Finally a video that is straight to the point! This is the kinda of quality we need more of. Not this click bait, self-promo greed-bags. I'm a loyal fan forever!
I just bought a Push 2, and although I know music from a DJ perspective, I'm not trained in music theory, and can't play any instruments. While trying to understand just what the hell was going on with the Push grid, I found this video. The first thing I noticed was how much your voice reminds me of Nurse Hearse from a bunch of songs by The Detroit Grand Poobahs. Then I realised I'd seen your review videos for the APC 40 and the Push, amongst other things. That aside, yours is the clearest and most easily understandable explanation so far. I'm at the start of a massive learning curve, and it's people like you who help me keep trying. Thank you for your time and effort. Subscribed and watching.
What you mention at 3:30 only applies in chromatic mode where every note is spaced evenly. For example, if your Push is set to Major mode, the C Major shape (1-3-5) played 2 spots to the right ends up being an E minor, not an E Major. Good video, regardless.
+lextexrex Yes, it will be a different chord in a different scale, but the point is, it's the same exact shape no matter what...well unless you get a scale with 5 or 6 notes per scale, but even then, you can still try the same shapes :)
not that you were bad before St. Joe but your tutorials have gotten that much better. would love to see you mess with the new iMaschine2 app and record that stuff in thru an aux cable (or a better way if there's another one)!
Great video man. Keep them coming. Only I would suggest shooting the vids in darker light. As I am badly colour blind, I can't see the root notes because it's too bright.
+Ben Breslin Thanks for watching! Sorry man, lighting is always hard when dealing with LEDs like this, also trying to balance the screen against the pads, etc...trust me, it's been a challenge to say the least :)
Great video tutorial! Novice question, how did you get Push to display Minor, Major, Dorian, etc? Is it in the Ableton Live settings? Thank you in advance.
Not something I've looked into personally (still building up my knowledge of theory in general, I typically look up chords then try to figure them out on Push) but I'm sure you can.
Thanks for sharing, bro! Is there anything stopping one from learning the chords in chromatic? You mentioned that you're "in key". Doesn't that limit the number of chords we can actually make?
Thanks for watching man! Nah it was just a site I had found at the time. I'm sure there are other sites out there, really anything with guitar tabs or chords should work. Or any other resource that shows chords in a number format like this.
Cool, thanks my friend! I just found a bunch of charts on google images btw...for anyone that's interested, just type 'Chord Formula' charts, and search google images. Thanks again for the helpful tutorial man!
The problem i have with this and please correct me if I'm wrong. All the chords your playing are just variations of the CHORD C, so your playing inversions of C and C suspended and so on. Being in the key of C means i should be able to play the chords C, Dminor,Eminor and so on but it doesn't look like the push is able to do that. Also when recording a C triad from the push into ableton does it record each note or would it just be recorded as one note
You can take it out of "in key" mode, which opens up all of the other notes not in key, they will not be lit up like all the pads are when in key, you can also change keys and scales, no matter what you change to, you can still use the same exact shapes in various keys and scales, rather you confine it to the specific key or if you open it up to include notes not in the same scale/key.
theclinkmusic that's not true. They arent variations of the C chord once you move the pattern off of the root note. In "in key" mode you have access to every chord in that key. Think of it this way, in C major and in "in key" mode it's like having only the white keys on piano. You can play every chord in C major with those notes ;)
Does the push come with these chords or these are played from a vst? If not how do i put them in to be played by pad and chords like this? I thought push was a controller. Ever since i watched the "Ableton Push Jazz Piano Solo" video i been wondering this
I'm not sure what you mean by does it come with the chords? I'm playing the chords manually by playing different notes at the same time. If you're asking about the actual instrument sounds then you can use any sounds you have loaded in Ableton, including vst plugins and libraries, Ableton also comes with a bunch of sounds itself depending on which version you get.
Cool, not really about mimicking a guitar completely for me (even though that's how they laid it out) but being able to hack out some melodies using guitar tabs/numbers is cool.
+Diego Oliveras You can also put Push in chromatic mode, which will show the black notes, not just what's "in key" then you can play flat/sharp notes :)
+Diego Oliveras If you need dominant seventh you can either switch to mixolydian scale, and then the seventh note will be b7, or you can play a chord from the fifth note in the scale, and it will automatically be dominant.
Good video! Needed it. Some people are dense. People; rewatch the video- twice!- listen to the point he’s making in the entirety before you say he is wrong. That split second you took to light your cigarette just confused you.

