Cole, have you done a MCU upgrade? That’s what the amazon seller told me to do but didn’t send me the file. My controller for CIC is controlling the old unit and the apple CarPlay interface at the same time. Very annoying.
Greg Vining I did not upgrade anything, you said it’s controlling them at the same time what does that look like? And the only update I would do is the one from bmw on their website.
Cole Yuhas it’s 2011 bmw 528i cic system. For instance if I’m using CarPlay and the background oem system is on volume, when I rotate the controller it moved the curser for CarPlay and also turns up and down the volume.
Greg Vining I have never had that happen to me, but first thing I would do is set a radio preset for aux this way you can switch to CarPlay audio without switching to the oem system. Then I would update your software by putting in your vin on the bmw website, downloading the software to a hard drive the plugging it into your center console.

Great video, planning to buy this on Amazon soon for my F30 with CIC and I'm definitely going to keep referring to this video as a guide. Regarding the mic installation, does the installation of the new mic cable not affect the functionality of the OEM telephone feature? Or will the mic still support the standard telephone connection (let's say if i don't want to use the Road Top Android auto)
Right so the mic will still support the functionality of the original telephone if you install it with the second video I made or the way I did it in the first video. One thing I would keep in mind is the button on the steering wheel when using the CarPlay activates both most times but if your not using CarPlay it won’t be connected so it won’t be an issue. My way around this is when using CarPlay I hold the center button down and it activates Siri. But yes originally function of the car will be obtained as if you didn’t install it.
Also when installing you need to watch my second video regarding the control module as you need to set up the harness for that unlike what I said in this video.
It has been a while since I made this and I haven’t had an issue with it, if you’ve got any questions while installing just let me know because I was struggling to find help which is why I made this in the first place🤙
Hey Awesome video. Plannning to buy one. However, I'm confused why you had to connect the cable to the Aux port and also why can't we use the factory mic? Is there no way to connect the factory mic with an extended cable or something?
RAS The aux cable connects to the system as it’s an aux device it’s just the way it is you can’t not use it or there will be no sound. And NO SYSTEMS us the factory mic as it’s clearly not really possible. And the aux cable needs to be squeezed through from the radio and it’s hard but defiantly possible.
Cole Yuhas Thanks for the swift response! Ah okay I get it. What about the USB port on the Drivers side what’s that for? Does that replace the USB port in the hand rest or the one in the dash board? Also I watched the video a few times still can’t figure where you places the module after connecting.
RAS the usb is for plugging in your phone to charge or to use to connect to CarPlay without wireless. Honestly there’s not a certain spot you have to put the module, but there’s space where you can shove it behind the screen.
Cole Yuhas Thanks a lot for your support! Really appreciate it. Probably gonna get one soon. I think it’s been a month since you installed it. How is it? Are there any issues? I saw a few people posting regarding the other person not being able to hear during a call and the scroll wheel not working. Kindly advise :)
RAS yeah no problems really one time it shut down for a few seconds because it lost wireless connection but really no problems otherwise. And the scroll wheel doesn’t work for me at least but I didn’t expect it to as it’s impossible for it to recognize an aux that’s not connected to it I drive, volume and voice activation is enough especially for $300 you can’t get to picky. Thanks for watching my video!

Hi Cole, thanks very much for the video -- was a big help for installation !!! Question for everybody here, how is the audio quality with the roadtop in your car (connected via the aux cable) ? I have the impression for my car there is some bandwith limitation...
Kai Schug I was worried about that too! But the wired quality is the exact same. And the wireless CarPlay compared to the Bluetooth on the car sounds a littler bit better then oem. If the quality sounds bad when using CarPlay then it’s because your idrive volume controller for aux devices needs to be half way, but other then that it sounds great.
Just checked the cables, the labels look different to the ones you show in your 2nd video (I have the CIC version). There are two different options to connect: one for high speed CAN bus one for low speed can bus, you know which to use for F07 car ?
Kai Schug I have the CIC as well how are the wires different? The only wires that should be different are the idrive controller wires as you either use the big connecter or the small connector. I couldn’t tell you the idrive controller wire you use but you will clearly see when you go to install it.
The installation could take anywhere from an hour to three. Depending on how quick you are, it’s not too difficult, and remember watch this video ua-cam.com/video/tn0tYF9GuVQ/v-deo.html for idrive controller! You need confidence too, good luck let me know if you need anything!

