To clean the chain on a converted Harley, can you get around the primary cover to clean the front sprocket or would you have to go through that ball ache with the clutch every time?
CosmoxYRik nope gotta pull primary cover, that’s why I would never do this conversion.the belt is quieter and needs no maintenance other than occasional adjustment
All you have to do is keep your chain clean. People act like that so tough to stay on top of lol. It's nice to be able to pack a chain even if something happens it can be fixed. Your belt is leaving you where you sit if it breaks. Plus you can play with gearing easily.
Look after your chain and no need to clean front sprocket unless your taking your Dyna through the bush lol. Chain out preforms the belt in every aspect anyone who says other wise has no experience with a chain driven Harley. If stunting is your forte, chain all day 👌
If you don't have an impact gun and can't get the sprocket nut off, get a center punch and make a spot near where two flats of the nut meet. Do that spot a little nearer the edge of the nut than the threads.... then carefully drill the spot - with a small bit - until the nut is almost drilled through into the pulley. Then drill it with bigger bits until the hole is enlarged enough to be just breaking out the side of the flats. Then use a cold chisel in that hole and hit it sharply as if to loosen the nut - the nut will fracture down by the threads and you can get it off. You will need a new nut, but it is always a good idea to use new nuts anyway !
great video, great job explaining things. One note since you mention the older dyna's , you may need a rear sprocket spacer. I know my 01 calls for a .50 spacer. super cheap part to get
when installing the chain drive do you need to have someone press the rear break down while you tighten the rear tire / axle to be sure the brake caliper is aligned properly with the rotor?
I want to hurry up and do this but I want to get my long trip to Canada figured out first, also coming to visit you guys again but idk about that new exhaust law... I'll stop by again in July though! I'll be in town for a show
How many miles do you get on the chain ? I am still belt driven now. My vtwin sport bikes the chain would only last 8-10k miles, just a little longer than the rear tire
A quality 530 X-ring chain with steel sprockets should last you in excess of 20k miles. OEM chains are notoriously cheap and don't last like you mentioned
I have been thinking about doing this to my 2010 Dyna. One Question, do you have a link for the 2 1/4" Socket? Everything that I have seen on line looks awful! Thanks!
Samo Lagano Im pretty sure it’s mostly done for low end performance a lot of guys are doing wheelies and stunts on dynas these days and the belt will most likely not hold up when putting that much instant power to it in order to pull up a wheelie. It also looks cooler tho.
admittedly i am not a dyna bro.. but I have ridden high performance sport bikes and harley's.. one must ask...... what is the benefit to this conversion?
My main reason for doing this is so I can fix it on the side of the road if I need to. Having a belt you are getting a tow and may be stuck for a couple days if its Saturday afternoon cause most shops are closed on Sunday Monday and some on Tuesday!
Gorilla HD I’m trying to get my 2000 fxdx running again this is definitely on my todo list after I get her up and running again. If only parts were free.
That seems like a lot of work and expense for no real advantage. I like that Harley went to belt drives over chain, so I don't hear the chain. I broke chains when I had chain drives. I've never broken a belt.
You must had been using cheap chains , I got sick of breaking drive belts and went to a chain years ago and never looked back , I'm running a rk pro chain on my electra glide best move ever .

@@cmonster6 +1, and with chain every plase is covered with chain greace and chain wax sucks. Never do that swap. IMHO

what gearing is this one?
What size chain? Did you use steel sprockets?

Looks like my winter project on my wheele popping WIDE Glide.
do you guys put the belt/chain guard back on or is it safe without the guard on to ride?
Keeps road dirt off the chain and passenger toes out of harms way. . Ever find one?

When did Edward Norton start working on Harley's?
Is this the same procedure for the fxdli 2006 dyna lowrider ? And where can i get that big socket from my brother
Isn't the chain break and chain rivet tool the same thing?
when installing the chain drive do you need to have someone press the rear break down while you tighten the rear tire / axle to be sure the brake caliper is aligned properly with the rotor?
Yall still open or no??
Which way does the rear sprocket get mounted...groove out or groove against hub?
Yeah that’s what I need to know too... I got the chrome sprocket and the spacer won’t fit in it
You guys saved my ass yet again! Thank you for the vid
You say 100ft lb torque on main shaft then break lose and go 35ftlb?
The best brand chain kit?
I've been trying so much to remove that pulley nut, and it just doesn't come off! any recommendations?
Red loc tite everything?
Pros n cons with that conversion? What’s the maintenance on that setup look like. Is it more reliable than the belt?
If you ride gravel roads the belt will leave the chat, short order. Chain does need some cleaning and is definitely noisy compared to the belt.
I want to hurry up and do this but I want to get my long trip to Canada figured out first, also coming to visit you guys again but idk about that new exhaust law... I'll stop by again in July though! I'll be in town for a show
Motorcycles are exempt from CA exhaust law limiting db and modifications. All good bro.
You'll be good. They've mellowed out on it quite a bit honestly. Seems to be back how it was at this point!

is this set up the same ratio as the belt drive
About how much should a job like this cost? I’m in FL so I can’t drop it off in CA lol
What’s the foot lbs on that air drill
Did you guys need to replace the gaskets? I know the thought is you should but do you need too
Anthony Forman when in doubt swap the old gasket out.
Do you got a tool list
With this mod , do u have to correct the Speedo?
depends on how much of a change you make. it can easily be corrected on a dyno if you were looking to get it back to exact.
I have been thinking about doing this to my 2010 Dyna. One Question, do you have a link for the 2 1/4" Socket? Everything that I have seen on line looks awful! Thanks!
jims tools has a nice one
Is there a break in period where I gotta be gentle on it? Asking for a friend.
Nope! Slap er on and handle the biz!

Great video. Where do I get that manson shirt?
That came from a buddies company out of Portland. Not sure if they're still around...
Help your buddy out and drop a name man I need that shirt lol
How many links is the chain?
You do a chainconversion Because power is better transfered to the rearwheel than with a belt? Im curious, Nice vid!
Samo Lagano Im pretty sure it’s mostly done for low end performance a lot of guys are doing wheelies and stunts on dynas these days and the belt will most likely not hold up when putting that much instant power to it in order to pull up a wheelie. It also looks cooler tho.
chain most efficient shaft second belt is least efficient that is fact not a trendy opinion. d.s.
David Sundquist I’ve just heard the belt is smoother cause it has a little more give and has more room for error but also weaker than a chain.
@@davidsundquist1845 wrong. Shaft drive is the worst at putting power to the rear wheel. Dummy
What is the benifit of doing this?
More reliable and handle way more power

Great video but is sooooo much work . Stay blessed guys .
which loctite did you use on the adjusters? when I torque mine to the spec in the manual it tightens my chain too much.
Anyone happen to know what bars this bike had?
HD chiseled bars
