- "Whale Song" was one of the rare moments when Shirley Jones sang lead. Although the song was released as a promotional single (under the name Shirley Jones), that and the TV episode version were recorded only in mono. So we took the original recording from the episode and created several versions using different equalization for each. Then we mixed them together to create a full range stereo mix of the song.
This song broke my heart as a kid and it still does today.
Gorgeous song! Way ahead of it's time, even before or about the time John Denver came along in saving the whales, the sea, the earth. makes me cry! I remember always begging my mom to take us to Marineland of the Pacific, so I could walk where David walked, and see the magnificent animals, and slide the slide, in the same channel David did! the blue slide channel one on the right!!! wow....
Shirley had a beautiful voice I remember watching her in Oklahoma and Carousel
This would have been a successful song, very folk like. People forget she had an amazing voice.
And here comes the childhood memories! I remember this episode like I just saw it yesterday!
My Mama ( RIP) Use To Take Me To Marineland!
I Love Animals !
Marineland Has Been Closed For Years, But I Will Always Remember Going There!
👏🙏🕊️
The sounds of the whales ALWAYS bring a tear to my eye.
Simply beautiful no other words to describe it😊❤
Crying for freedom not to be captive and "entertainment" for people.
This was the only song in which Shirley went solo. They should have done that more often.
Agreed
"Ain't Love Easy" was another Shirley Jones solo. Another Great song.
She also sang My Best Girl to her mom and dad to get them to reconcile. Nice segment.
Clearly, "The Partridge Family" was an amazing hit TV series and the records were created to generate attention, and in reality, massive record sales. While Shirley Jones has an amazing singing voice, the audience was made of teenagers with their parents' wallets! 🎯 💯 ✔️
Not for me! I had to earn the money for every single and album I bought! My mom was very set on that... and TPF started when I was just 8 yrs old! But I did it! @@princescottygustafski5331
A gorgeous, timeless, and most heartfelt piece of music that will stand the time of the ages..
This song is beautiful but always makes me cry to think whales could be gone
This was during the big "save the whales" movement in the 70's. Because of attention to the issue through things like this, the movement was successful. Whales have made a very nice comeback in the four decades since. So don't be sad. :)
I always tear up whenever I hear this
Its wrong and sad that other countries kill them. To make perfumes. They are mamals. They like all creations of God, have a right to live.
Us humans are the worst species. We don't deserve to share this planet with these beautiful creatures, with all of God's creatures.
The first time I ever remember that the plight of these magnificent creatures of God was shown on a television program.
@@Norma_Ro How about you spare us the anti-human garbage. Human Beings are my species, and Im not taking the blame for something somebody else does. You're making a RIDICULOUS over generalization. No different than racism.
This should have been a single and on an album as Larry Uttal wanted. It was big mistake not to do that.
Shirley Jones should have had a lead on each album and been out in the mix more often.
Agreed
Producer Wes Farrell would not have it... he firmly believed it wouldn't appeal to the kids/teens who primarily bought Partridge Family records.
There was a single of this song produced only for promotions and sent to radio stations. It had a white Bell label with red letters and the artist was listed as Shirley Jones. It shows up on Ebay every once in a while. Wasn't recorded in stereo tho.
Larry Uttal was an executive with Bell Records(the Partridge Family's label).
I don't remember much of the show even though I watched all the episodes when it first aired but I do remember this song. Absolutely amazing.
Will always remember this one
One of the few times they got a full song into the half hour show.
Beautiful - and I'm automatically transported back to my lounge room after school, waiting for Mum to call out that tea's ready!
One of the most Beautiful Songs EVER recorded . Brilliant.
this was my fave episode at the time…loved that they did some topical episodes.
Classic partridge family
Whale 🐋🐳 s in general are super intelligent 🧠🤓 and beautiful 😍🤩🥳😋❤️!🎉! 2:03
Great song
Shirley Jones was a great actress. I saw Partridge Family when I was 2 years old.
This the greatest song I ever heard Kenneth Gentry
I love this song ❤️ Kenneth gentry
Ahead of its time , never forgot this song !
Such a beautiful song about whale's
Love you!!!! No matter what!!!! My favorite songs about you!!!! Class!!!! Thank you for everything!!!!!!
Love this one. God bless all of our marine life. Ever whete
Beautiful Song
Heres real music gorgeous
Did anyone else notice that the Whale featured in this video is Tilikum, the same featured in the documentary about the killing of an animal trainer? He has a bent fin, very recognizable. Years after this episode, I think it was 2010, he would kill his trainer. The film is called "Blackfish".
That is so sad. I didn't realize this was the same whale. The trainer's name was Dawn Brancheau.
Whales are not our friends. They are wild animals and don’t care about us. And they’re huge, so why would they? Orcas are especially vicious alpha predators. They should never have been in captivity, but, y’know… live n learn… or die, and wev…
I have heard of it but I can't watch it, animals shouldn't be kept in captivity and that's the lesson here but today we still aren't listening sad!
A beautiful song. The whales should never be kept in captivity!!
Once an album of whale sounds (songs) came out, EVERYONE was on the 'Save The Whale' bandwagon. I remember it well, but wasn't that concerned back in the day. Now, I'm a sucker for the whales. Every time I watch a documentary, I cry. It's always a sweet treat to hear Shirley sing. Thank you for posting!
So prolific..stirring...magical...and deep
Absolutely amazing
Beautiful
One of the few songs Shirley Jones sang in the Show.
Just discovered your channel and subbed. I love anything Partridge. Thanks!
Whales are also super important to us all under all circumstances!❤!😋🥳🤩😍🤓!😂🎉😅😊! 3:24
Beautiful!!
So beautiful
The song is stirring in more poignant today than in the 70s
So nice
Love this
Why wasn’t on record
It’s a lovely sea shanty
What the whale is saying is "get me the f*** out of this pen!"
Years before Free Willy
Just heard this song for the first time and I'm in my 60's. I fell asleep watching The Partridge Family (recovering from a cold, not from boredom) and heard this in my dreams. Woke up and wow, how beautiful! Who wrote it?
Deep!
Love this
I've always adored this song..I remember watching this episode as a little kid when it originally aired in 1971..Thank you for posting it here!..Is there anywhere I could find the promotional copy of this song?
Before Willy
I wish i could find this song on spoify or pandora
This was at Marineland.
Filmed at Marineland
Pretty ❤❤❤❤😂❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😢
Irregardless how neat whales are the most important thing about this show is it was into counterculture. Likethe pacifist movement. In reality Ho Chi Minh of North Vietnam was a mass-murderer of landlords in the 1950s. The US was right to fight him.
You meant "regardless" right?
Just watched this again it’s 2022 and sad to say the human race is even more viscous to these beautiful creatures especially in Japan , we’ve learned nothing after all these years …. Beautiful song , always makes me tear up 😞😞😞😞❤️❤️❤️❤️
Speak for yourself. You don't overgeneralize an entire species, especially when its your own.
They look like large dolphins
Wow. Too bad a bunch of kids went to Marine Land and Sea World cause of this.
You can tell the kids are not really singing. I recall Danny mentioning this episode in his book. Was this at SeaWorld? Pretty song.
@Emily Malden this episode of whale song was filmed at Marineland.
Filmed at Marineland of the Pacific, located in Palos Verdes ,Ca . Closed down in the late 80s
