Chains are the way to go unless your lazy and don’t want to maintain it, most Harley guys and girls just want to wash wax and go, but the chain is so much better
Short answer: Hell yeah! Longer one: Maintenance is not that bad and the main benefit for me is longer shifts. It gives me 5/10 more miles on 5th gear over belt with the same RPMs, so thats engine saving, highway speed to keep up with my brothers, rather than get a 6 speed gearbox. My chain equipped bike is a ‘99 FXR2 CVO. My 4th FXR so far, so I notice the difference! Killer looks, obviously! 🤘😎⚡️
Thank you for covering this topic. Comes down to looking fly and handling a lot of power vs low maintenance. How do they feel different while riding?
To me, it feels slightly more responsive 🗽⚡️
I did it on my Dyna, the parts was a few hundred bucks and it was a big job.. as in I wouldn’t wanna pay a shop to do it $$$$$$. It looked badass! I never ran the chain guard like you, so chain lube would get all over the place. In retrospect I would’ve ran the chain guard. I speculate that your sprocket bolts broke because maybe the shop used the same ones from the belt sprocket? They’re supposed to put new ones on, that’s why I like doing these jobs myself. I got my new bike here, its just an M8 softail and I would not do the chain swap again. But this conversion is totally at home on a Dyna, it just goes with the rest of the bike!
Nah they were new sprockets, they just got super worn over time - Also I don't run the chain guard either, so definitely gets messy!
When I lube my chain I lay newspaper on the ground under the chain and jack up the back end, slowly turn the rear wheel and only spray the inside of the chain links so as it’s running it has to throw the lube out through the chain. Any lube you put on the outside of the chain will only fling off onto your bike, clothes and luggage.
Definitely looks dope for sure. The sleek look of the belt just does it for me. Im only making 130 hp 135 tq. But it’s mostly highway. I don’t really stunt either.
So you run belt?
@@FXDLSBrooklyn yes sir
Awsome review. Question though, I own a 20 m8 softail low rider s, and recently I discovered rear pulley has slight bent on back side of the ring which stamped back of the pulley during my maintenance schedule from HD dealer. The dealer recommended replacing a pulley at this point in phase. Rather than spending money to replace OEM pulley, I am thinking about I may do the chain conversion. You mentioned the cleaning part of the chain is a bit crazy n dirty. However, I also ride with low rider ST bags. Would the chain grease spray out all over my bags when the bike in motion n riding in high speed?
The mod I’ve been holding off on for the simple fact that you have to maintain a chain.
Absolutely - Honestly these days I question if it's worth it!
I did exactly the same thing to my (brand new oem) sprocket bolts when I did my conversion. Sheared all 5 at around 2k miles. New wheel hub, spacer and sprocket plus some fresh arp hardware later and haven’t had a problem since. Id recommend going with arp’s off the bat.
They couldn't have been grade number 8 Bolt s.?
@@rebeltz2010 those will work as well, just be sure to install and torque them properly.
@@Shatterproof315plus red loctite. Will work
I run a chain on my FXR and the stock belt on my Dyna. The way I ride now they both work fine. Chain looks cooler.
On my DX I run belt with no plans of changing that 🗽⚡️
Aarp bolts 😂. senior citizen bolts ftw
😎
It has its advantages and the cool factor 🔥🔥🇺🇸
For sure! 🗽⚡️
What kit would you get?
These days? I've heard good things about the one Bung King offers
Shaft for me
hate the maintenance
Previous bike was shaft driven now got a chain
Next one gotta be shaft again
Don't see shaft much 🗽⚡️
Chains got the looks but I just can't be bothered to do chain maintenance anymore. Belts for life 👊
This is reasonable 🗽⚡️
@@FXDLSBrooklyn
What's the cost on average to do the conversion professional at a shop or dealer?
Build drives have their advantages, but are prone to snapping anytime are super pain to replace, especially on ultras, don't ask me how I know LoL
@@alexander61516I brought a kit from America's, Vulcan NH, cost me $900 Australian, that's with frieght, super quality, but no master link ,easy to fit, be a lot cheaper there but, make sure you fit it correctly for the exact model and year cheers from Ozzz
Hey Bro, how could you post a video on Chain adjusment for that bike.
Man I've been meaning to do one!
@FXDLSBrooklyn please do i am so lost just looking at the bolts that take alen keys on ends.
Didn’t you also do a video on why you haven’t switched to a bagger bike like a street glide or road glide?
Yep, couple of them 🗽⚡️
Unless you are up for wheelies (which would damage the Harley before its time) who wants to deal with shorter life and maintainance
This is a reasonable stance on the subject 🗽⚡️
That bike is a oxymoron, the model is LOW RIDER and it's lifted like a dirt bike
lol - You're not wrong
*DAYUM SO MANY VIDEOS WHAT IS HAPPENING*
feel like I've seen this before, maybe was dropped as a Patreon clip
Grinding hard 🗽⚡️
@@FXDLSBrooklyn and YT loved that
Um that first scene has a big ole puddle under your rear tire? And your shock looked blown? Are you seriously getting lube thrown that badly? My dirtbikes that I lube every ride don't even throw that much oil on the bikes.
It's like on my sprockets.. front chain guard and rim if I over do it. I wouldn't use whatever your using if its that messy.
Find something better. Are you running a lube or wax? I perfure wax. But I don't have a chain on my dyna. I'm planning on it eventually thoe.
Rear shocks were definitely smoked - Good eye - As for the puddle, not from me - I used to run wax in the beginning, lube now
Nope. Totally not worth it.
I think if you're not going big in terms of motor work or stunting, I would agree 🏁 ⚡️
The more you mess with it, the messier it gets. Chains stretch, are filthy and harder on driveline.
All my bikes after this are belt lol
Harley build them right in the first place : )