sinus cosinus I’m guessing your screen is small? This means you need to change your box switches for different screen sizes read the directions to your product it’ll say there or watch my video and try that.
I think I wrote not clear, sorry, here again: I have the big screen (10.25 inc), android auto is on the hole 10.25", but in two halfs, the apps are on about 70% of the screen, on right side (on ca. 30% of the screen) you see information for clock, weather, musik etc., but I want it like carplay, one hole screen with apps etc., do you know how can I do that? Thank you.
sinus cosinus if your module is always 70% even from the start then it’s your box but when your connected on android auto and it’s only 70% then check settings in the module itself.
OK I found out it has to do with android itself (for many people it works with developement modus of androit auto and then set the video resolution up to 1080p, but this also does not work for me, i will contact the support), nice thing is that with my Xiaomi Mi 9t pro also android auto work wireless, thats very cool :)

Ok so it sounds like your CarPlay box isn’t set to your screen, in the video I show which switched to click on for my system, read the instructions on what switches you need set some are different then others. If it goes black it’s most likely because your idrive module isn’t connected I made a video to help! ua-cam.com/video/tn0tYF9GuVQ/v-deo.html
Hey man hope you’re doing good. I have installed the Road Top device but I’m not really happy with it because: 1. The screen keeps going off after every 5 mins and after 15-20 mins of operation it goes black then comes on after 5 mins. It’s like it’s refreshing or something. I have the settings on the road top with the 3,4 switch down. Do you reckon it will fix with changing it to 1,2,3? 2. While I’m using the CarPlay area or the road top GUI the iDrive mouse is also working in the background on the OEM iDrive GUI. So for example I am doing something in CarPlay let’s say on the google maps it’ll start doing the same thing in the iDrive and then suddenly you’ll realize that it took you to radio mode. It’s kinda annoying tbh. Could you let me know if these problems happened with you or anyone else on here and if so what was the fix? Thanks
RAS I’ve heard people with this problem, and recently I’ve notice it happen a couple times but not every 15 min and only when I first start my car it’s happened like 3 times, and I originally thought it was because it was too hot or something so when my car cools down it stops, it’s scary as shit too when it goes black you think that your car just died at first. I thought maybe it was just me, very upset to hear this, and Never had the radio problem but what I would recommend is that you set a preset for aux so that when you switch to apple CarPlay it doesn’t switch audio. As of know I will get in contact with the company and recommend that you set the aux to a preset and disconnect your battery and reconnect it.
RAS Also do you think it’s because it wirelessly connected or are you plugged in, I’m never connected and I think that maybe it might just be loosing connection? So I’ll I’ve to connect with my Apple cord and see if it does this and if it does not I will most likely move my antenna and get the box in a cooler part.
Cole Yuhas Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. How can I preset it at Aux? Sorry a noob question but haven’t done this before. Also for me the screen dies but if there’s a song playing it’ll continue playing so I really doubt it’s losing connection. I’ve connected wireless and if you really wanna check if it’s losing connection trying playing a song on UA-cam. I did it and the screen just goes off or restarts a few times but the song is continuously playing.

