I'M ON THE ROAD (stereo remix w David Cassidy), THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY
Collectors of PF rarities know that On The Road appeared on the Partridge Family’s first album, along with a handful of other songs, without David Cassidy’s voice. Vocal arranger and singer Tom Bahler once said in an interview that there were half a dozen early songs that Cassidy wasn’t included on. The original vision for the Partridge band had been a choral sound more like the Cowsills, so when David was eventually hired as the lead singer (weeks after he was hired as an actor) producer Wes Farrell already had a few songs completed. Rather than go back and add David to the mix he decided to just use them as they were. David simply lip-synced to Ron Hicklin’s voice when those songs were played on an episode. On The Road appeared on both the album and the TV episode without David’s voice.
But in this case, it turns out that there actually WAS a rare early demo of Cassidy singing On The Road which we managed to acquire a vinyl copy of. Because the quality of the record was so poor it was not usable as such, and it required a full spectrum analysis and a number of unconventional recording tools to clean up the distortion, separate David’s voice and create multiple tracks for remixing. After some trial and error we were able to blend David’s voice with the album version - and in the process turn it from mono into a full stereo song. (On The Road was the only track on the first album recorded in mono.)
This was one of the earliest songs David sang for the Partridge Family, weeks before the show even premiered. It remains a mystery why they never used this version. Though his vocal part is sparse I think you’ll agree, David shined from the very beginning. So for the first time in many years here is a clean, stereo recording of David Cassidy singing On The Road.

The Cowsills were the primary inspiration for the The Partridge Family TV show - a real family band which included their Mom. Unlike the show, which featured actors lip-synching to professional musicians, the Cowsills could really play and sing. As Shirley Jones once put it "They were the real deal".

Shirley Jones looking like she could do this until she's 100 😂❤
Great track
This song has the most beautiful lyrics!
Never understood why this song didn't make the charts.
Agreed, check out the alternate mix with David Cassidy.
King's Island, Ohio? Wow.
The Partridge Family is my all time favorite TV show. I love the music. TPF, and David Cassidy forever,!! 🎼🎵🎶
This was at Marineland.
Oh, David! later life was pretty cruel 2U
I love the song Peace In Your Soul❤
Come along, and meet everyone now,and hear them singin'!
This song is one of a few written by the late Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. God bless them.
Hi Susan!
I love this song, and "Together"(Havin' A Ball). I just wish David Cassidy would've sung this instead of The Ron Hicklin Singers.
The most beautiful face ❤ Love David Cassidy forever.
I've always adored this song..I remember watching this episode as a little kid when it originally aired in 1971..Thank you for posting it here!..Is there anywhere I could find the promotional copy of this song?
Beautiful
I am still listening this day Saturday, June 15, 2024, I just turned 62 in February, and Father’s Day is tomorrow. These are some of the best songs ever written.
You are not alone , brother. I couldn't agree more. 😎👍
@@marccollins4929 same here brothers!
Just heard this song for the first time and I'm in my 60's. I fell asleep watching The Partridge Family (recovering from a cold, not from boredom) and heard this in my dreams. Woke up and wow, how beautiful! Who wrote it?
When i was a teen, we all detested david cassidy BUT i watched the show religiously and even collected the baseball cards with the lyrics of the songs on the back. We were all jealous of david cassidy - myself and my friends. Who wouldnt be? Talent and looks for days. One of favourite songs of their along with I woke up in love this morning. His later life snd death were so sad. Rest easy brother
It is really hard to pick a favourite PF song, but if I had to, it would be this one. Why? It is a feel good tune. Amazing vocals from David and Shirley. Uplifting lyrics, melody and arrangements. It stands the test of time. I find it elegant and sophisticated. The group enjoyed performing it on stage. The audience loved it. Especially the really cute smiling guy in the white shirt rocking to it. Simply a gift for those that appreciate good music.
Great song
How odd that I'm barely in my 40s and I recalled this song tonight in conversation with a friend. Why do I know the words?? Lol crazy.
& Kudos to the 'REAL' back up singers - Just plain fantastic
You got that right! Shirley and David were the only ones who were actually singing. The rest were session musicians. Whoever those session players and singers were, had talent out the ass! BEAUTIFUL MUSIC! God, how I miss my youth!
Partridge family is simply awesome and terrific 😊
Bobby Sherman STILL 100% sexy and cute !
This song is absolutely stunning, retro and very 1970's. I love it !
This is from the pilot episode before they let David sing lead vocals. When they hired David Cassidy for the role of Keith Partridge, they didn't even hire him to sing, it was all going to be done by studio musicians. It was Shirley Jones who told them he could sing and he had to audition again for them before they decided to let him sing lead vocals.
Shirley Jones has always been SO pretty and a wonderful person. Love her!
This was off their third album. Fun fact: on the first two albums they sped up up David Cassidy's voice to make him sound younger. Until he realized what was going on and put a stop to it. So this is the first album where his voice is not sped up.
GOOD JOB!
For me, their most beautiful, melodic song. The arrangement is stunning. Just like the Monkees, they were more than just a TV show band. Along with I Think I Love You, they had some massive hits in the early 70s. Before there were "boy bands", there were groups like The Monkees, Partridge Family, Jackson 5 et al. I think we called it bubble gum pop. But this is simply a beautiful song. Thanks, Shirley, David, and Susan et al. for this one!
Wow, back from my time and I had no idea it was The Cowsills that performed it 😀
It was originally performed in the Broadway musical "Hair".
@@partridgefamilybus2021 Yup, I remember the musical but never had the chance to see it. Being a young(ish) 67, I am going back to the music that I nearly forgot about and learning a lot in the process.
I was about 7 or 8, grew watching the Partridge Family, had the records, couldn't take my eyes off of David or his beauty. I would come home from 2nd/3rd grade, put their album on and even though I had blue eyes, I'd pretend they were brown and he was singing to me. Our era really had the talent in music and lookers. I think "Rainmaker" was my personal favorite though.
How could you not love that voice? The range, the emotions, the purity? Sweetness. ❤️ Couldn't stand that bus lol
That bus was the best paint job EVER!
What is Danny doing with that guitar? Lol
Me either
I forgot this treasure 🎁
GOOD JOB!
From one of the episodes from the fall of 1971
Oh How I Love This Music.
Good track
One of the greatest Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil songs that they did. I wish The Brady kids would do a cover version of I'm On The Road.
Or The Cowsills. Their version might be better than The Partridge Family's.
Hi Chris!
I wish The Brady Kids could've done this song. It sounds like something they would do. What do you think?
I would rather The Cowsills had sang it instead.
I'M ON THE ROAD showcases the Wrecking Crew at their very best.
