I'M ON THE ROAD (stereo remix w David Cassidy), THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY
Collectors of Partridge Family rarities know that 'On The Road' appeared on the Partridge Family’s first album, along with a handful of other songs, without David Cassidy’s voice. Vocal arranger and singer Tom Bahler once said in an interview that there were half a dozen early songs that Cassidy wasn’t included on. The original vision for the Partridge band had been a choral sound more like the Cowsills, so when David was eventually hired as the lead singer (weeks after he was hired as an actor) producer Wes Farrell already had a few songs completed. Rather than go back and add David to the mix he decided to just use them as they were. David simply lip-synced to Ron Hicklin’s voice when those songs were played on an episode. On The Road appeared on both the album and the TV episode without David’s voice.
But as it turns out, there actually WAS a rare early vinyl demo of Cassidy singing On The Road which was never used. It was mixed very differently than the released version. We managed to acquire a copy of it, which was old and worn. The quality was so poor it was not very listenable as it was. But using a full spectrum analysis and a number of recording tools to clean up the distortion, we were able to isolate David's voice and blend it with the album version - and in the process turn it from mono recording into a full stereo song. (On The Road was the only track on the first album recorded in mono.)
This was one of the earliest songs David sang for the Partridge Family, weeks before the show even premiered. It remains a mystery why they never used this version. Though his vocal part is sparse I think you’ll agree, David shined from the very beginning. So for the first time in many years here is a clean, stereo recording of David Cassidy singing On The Road.

The Cowsills were the primary inspiration for the The Partridge Family TV show - a real family band which included their Mom. Unlike the show, which featured actors lip-synching to professional musicians, the Cowsills could really play and sing. As Shirley Jones once put it "They were the real deal".

"So . . . THIS is Muldoon's Point . . ." was a favorite line to repeat when I was a kid and we were presented with the obvious. This show could be gut-bustingly hilarious.
Ever since I watched it on Partridge Family many years ago, I have loved it sung by Shirley. She has a beautiful voice.
My favorite Partridge Family song 🎶🩷
This is my favorite PARTRIDGE FAMILY episode of them all. They were in so much trouble, that they didn't have time for a family dispute! I've always had a weakness for these episodes where a family (who has its share of conflicts) is under such stressful circumstances, that they don't have time a a dispute of their own!
Shirley Beautiful and so Talented. !!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Great to hear Davids voice. He should have been singing on this. He sings it fine. It is amazing what technology can do now.
SOOOO COOOL! I loved this show and music, and David when I was little whenthis came out! Kim
GOOD JOB!
I'm so happy to hear this song ❤
Why don't you bring the nice Raisin Lady in the nice control room and we'll make the nice record before this nice year is over,
Whatever happened to Mr partridge 😇
Smash Hit !!!
Dear Mr.Bonaduce, I recently viewed an interview you had with a young lady, and you were confused about a few melodies, one was by the group Whamm called "Careless Whisper",the other was about your theme song, which I consider this song,to be your theme song, one, because it actually mentions you by name, and two,it expresses the premise of the entire series,a working middle class family, that because of your tenacity, your family became the number one record in America, and in the top ten in other countries,We who actually witnessed this phenomenon, will always appreciate your tenacity for as long as we live,By His Grace,In Loving ❤️ Gratitude.
David Was Working That Guitar 🎸!
David Cassidy Was An O.G. He Grew Up During The Turbulent 1960's! He Sang Positive Song About Love, Family, Marriage, Loss & God! RIP Mr. Cassidy 🕊☀️👏🙏🏽
This is such a great clip, the absolute talent in acting really comes out. Brings back so many memories of those early 70's.
BEST song the Partridge family ever did Love this
Awesome song I was 11 years old when I first heard this in late 69
Thank you for your work. I love hearing David’s voice in this. It’s a beautiful song, but without his voice it just doesn’t sound like the Partridge Family.
What’s with the trigger happy pigs🐷
Wowza! Who wrote that one I wonder…
I can't imagine what today's young person will look back fondly on 50 years from now? The music? The TV shows? I just can't imagine....
Absolutely awesome my favorite song 😊
They show way too much of Shirley.
This song is actually quite complex. Check out the odd sounds in the bass part at the beginning of the chorus.
I was just sitting eating a bowl of cereal and this song popped into my head for no reason. Luckily I had my phone close by.
Poor Keith. That was too far from left field. The whole scene is priceless.
I wish they had put this on an album. I heard long ago that David held the rights to all the songs that never made it onto an album, such as this one, and never agreed to sell. Such a shame.
Absolutely my favorite musical family😊
Shirley wasnt singing much.
Absolutely awesome always amazing 😊
Great video!
I didn't know he sang this awesome song with his TV family. What a song makes me think of my Mother who unfortunately passed 2015. Rip Thanks David and the family. 😢
Shirley jones -mum here, is still with us
Didnt thelma from Dawn tony orlando and charlies angel cheryl ladd sing the actusl backup vocals
Those two little kids were so unnecessary! They should’ve made Danny twins. THAT would have been funny!
This is their best song right here
Was that Bobby' Sherman's song? David Cassidy took over the song 😮 awesome instrumental 👏
GOOD JOB!
I am pretty sure that Shirley Jones and Susan Day were NOT singing on the records . They DID get VERY close studio session back ups that have the same RANGE as Shirley and Susan . Very good match ups !!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
David says he was in the live audience at TCB with Supremes and Temptations
Shirley Jones is amazing....she looks like she loves singing this song!
Had a crush on Shirley Partridge...love the blonde short hair on her
Thank you for sharing this ☺️💙♉♎♋💙
Cool song 😎🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
I still cry listening to this.
2:07 I forgot this bridge in the song. Great song with great singing by David, Shirley and the Wrecking Crew.
The 70’s awesome time to grow up in this show was on Friday nights ABC the show was amazing music spectacular still sounds great today.
One of my old favorite tunes of my youth. David was a great singer. The show was fun to watch. Priceless memories I'll have for the remainder of my life.
