dark Eldar as a third party boss event with a small chance of occuring. Imagine having a portal open up and a raider/ravager boss health bar showing up. Kalabite Warriors and Wyches leaping off to attack/capture the rejects and cultists alike! @@Shadowfalls89
@@Shadowfalls89 The only issue I'd see with nids, and maybe even genestealers, showing up as their own forces would be the extent of the Cult of Admonition's control. It's not unheard of for genestealers to get corrupted by Chaos and when that happens the Nids usually go the other way. Particularly if Nurgle's involved. And I can't see the Cult of Admonition ignoring a rival to their iron grip of the underhive. Whether by integration or eradication. Still by the sounds of it there may be Necrons. But I believe it's something else. It could be some sort of daemonic artifact or a daemon. Just look at the shit the daemon of Tartarus did while it was still shackled, or the Lord of Meat of Necromunda
According to Bricky, if there are Nurgle Daemons, like the Beast of Nurgle, then there must be something bleeding Warp energy into the Real World. So I'm guessing that is what's buried under Tertium.
I just hope we get traditional story-focussed missions like those in VT2 about this kind of stuff for level 30 characters that have already completed the "base" story of ascending from the ranks of the rejects to enter the service of Inquisitor Grendyl.
It’s interesting how Grendyl’s forces didn’t know about the cult. They seemed to believe at first this was a regiment turning traitor. It’s not until the sycorax mission that they suspected the moebian sixth had help. I wonder if they’ll be a mission where we have to capture or eliminate someone of the HVTs of the cult to learn more about them.
I have another theory though it could tie into yours. I think the Cult of Admonition started as something different. A localized version of the Imperial Creed that had very strong populistic sentiments. This is far from unheard of in 40k, even IRL in our modern age within geographical regions there are aspects of faith that are different (for example Roman Catholic bishops in Hong Kong don't wear certain colors as some of their usual colors are assumed to be bad luck). And with the Imperium as massive as it is (and the still lingering scars of the last time there was one version of the Imperial Creed) the Imperium and Ecclesiarchy tolerate a lot of different views. As for what the Cult of Admonition's original tenets were I'd have to say in addition to populistic treatment of the common hiver it also preached asceticism, repentance, and a general criticism of the ruling class' extravagance. You see this a lot as well in 40k, just look at the Cult of Redemption. Or the Cult of the Four Armed Emperor. As it's also not unheard of for Chaos and other hostile forces to use the mask of religion, in the form of a mystery cult, to lure in recruits. Whether the cult was a Nurgle cult all along or it was corrupted along the way, I'm not sure if it even matters. The rise to power, combatting the cartels, establishing order in the underhive, that still flies, but less as a disciplined political paramilitary and more the fanatical zealotry of a crusade or jihad. And as for their infiltration of the upper hive, the Barquette's could have been funneling money to them all along, hoping to use them as a catspaw. Or, and perhaps more insidiously, the Barquettes got subtly taken over by the cult. It wouldn't be the first time a cult took over a house, just look at House Cawdor.
Bro what is this and why is it the perfect kind of video I wanted, recommended on my UA-cam front page; who are you, and why do I feel like you're about to be my number one favorite content creator.
Tbh, lets be honest. The Inquisition stepping in may not really be enough for Tertium or Atoma. Inquisitorial strike teams may be doing well, or getting slaughtered, but what's really needed at least are a few loyal Guard regiments to step in as well. They have both the numbers *and* equipment numerous enough to turn tides in hive cities. A single ship under the service of the Inquisition along with whatever forces already in the hive wont be enough, way i see it.
At the start of several missions, we can see local forces holding defensive positions to keep the heretics boxed in. But they probably don't have the numbers to push in and clear out lost areas. I want there to be some larger scale battles. I know gameplay limitations prevent us from taking part in the big stuff, but I'd be happy with a big battle going on in the out of bounds areas around a mission, as background filler, while we do our strike team thing
@@DatBrasss Tbh I always figured they were Inquisition forces but never did look hard enough. Though it's been mentioned in some cases they wouldn't last long against an assault. Specifically the one map with the two demolishers and squads guarding one end of a bridge
I’ve always found the Dregs more annoying to deal with, especially in larger groups. They are surprisingly resilient to attacks, I was left dumbfounded many times when the Dreg I’ve just shot my plasma into is not yet a smear of burnt gore staining the wall. That resilience may be due to Nurgle’s gifts, as an unarmoured Dreg is almost as tough or, dare I say, just as tough as a flak armoured Scab.
You're not the only one in this: I've found dreg gunners to be terrifying menaces, and scab gunners far more manageable, even with their carapace armour. I shudder to think what a plague marine would be like tbh.
@@Wathcer101 My guess is that the Scabs aren't as deep into the cult as the Dregs are. they were likely in league with the dregs at first as secessionists but got hooked into the whole Nurgle cult later down the line, they're sick and in pain, whereas the Dreg are fully embedded in Nurgle's gift where they don't feel pain anymore.

