Love the 3rd person view. As a guy who trys to film himself fishing it is really difficult to balance filming and actually fishing. Keep it up! Love your videos
Awesome thanks for letting me know. It's definitely hard finding a balance, especially when the fishing is good. I've been working on getting a system that helps me focus on fishing while getting good angles and it looks like the 360 cam (One X2) is going to do the trick. Keep an eye on the next few videos and let me know what you think.
Another great video Johan, I enjoy the third party view even if its a little jerky. River here was around 120 cumecs and has risen to nearly 200 overnight so I am just going to have to hang out for a bit longer
Thanks for the feedback Neil, much appreciated. The sun is finally shine here in Auckland so hopefully it makes it's way down soon. I'm think Wednesday might be the day for a start to the new season. Hope you get out soon. Tight lines
Great video Johan. I saw my car in the carpark as you pulled up haha. I thought I had the river all to myself before I bumped into you and some others. I hooked a beautiful trout not long after I saw you, fish of a lifetime for me, then it dropped the hook as I was about to net it. gutted
Great to have met you. The river was surprisingly quiet that day. The weather must have scared everyone off. Better for us. Hope you get back there for that trout, they will still be around for a while. Should be good once it clears a bit from this rain. Tight lines.
Yes it was, I was there at 6 and no cars. unlike you I stayed the night on Monday hoping that the rivers might have been OK the following morning. let's just say it was an early trip back to Palmy in the morning. I see the rivers are blown out again this weekend but hoping to find some fishable back country water tomorrow. Tight lines
Great morning session on the river! I know how hard it is to film and get all that action in. You do a great job! The 360 camera doesn't need to be too far from you to get the third person view. Keep it short, like less than 300mm above your head and as up-right as possible. The angle is what makes it appear to sway.
Thanks Eric, appreciate the tip. Still working out the new camera. I'll definitely remember to drop it lower and I'm also going to make sure the backpack is full and everything strapped tight. It's an interesting angle and will mix in nice with what I do. I do find it even more useful on a tripod as I never go out of frame. And the potential for overhead shots really excites me. Thanks for giving me the 360 idea. I first saw it with you.
Excellent video. I was with you all the way. Loved the angles, the commentary. Thank goodness no music! What would I have liked to see or know more of? Understand how you chose the pools to fish. I would like to have seen all be it very briefly your fly selection and dropper lengths. I loved seeing the struggles with the line around your real tangled up as we all experience from time to time. Best fishing video I have seen for a long time. As a fisherman myself, I am always trying to learn from others. Look forward to the next video.
Awesome, thanks James, really appreciate the feedback. I must say this video I was a bit pressed for time but I do try to cover a little bit of info normally so if you haven't seen this one: ua-cam.com/video/DvlMIxwXOUA/v-deo.html I cover the whole leader setup there and in this one: ua-cam.com/video/M9TxGUIGoPQ/v-deo.html you will see my winter fly box briefly at the start. Thanks again for the feedback. It's the only way I can improve my videos and know what you would like to see so please keep it coming. Tight lines and thanks for watching
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing I know how important constructive feedback is. I too produce videos, it does amaze me how often people don't give feed back to help me produce what they want. Feed back as you say helps in the continuous evolution of videos. I will watch the two links you have sent you. Overall your videos are some of the best fishing videos I have watched. Keep up the good work.
@@JamesRattray thank you very much for the kind words. I'll keep working to try and keep the quality up and keep improving. Going to try and film tomorrow even though the weather for the opening of our summer season has been terrible. Hopefully I'll get some good footage and an interesting story at least.
Nice video Johan. I really liked the drone shots and the 3rd person view. How does that work? Do you have the drone behind you or some extension I couldn't see?
Great, appreciate the feedback. The 3rd person view is a 360 camera on a selfie stick attached to my backpack. It's a lot of extra work asI need to use software to reframe each clip before I use it but it does mean whatever I do with the camera it sees everything which is very handy because I can't walk out of frame anymore. I have some interesting ideas with it for the new season so keep an eye out for the results. Tight lines
Hi Johan, well worth the walk with some very nice fishing and loved your drone coverage. I am presuming that it was before the big rains? Hate see what the river you were fishing looks like now after the last big flood. But, the trout will be there somewhere. Steelheads are tough fish! Cheers mate. Harera.
Yes, it was way back on the 19th. Those rivers have seen a lot of water this year. I wonder how that affects spawning success. Hopefully all good. It's been a marvelous season. Now for the backcountry if I can find a clear river by the end of the week.
Thanks mate, they worked out better than I expected on the day. Gotta get you out for a trout or two this season. I recon you will love wading the lake flats for big browns. Just like stalking bones
Haha yeah these winter fisheries are a bit different but you have those stunning clear rivers with sight fishing, can't wait to get back down south for that.
Thanks for the feedback Nick, that's good to know. I thought similar but might still use it sparingly from time to time if I don't have shore access for a tripod.
Thanks Matt, appreciate the feedback. I was a bit pressed for time in this one so skipped that part. Apologies. Yes the New Zealand rainbows are decents of steelhead I believe but don't have access to the sea but a big lake instead. But the behavior is pretty much the same, they live and grow big in the lake and then run up the tributaries to go and spawn in the headwaters. It's an interesting fishery.

