Love it! You had me laughing, bro. We’ve all had days like this...but seldom do we see a video that shows the true trials of a fly fisherman. Thanks for the real deal!
Haha, you gotta roll with it aye bro!! It got to the point where it was just laughable. Glad it made you smile dude👊
Well, this is a little late, but the McCloud River Rainbow trout were planted in New Zealand during the 1880s. The McCloud River is in Northern California and is a tributary of the Sacramento River. These fish evolved in an arid region above big waterfalls which prevented them from becoming anadromous…
Thanks for the info Bill🤙
Crazy that they ended up here!
Dude when your fly real came apart I hollered !! Holy shit ! And scared my wife hafe to death lol !!! Absolutely love your videos bro keep up the awesome work !!!!
Haha, that’s funny dude. Nice one, thanks for watching man🤙
Awesome video, biggest loser is a title better used for spin fishing videos tho
Ohhhh SN-AP!!! Good one😂
Best Video ever!
Reality......sometimes it works, sometimes shit happens.....never i feel in a Video the same as the bro....Thanks for fantastic pictures
Thanks man, the beauty of fishing is that you will never have it totally worked out!
Stacked up like cord wood in that seam. So fun
after the 4th loss surely somewhere in the dark dungeon depths of your mind you must have thought...."....next time - barbed hooks for sure"
Haha. Nope, never. Plus I don’t believe a barb helps with a hook up rate. It’s either a solid hook hold or it isn’t....period.
I know from my days using salmon eggs as a kid that the bead size is close to authentic, but after all that frustration, and me being of Irish descent and having a short fuse, I'd either go with a hook with a bigger gap or smaller beads, next time I hit the vice. But, really, just matching your bad days would keep me stoked for weeks!
Don’t really have that problem any more since I changed to clear-drift eggs - was a weird day but funny all the same!
Great video! Twenty some hookups of major fish. Nice work.
Thanks man🤙
Dang bro those were some nice bows looked like a tough but fun day loved it Loved 👍🤜🤛
Cheers man, appreciate it! Thanks for watching🤙
I’ll echo another poster who said thank you for keeping it real. Love the videos as always. What’s the song at 12:00? I’m a big music collector so this channel has two of my three major vices haha
I’ll check and let you know bro
Seeing you guys F...up a few gives us mere mortals a little hope. Sh.t does happen. Mike
It happens heaps!!! 😄
Look at it this way: You're well on your way to becoming a 'catch and release' mystic...
Really enjoying your vids.
I was def on 🔥 that day!!
Thanks for watching man👍
Technically speaking, there are two different, genetically distinct types of McCloud River rainbow trout. Trout that lived below the Middle Falls of the McCloud River, an impassable fish barrier, are genetically classified as coastal rainbows. For thousands of years they have been subjected to genetic drift from other populations of rainbows in the form of steelhead. Before Shasta and McCloud dams were built in 1945 and 1965, respectively, steelhead from as far south as the Central Valley and as far north as the Columbia River migrated up the McCloud River. These rainbows share a genetic resemblance to all coastal rainbows and steelhead that have access to the ocean throughout California.
The trout from above the impassable Middle Falls of the McCloud River have been genetically isolated for thousands of years and have evolved into their own distinct fish know as McCloud River redband trout. They are thought to be one of the oldest populations of rainbow trout, called the proto rainbow by some fish biologists. Historically, the range for these unique fish was the upper reaches of the McCloud River system and a few small creeks along the east flanks of Mount Shasta, where the fish have remained isolated for centuries.
Thanks heaps for all that detail and info. Super interesting stuff!
You are very welcome@@TrippinOnTrout
Every time you lose a fish i hear dj khaleds voice in my head: Another one 🤣 Cheers mate
Haha, all good bud🤙
Awesome again, happy new year to all in N.Z
Happy new year mate!
Another great video - the highlight of the week. Nice to know even the experts have off days. A “Friday filler” suggestion - glo bugs. Cheers mate
Thanks man, GLO bugs on the list... good one
Was using split shot 60 years ago when it was definite no no to other fly fisherman, but could catch fish when it got tough and they couldn't..
where are the fresh coming from -- are they lake runs or from the sea? One day I have to book atrip down there.. love your shows
Yes the California steel head are the rainbow trout that you and I have in Australia and nz.
Jack from crazy trout hunterz awesome work bro!
Thanks for that bro, nice one. It’s crazy to think that we are fishing for steelhead originally from
The States aye!!
Hey I'm in norcal and yes they cam from California in 1883 or 1884. I am 99.9% positive some your trout came from the Mccloud river! I just wonder how humans got them there so long ago? Really enjoy the videos, it's awesome to see the huge fish!