Bruh, you gave me more answers and insight in 10 minutes than Fatshark has in over a year, shame that such interesting lore is being left at the wayside in favour of more $20 cosmetic sets
Nice vid! It remindes of watching lore videoes on Elden Ring or Dark Souls. I really like how you put all of the lore together in an "character voice" and not news guy
Walking Pox spreads by physical means (as in touch, fluids, airborne, waterborne) and by their groans and other zombie vocalizations (power of the warp). But as is the power of the Warp, strong belief that you cannot be infected can be enough to keep people safe from final stages of infection, afterwards it is quarantine for the people and often extermination, but for the rejects, they have the advantage of the Inquisition seeing some value of their servants, so they will often get medical treatment afterwards.
The fact the cult has endured and grown beyond something that could be controlled shows the nature of Nurgle perfectly. It shows the endurance of Nurgle and its spread can be compared to that of diseases and plagues.
I always thought the Dregs were followers of the corrupted Guard regiment and that guardsman fell to chaos off world but hid it from higher ups until returning to their home world

That sill makes Korne happy regardless of if they are killing his armys
@ combinecommando001 this hasnt been lore in a decade or more fighting chaos isnt a death sentence anymore.
why does everyone still say this, kinda hard to hide it with half the universe attacked by chaos space marines.
@@bas-tn3um it's not really about hiding its existence but rather that when you fight Chaos, you're pretty much made to focus on that because you're experienced in it. Sort of like expertise and the Imperium doesn't like to let go of its best and brightest veterans who are really good at killing the many varied enemies.
I get a “FilmComicsExplained” vibe from you and I absolutely love it.
That is some high praise! Thankyou mate
0:22 in terms of smell, appearance, living in an echo chamber, and inability for others to tolerate being around them? Yes. Reddit moderators.
For now I think the 6th have more or less sworn themselves to serve the Cult, though can definitely see a future where some infighting takes place
There are Chaos Undivided symbol across the map, some next to Nurgle's symbol so definitely behind both faction is Failbaddon's followers

I painted up my chaos cultists to look like the Darktide dregs, they came out pretty good.
Capac in the wild!
Some things of note:
Infection vectors in Nurgle's plagues don't always.... apply conventional logic.

Feels like there needs to be a Vaatividya for this game to dig up all the hidden lore.
ive always wondered why there's no gangers down there... your explanation does make sense though, and ive never noticed the dead ganger corpses either in all my 600+ hrs. crazy
I don't remember the exact name, but they appear on 2 maps near an elevator entrance.
I believe it is the Habzone HL-18-66 "The Torrent" map, but yep there is a whole heap of dead ones at the base of the elevator - where you have to do the investigation scan. The rejects often comment here about how bloody good it is that the infected and the gangs are killing each other
@@dystopianchimp Doesn't Zola have some lines in the slums about the crime lords and gangs down there and some implication she rose out of the slums? Hard to remember the dialogue sometimes when the music and lasguns go hard.
@@WWFanatic0Not just an implication, she outright states she grew up in The Torrent and worked hard to escape. She has a few lines where she voices her great disdain for the gangs and Water Cartel, and stating Tertium is a better place without them.
Those Water Cartel people with the purple outfits?
The dregs are the cult leaders? So that's why the traitor guard bows to them in that one cut scene! We all assumed they were the leaders because they were stronger and that it was just a mistake but it makes sense now!
Really good video my lad
I'd be curious if you could do a dive into the lore of other 40k games
Thanks mate! I'd say thats definitely on the cards, especially when (if) space marine 2 comes out this year
Love your vids btw
@@dystopianchimp the pessimistic part of me knows it'll be delayed somehow
I like this!
5:15 the stubbers suppression would shut those gunners down super quick.
prob the best way of dealing with them.
Bro what is this and why is it the perfect kind of video I wanted, recommended on my UA-cam front page; who are you, and why do I feel like you're about to be my number one favorite content creator.
Haha thanks mate ❤️ glad you found the channel
@@Wathcer101Scab gunners, I've noticed, are easier to deal with due to the fact you can easily tell where they are- the lasbolts are a dead giveaway for their position
I wish there were more presentation of other chaos in this game.
It would give more variety of enemies.
Vatividya for Darktide. Excellent.
6:41 I like how you said "what ramained of the populace", as if there is very little people remaining that isn't infected yet. It is said that 90 billion people lives on the planet. Even if the plague infected half of the hive there is still tens of billions that have not fallen for the plague yet
Keep up this quality and this channel will blow up broski. Subbed.
Why does your video have more lore than all of Darktide's storytelling? excellent video, I'm sharing this with friends.

Damn, your videos have such a high production quality... I'm really happy to have found your channel :) Can't wait to see your growth, keep going!

Darktide is my favorite game. And this is now my favorite lore vid.
The fact the cult has endured and grown beyond something that could be controlled shows the nature of Nurgle perfectly. It shows the endurance of Nurgle and its spread can be compared to that of diseases and plagues.
i often hear them groan morphing into a strained cry for help
I always thought the Dregs were followers of the corrupted Guard regiment and that guardsman fell to chaos off world but hid it from higher ups until returning to their home world
The dregs might be iron warriors allined, as they have hazard stripes painted all over their armor
@@themelon_1785scabs* and sadly no for two reasons: the iron warriors detest the dark gods, and instead of worshipping Gods they enslave daemons in daemon engines. The hazard stripes only appear on scab shotgunners and scab gunners, which I think is mostly there as an artistic choice to help them stick out in a massive crowd
No the stripes are on every scab unit + the orgyns, ive checked it before, also they dont have to alline with the iron warrior mindset completely, they could just be inspired/allies, or they could be useful pawns that the iron warriors are employing, so they let them put the stripes on their armour and call them friends but secretly they hate the scabs for being nurgle allined, among other possible justifications@@Nomadith