EDIT: I did this and made a video please watch if your having this problem! Thanks ua-cam.com/video/tn0tYF9GuVQ/v-deo.html
Cole Yuhas Hey this is what my screen is doing. It basically does this totally randomly 3 times in a row and then it’s alright for 20-30 mins and then does it again 3 times. Also the frequency of it doing that increases if I use google maps or extensively use the CarPlay. ua-cam.com/video/EtFQwbcDERU/v-deo.html. Road Top customer service told me the exact same thing you mentioned that it was from the iDrive harness. I installed the harness only for troubleshooting the iDrive controller. I don’t think that’s related to screen losing signal as you said that once in your previous comments. I can try it tomorrow using CarPlay through the usb cable to confirm the loss of signal. I have contacted and sent the video to road too as well waiting for them to reply.
Cole Yuhas Oh like completely blacked out and takes ages to come back on? Mine was doing that too. In that case maybe the harness might help! It hasn’t happened to me since I installed the harness but this is what is still happening to the screen randomly.

It has been a while since I made this and I haven’t had an issue with it, if you’ve got any questions while installing just let me know because I was struggling to find help which is why I made this in the first place🤙
@@coleyuhas7891 awesome 😉 will do!
Is there a way to make it not automatically switch to carplay (remain in iDrive) at start up? Thanks.
GodKing804 not really sure if usually starts up at main menu and sometimes starts connected so not really
How did u connect the iDrive controller? did u remove the CAN jumper?
I ended up making a new video connecting the I drive controller ua-cam.com/video/tn0tYF9GuVQ/v-deo.html
Hi Cole, I have a question and maybe you can help me. I just tried to install my apple carplay but i got an issue with the idrive controller. When the wire is not connected with the idrive controller, the controller works but i can not go into the carplay menu by holding the menu button. As soon as i connect the wire with the idrive controller, the controller does not work anymore. I can press every button but nothing happens. I also wrote roadtop but i am waiting still for an answer.
Gotcha! did you watch this video by chance? ua-cam.com/video/tn0tYF9GuVQ/v-deo.html
@@coleyuhas7891 yes i already watched that video but i connected all the wires like you did on the video that is why i can not understand why it is not working
Argjend Kurtaj Argjend Kurtaj Did you make sure to plug the oem wire coming from your oem stereo?
Hi Cole, thanks very much for the video -- was a big help for installation !!!
Question for everybody here, how is the audio quality with the roadtop in your car (connected via the aux cable) ? I have the impression for my car there is some bandwith limitation...
Kai Schug I was worried about that too! But the wired quality is the exact same. And the wireless CarPlay compared to the Bluetooth on the car sounds a littler bit better then oem. If the quality sounds bad when using CarPlay then it’s because your idrive volume controller for aux devices needs to be half way, but other then that it sounds great.
Also make sure you watch my second video which wires the idrive controller correctly
Good video buddy as well!!
👍💪👍
Hey thanks for the video! I was wondering how long did the installation take? I have a 2011 535i bmw and want to install this!
The installation could take anywhere from an hour to three. Depending on how quick you are, it’s not too difficult, and remember watch this video ua-cam.com/video/tn0tYF9GuVQ/v-deo.html for idrive controller! You need confidence too, good luck let me know if you need anything!
@@coleyuhas7891 hey! First off I want to say thank you for responding. I have a second question, is it possible to upgrade the factory carplay screen the car came with to a higher definition one?
David Park I’m not sure about that, but honestly the quality is pretty good to begin with, I think you’ll be surprised. Compared to what the regular idrive looks like.
does ur stock microphone work when ur in car play? i almost everything you did in the video and mine did not work do you have any ideas on what it could be or how to get it to work?
Yes I do! Check out my video for mic installation, and you also need to do the i-drive wiring. ua-cam.com/video/tn0tYF9GuVQ/v-deo.html