Bro, never seen you lose so many fish in one trip! They had your number today! That fight at 12:41 was awesome! He went way down stream awesome fight!!!! Great video again.....
I know right! I think that’s a new record for me😂
I know right! I think that’s a new record for me😂
Gradually getting through all your footage, amazing fishing and skill
Super fun video!!! I can remember a time on a tiny little stream in British Columbia when every time I put my fly on the water I caught a fish. Of course, these fish were not much bigger than sardines, but they were fun. Thanks for the joy.
Was a crazy good day out yes!!
Hahaha... Shit happens my friend, neither day is the same like the past or the next!! :-)
Hey brother, how are you? How does one know when the fish are starting to push Into the tribs for the spawn? And how far up from any lake should I go up the trib? And yeah they are from California
Just head to the river and look. You’ll see em!
Cool vid, sucks the number that got away, but geez heaps of fish about! I’d be keen to see how you tie your otter’s egg. Chur Bro :)
Shit happens aye bro 😄
Watch tomorrow’s Filler for the egg tie...😉
AWESOME it is !
Nice one Alex. I like when you and Gareth leave in the missed or lost fish. It feels more relatable than just perfect days. Have a good one.
How do you like that reel, I was thinking about getting their cheap model?
Cheers bro, I wanna keep it real and no one catches every fish!!
Love that reel too, so light and really well made. It only came apart becoz I hadn’t kept an eye on it and made sure it wasn’t coming loose for weeks!
Le plaisir de voir tes vidéos et hop c'est une véritable dose de chimio merci.
FABULOUS!
Chur bro
i actually think it was a great day of fishing and overcomming obsticles is all part of the fun. cheers mate
Always a good time on the river!
There is nothing better then chasing one down like that. At the time you say no no no dont go down there but in youre head youre like oh hell ya
Yeah bro, gets the heart pumping aye👊
ALEX BRO don*t let the fish get to far below ya.. they most of time will pot off & line tight to the fish all the time... BOB..
That's kind of what happens with big Trout though, my biggest fish took me way down stream and then started bursting straight up again and I had to run as fast as I could just to keep the tension on... then it went back down further than it had even first gone and we netted it... Oh, and before that we were fighting it in the pool we had hooked it in for about 10 minutes before it started running down... 9 pound Brown.
WTF? Your either doing a fantastic job of editing or your fishing a hatchery. You called the bottom fly a glow bug but it looked solid to me are you using beads? Can you use beads?
I just timed it right that day bro. Fresh fish that had pushed in with the rain. There really was THAT many fish in there! That GLO Bug is an otters egg pattern - squishy orange ball. Don’t think you can use beads here..
Ha ha Josh. Funny stuff. You ever fish NZ? Guessing not as the fishing can be downright insane. Hatchery . . . ha ha
lot of fush up the creek this day, good to hear all the exspleetives! real tv
Yeah I dropped a few more F bombs than usual that day 😐
Glad I'm not the only one with days like this!! Great videos man!
Happens to everyone bro!! Chur
Setup!!! Please!!
if you're a loser... wooow! :)
awesome video!
Cheese bro🤙
Great vid mate! Down in Turangi this weekend, hopefully there’s still some fish around
Cheers Alan, after all this rain there will tons around!
Hope you are right! Can’t wait to get down there
what combo do you use to fish in that river?
I think that was a 6 weight, floating line and nautilus reel from memory
Great video Alex cant wait till Friday
Cheers bruv. Just finishing editing it now
I've been looking at the information online about where the New Zealand rainbow trout came from and apart from knowing they came from the West Coast there is little information, apart from some released in Auckland which came from Sanoma Creek in California (according to Fishingmag.co.nz). As none of the rainbows in NZ run to sea it is hard to think that they came from a steelhead strain. I've lost 19 fish in a row, you did far too well to be hard on yourself about it.
Apparently Californian steel head strain
The fish in Taupo treat the lake as their ocean and act exactly the same as their sea run cousins
Set the hook, set the hook, set the hook, set the hook, 5 times, land more fish...
With all the fish you lost , you have nothing to lose try setting the hook.
Which of the flies?
Hey man, dont take this to heart but of you could try and show the indicator go down when you get your fish that would be great. Either way man you still alg to watch
I saw the indi go down on most of those eats.
@@DrFish71 ahh must be my eyes then. Cheers
@@jacopgame3068 it's a white puffy thing (you knew that, tho), takes a while to train the eye on it when he's got the chest GoPro camera working and doing the herky jerky. My wife can't watch this kind of vid/movie 'cause she gets motion sickness! Luckily, no me.
