The thing I love about both of them is that they never really waste notes or embellish solos. Everything is in deliberate service to the song. There's no bloat, and you are just carried on a journey with them.

I never thought about the fact that I had very similar reactions to hearing both songs for the first time. I heard Teen Spirit while driving to meet a friend who was also driving. I was born in '93 so I missed the whole era but it's cool too see the perspectives of where the fellow bands were at and where their head was at musically :)

The 90's were awesome, heavy but music that had a very sensitive side to it also, lyrics dealing with issues of loneliness instead of going to a bar to get a root. Nirvana opened the door with Smells Like Teen Spirit,it was that much of a song that the suits bought in to it and we saw alt music take centre stage. I was jumping on my couch when I first heard Smells Like Teen Spirit, I still rock out when it comes on the radio, it reminds me of being 23 and thinking life was going to grand!
For some reason, I specifically remember how I heard about "Nevermind" - it was on MTV Headbangers Ball, and they had a regular segment where some Dr Demento-like guy would sit in front of a pile of CDs telling the audience about some new finds. He pulled out that CD and could not stop gushing about it. IIRC he kept saying we'd hear more about this band...and Cobain showed up on a later ep wearing dress LOL.
I went to the Big Day Out in Australia and on one day i watched The Ramones, Smashing Pumpkins and many other bands. Soundgarden came on at the end of the evening and they blew the joint up. It was a insane show, the lead singer broke every single string on his guitar.
Ive read that Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic heard a demo of Black Hole Sun on January 30, 1994 at Robert Lang. Kurt loved it. They heard that demo before anybody! due to the fact they were in a studio about to record a song and one of the engineers happened to record Soundgarden demo a few days earlier. Kurt put down You Know Your'e Right after hearing that, and added 7 vocal takes to it. I listen to those two back to back often. Too young. I was born in 1990 and only really knew "grunge" when it was starting to phase out, only as an adult with full access to misic have I fully appreciated the songs from my childhood.
As a jazz musician I love that this tune can be played in F minor. Remember to play the D flat key and during the interlude play f minor and f# major. The syncopation is automatic. Slow or fast it just works.
1st time for me ; Eugene Oregon , Green Noise Records the owner just received a box of the lp (from SubPop no less) and put one on "loud" blew me away like nothing prior listened to side 1 and bought it on the spot !
I was just watching this assuming the dude in the red shirt was like a band manager or producer or something. Then they frame them both in close up, and it's like "Oh holy shit! That's Krist Novoselic!" When did the rock heros of my youth turn into my dad!?
I remember the first time I heard SLTS and Nevermind. I remember where I was and exactly what was happening. The album blew me away. Like nothing I’d ever heard. Similar reaction to appetite for destruction a few years before.
Krist misses his beloved Kurt. Dave misses him. We all do miss him. Especially his daughter Frances. I hope she knows he's with her in a different light now. 🕊
Great content here and I agree with all the guys about the genius in those songs and the host dude is right about the difficult chord changes in some nirvana stuff and black hole sun I've been playing guitar for years and those songs still trip me up sometimes

I'm not including Bush, Hanson or Dave Matthews, sorry.
Can you think of more?
Marylin Manson, Rage,
@@JustLikeHeaven77 Firstly, are you Gen X ? And secondly, you didn’t mention some of the absolute most iconic 90s grunge or alternative rock albums of all time.
First time a 17 year old me and my cousin heard Smells like Teen Spirit I turned right around in my 87 Honda Accord on route 1 in College Park Md and drove straight to the Record shop near UM and bought the cassette within a matter of 15 minutes
“Not gratuitous prog…. In service to the song” nail on head.
Ty, Rick! (as always)♡
Black Hole Sun and heart shaped box have similar vibes.
indeed
Having grown up through this time in music I was able to witness everything great that was coming out with Rock n Roll Metal and Grunge it was many bands best albums, still my favorite to listen to and take a trip back to my glory days 86-91 💥🤘✌✊🎶
I clicked on the video and started listening but instantly forgot what it was about.
I swear I thought I was listening to Neil Degrasse Tyson talk about nirvana.
😂😂
Kurt Cobain e Chris Cornell revolucionaram toda uma geração. Fazem muita falta ao rock e a música 🎶 em geral, suas obras junto a suas bandas continuará por séculos....

Kim may be the most underrated musician in rock music.
Musicians know his value if the public does not
Not just these 2 bands, but Pearl Jam's TEN and VS, and Alice In Chains DIRT have so much sophistication.
Too young. I was born in 1990 and only really knew "grunge" when it was starting to phase out, only as an adult with full access to misic have I fully appreciated the songs from my childhood.
Sophisticated
So thankful I was born in 1976 cuz like my father before me went through a Music Revolution and like his son after him
whoop loved this man what days these were
Awesome convo🤘
I was in the front row at a sound garden concert it was amazing!
Krist looks like Dr. Phil!! Lol
i've been unsuccessful placing his familiarity until i read this comment
@@tfwnoyandere 😆 your welcome. Lol
You can also say he looks like Peter Sellers from the original pink panther
Great journalism....
To post anothers video, reminds me of Woodward and Bernstein.... Truly brave and relentless in the pursuit of truth.
I was just watching this assuming the dude in the red shirt was like a band manager or producer or something. Then they frame them both in close up, and it's like "Oh holy shit! That's Krist Novoselic!" When did the rock heros of my youth turn into my dad!?
When you try to keep it clean and simple and honest to what you're doing, then magic happens for everyone to enjoy it.
“Not gratuitous prog. Always in service to the song” amen
Legends in one room lol
Two great bands of my generation!
I remember the first time I heard SLTS and Nevermind. I remember where I was and exactly what was happening. The album blew me away. Like nothing I’d ever heard. Similar reaction to appetite for destruction a few years before.
I absolutely love Rick
I love the part where Soundgraden hears smells like teen spirit for the first time
Krist is just sitting there like 👁👄👁
I love how all these people are mentioning the bands great songs, and me, why haven’t they heard this song ever, until now
Kim Thayil is a fucking jet and so underrated
Krist misses his beloved Kurt. Dave misses him. We all do miss him. Especially his daughter Frances. I hope she knows he's with her in a different light now. 🕊
I still can’t believe Chris is gone.
It's so sad they both took their own lives.
r.i.p. both kurt and chris
That A Perfect Circle hat though. 🔥🔥🔥👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🫡🫡
I'm betting we all knew exactly what "those two notes" were immediately, even if you aren't a musician.
Great content here and I agree with all the guys about the genius in those songs and the host dude is right about the difficult chord changes in some nirvana stuff and black hole sun I've been playing guitar for years and those songs still trip me up sometimes
I love Chris' problem solving skills. Can't stop the strings you don't want ringing from ringing? Simple. Remove them.
great history talks 💯 legendary groups
I think “Outshined” blew my mind the most when I first heard it. Black Hole Sun was already too polished and sodden, one of my least favorite Soundgarden songs. But, I absolutely adored SG,, still do.
I was 19,hair metal was so fucking played out, this was so refreshing
Nothing goes together like Sega's Roadrash and soundgarden...i swear they had a whole album on that game.