Raymond Fiore sweet, I’m working on a build myself a 1984 Vanden Plas Jag, I’ll have to post abt it! Anyways lmk how that goes!
Hi there, awesome video! This helped me a lot, since the install guides from ROAD TOP are crappy as hell. Do your UP and DOWN buttons on your steering wheel work? Mine doesn't....
Danito Yes my volume button works does your voice button work?
@@coleyuhas7891 No I don't mean the volume buttons. The Up and Down Buttons for song selection. Voice/Siri works perfect. BTW: Without your video I would have gone nuts ;)
Danito oh the scroll wheel? Yeah I haven’t had any luck with it before I’ll let you know I’ll have to try it out again but I’m like 99% sure it does nothing sorry to say. And thank you, the top road installation video was useless they probably didn’t want to steer customers away with the complicity I’m guessing, and that’s exactly why I made this video so that if something went wrong I could save people from loosing money.
わ
Everything is connected correctly but my carplay is only on half screen. Can you help me get it to full screen?
You need to fix the switches on the back of the box! Every box is different it should be in the instructions and I show what I did in the start of my vid, hope this helps!
I saw a post saying in the new firmware you dont need microphone plug its all by bluethooth can you confirm that?
Hi how have you connected the idrive? Mine isn’t working
francesco maria Bandoli watch my second video it shows the wiring schematic! And if your screen isn’t working make sure you set the right numbers on the box.
@@coleyuhas7891 thanks! I have cic, all the switches are in off position
francesco maria Bandoli that’s not what the manual says is it working now?
@@coleyuhas7891 no 😅, what is it saying? Thanks for the other video i have connected it in the way you have shown
francesco maria Bandoli I’m guessing you don’t have a manual? And is your product from road top? It’s in the video let me find the switched
Will this work on 2011 bmw 1 series e87?

Hello, I saw in the comments to the product in aliexpress someone with same car as mine (bmw f10 cic 10") which has full screen for android auto, I have on the right side information about weather, clock etc., how can I get fullscreen in android auto?
sinus cosinus I’m guessing your screen is small? This means you need to change your box switches for different screen sizes read the directions to your product it’ll say there or watch my video and try that.
I think I wrote not clear, sorry, here again:
I have the big screen (10.25 inc), android auto is on the hole 10.25", but in two halfs, the apps are on about 70% of the screen, on right side (on ca. 30% of the screen) you see information for clock, weather, musik etc., but I want it like carplay, one hole screen with apps etc., do you know how can I do that? Thank you.
sinus cosinus if your module is always 70% even from the start then it’s your box but when your connected on android auto and it’s only 70% then check settings in the module itself.
sinus cosinus oh maybe I understand, I have no idea how to change that! I’d look up how to change different versions of android auto.
OK I found out it has to do with android itself (for many people it works with developement modus of androit auto and then set the video resolution up to 1080p, but this also does not work for me, i will contact the support), nice thing is that with my Xiaomi Mi 9t pro also android auto work wireless, thats very cool :)
The idrive can cable, what i should i do with it ?
ua-cam.com/video/tn0tYF9GuVQ/v-deo.html
Watch this video for instructions!!
Hi maybe someone can help me? i get a full orange screen, then it just goes black. no idrive menu no carplaymenu. When i switch around the lvds cables (in-out) i get to see my idrive menu, but i dont get a carplay menu if i pres menu 3 sec. 535 gt 2010 cic ( hu looks the same as in this video).
@@coleyuhas7891 thankyou for the reply! i will try this.
Hola buenas, me va lento el menú del carplay, por que puede ser debido?? Gracias
Hey man hope you’re doing good. I have installed the Road Top device but I’m not really happy with it because:
*never connected by the cord is what I meant.
RAS hold the radio button down when you get to the aux page
My screen is red...??
Check the switches on your module, as well as the lvds in and out.
(Attention) If installing you must use the idrive controller cable and connection jumper in order for it to work properly ua-cam.com/video/tn0tYF9GuVQ/v-deo.html here’s a video with a schematic!!!!!
(Black screen issue) contacted the company and they said that both I-drives use the harness the big one and the small connection, so I’ll go back into my system and try to connect that harness.
RAS My screen blacks out for longer like 15 seconds ds
Cole Yuhas Oh like completely blacked out and takes ages to come back on? Mine was doing that too. In that case maybe the harness might help! It hasn’t happened to me since I installed the harness but this is what is still happening to the screen randomly.
horrible music, why????
You’re totally right, won’t do that again