Man , this has been around 7 years 🥴 best Push tutorial. Hands down! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
True and you can watch piano tutorials on UA-cam with people who use the number system, apply that to push and get really good at chord progressions
+OG Jawdinz Yes indeed!

Thanks for watching! I'm the same as you, not a DJ, but not trained in theory once this made sense to me it was like OH! I had to share lol.
One of the most useful videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. Really good!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome!! Looking at it with the numbers system really makes it easy. Thanks for the video
+Uprightest Thanks for watching bro!

after that somebody got to shout or talking with the log
I noticed that too!
Brilliant tutorial. Thanks a lot

+azfiu Thanks! I totally understand what you mean lol, no offense taken, as with all things the more you do it the better you get :)

Thumbs up, bro! Simple, but useful tricks
Thanks for watching!
You can play any of the following chords based on a major key...
M7
m7
susb9
M7(#11)
7
m7(b13)
m7(b5)
Cool, thanks for watching.
That was an amazing tip. Thanks for the info.

Do you think you could do a review of NI's new Komplete Kontrol 88 Keys Midi Controller?
Nice Video, thanks and greetings from Germany.
+Tobias Langen Not sure if I will be getting my hands on that.
So dope... this is why push is awesome
Thanks for watching fam!

+Romson Niega The scales button on Push allows you to change it.
Thank you so much for the quick reply and tip.
Cheers!
+Romson Niega No problem, glad to help!
Thanks for watching! @Keith Bissel
Thank you very much nice video.
+janschutz174 Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing ☺
Dope! Get em right fam! This is clutch!
+MSX Audio No doubt fam, thanks for the support!
could you explain why, if you have 8 keys going accross, how come you only count 3 accross and then going up to the next line to count the next 3???
It's the way the notes are laid out, they are not sequential straight across.
Good job
Thanks for watching!
what about doing some advanced harmonic stuff like playing the secondary dominants and borrowed chords ?
Not something I've looked into personally (still building up my knowledge of theory in general, I typically look up chords then try to figure them out on Push) but I'm sure you can.
i guess we'll have to play them in the chromatic mode since we aim on not staying in a single key anyway :)
No doubt, like I said, I'm sure you could do it!
Thanks for sharing!!!
+Reb Funk Thanks for watching!
Can I have one loop playing in a different key scale and then play the notes with a different root key?
+twist lick You mean if you recorded the loop as midi? Yes.
Thanks for watching @heez magnif
And this stands true for push 2 as well? :) thanks! great vid!
Yep, same layout :) Thanks for watching!
+SoundsAndGear.com great thanks mate x
No problem!
good job buddy. mind blown
+Vinod Avhad Thanks for watching, glad to help.
Thank You!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing, bro! Is there anything stopping one from learning the chords in chromatic? You mentioned that you're "in key". Doesn't that limit the number of chords we can actually make?
Nope, you could go full chromatic mode, with all the notes and still put together chords just using the proper note numbers.
SoundsAndGear.com
Thanks!
No problem!
Awesome!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great video dude!
The 'guitarchops101' link is dead btw...do you have another source where we can print the charts?
Thanks for watching man! Nah it was just a site I had found at the time. I'm sure there are other sites out there, really anything with guitar tabs or chords should work. Or any other resource that shows chords in a number format like this.

If it has note mode I imagine it would work similarly.

The spacing between the 1,4 and 5 on a guitar is different. Not a criticism. In order to mimic guitar, the notes need to spaced out across octaves.
Cool, not really about mimicking a guitar completely for me (even though that's how they laid it out) but being able to hack out some melodies using guitar tabs/numbers is cool.
TOP!!!

A dominant chord? How do you resolve that?

Every time he plays the major scale ending with B and not resolving to C leaves me sort of uncomfortable.
lol cool
