I see a lot of aftermarket replacements on the forums made of non-porous material and I had a theory of why Mercedes made them of this cloth material. My theory is that the cloth allows more air to enter the length of the tubes and as that hot under hood air enters the cloth and meets the cooler air inside the tubes, its all cooled by the time it reaches the engine. Meaning the tubes get more air than a solid non-porous tube would. If anyone knows different please elaborate because I know Mercedes engineers put a lot of thought into what's made but with an occasional boo boo so I could be mistaken. But I would like to know the true reason they are made from a filter type cloth.

Its an interesting theory. I've wondered why in the past. in the m177 they use plastic all the way and there are I believe more reports of hydro locking from water ingress like driving by someone who kicked up water.

@@TunedMercedes I never thought about the reverse possibility of the cloth material acting as a drain. I have wondered how the paper air filters stay dry when driving in the rain since moist air is being sucked in.

My intake tubes are HARD AS ROCK. Extremely difficult to remove. They dont compress. The only way to get them back on is to remove the main cover at the same time and lower all at once. I dont understand the conversation about ripped or cloth tubes. Mine are like concrete and they dint seem porous at all. What do you suggest?

this actually makes ripping kind of more likely.

So how many kilometers we should replace? In my country the temperature are 60° C and the car had 30.000 kilometers do I need to replace or not? It's seems look OK from out. What your recommendation.

that is a good question. I noticed it when looking at the data logs. but you can also check when you do the air filters by looking through the tubes when you take them off. If they are ripped you may see light through them or other obstructions internally.

I just noticed a ripped one on my S550. Do you know if Mercedes purposely made them out of this cloth like material for a reason?

Is there alternative besides expensive carbon fiber ones but not regular replacement?

I've seen a few people working on some custom intakes. I'd like to get some more data on them before recommending them but they could be solid. I don't think blackboost or UPD comes with these new tubes. I think only VRP offers them.