Excellent, there will be more coming. I have some interesting ideas if I can find opportunities to execute them
Constantly great clips Johan. Good work.
Thanks Chris, much appreciated.
Awesome Johan - definitely like that 3rd person view. I wondered at the start whether it was Pawel running behind you holding the camera up :)
Haha yeah he normally does but now I will be able to let him fish too 😄

Nice work mate. Meet you in the Carpark that same wet morning and also had a great day. Keep up the good work and loved the new angles! Johnny.

Amazing what you can record alone!!!!
Thanks, it came out nice in the end I think.
On your second fish did you see the two fish up right up to where you was standing. Around the 3min 40 mark in video
I did notice that while editing but not on the day, was too focused on casting up I think but there was also fair bit of glare.
Absolutely awesome drone footage….keep up the great work Johan!
Thanks, will do! Hopefully get some good shots with the new season.
I think you also emailed me? I responded this morning so chat soon. Tight lines.
Looks like the TT , if so its my fav river
It's a sweet river the TT
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing The best if you know where to go
@Helmut1610 yup
Great drone shots m8.

You are awesome!!!
Thank you 😊
Where is this? Nice vid. Especially with the drone involved.
Thank you, this is New Zealand's North Island in the Taupo region winter fishery.
This is awesome footage!! Where abouts in NZ is this?
One of the Lake Taupo tributaries in winter. Great fishing during the runs last season
That is certainly a healthy fishery! Slightly less of a population here in the top of the south!
Haha yeah these winter fisheries are a bit different but you have those stunning clear rivers with sight fishing, can't wait to get back down south for that.
nice video good luck what kind of drone are you doing the video with?
Thank you. I'm using a DJI Mini 2. Great little drone and easy to carry. The mini 3 pro would be even better
Man I would love to fish that river. Are you guys in New Zealand?
Yes indeed. Awesome place to live for fly fishing
Love those drone hook ups man ❤
Hope I can get some dry fly eats with the drone this summer
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing that would be awesome if you did!
What is the name of this river?
I don't name rivers on social media sorry but it's in the Taupo region in NZ.
The third party view is a bit jerky if the technology gets better you can use it. Nice fishing
Thanks for the feedback Nick, that's good to know. I thought similar but might still use it sparingly from time to time if I don't have shore access for a tripod.
can you show the fishing flies you use

what bait did you use?😄
🤣 cleardrift egg fly and a heavy nymph combo to get it down

I just want to tell you that those are steelhead just look at the markings
