Replace Radiohead with Tool and it's the same for me...discovered Soundgarden's first EP my freshman year in college (it was released in the fall prior). I was there too! Really good show. Chris just seemed tired from all the touring. He wasn't ranting..he was just chatting and chilling with everyone between songs. Didn't seem like anything was wrong
It just makes him that much kooler that he was up there with the "nobodies" in the nosebleed seats in the back of the house and not up in the front row with the VIPs.
Nothing is more beautiful than to see a true rock legend like Dave Grohl showing unconditional love and respect towards another band of his generation that was still touring. @@clownname2 nah, filming a dude who is just watching a band is fucking rude and uncool. it's the reason seeing such well known artists in the crowd is rare enough to be noteworthy (or worthy of filming). maybe you don't go to gigs or ever interact with 'famous' musicians (who cares), but filming a guy like that is a dick move. dealing with dicks doing dickish things and not just leaving them alone was one of the aspects of fame that really pissed nirvana off, and unfortunately i think the general mentality when it comes to "celebrities" has only gotten more ridiculous since then, with people thinking folks who play music owe them something, and that normal social conventions don't apply if you are in the presence of a "rock star".
I think Black Hole Sun is for sound engineers who appreciate stuff like "Tool", talking about the mathematics and complexity of the music all the time. And I don't prefer Black Hole Sun that much either. Even a song like "Gun", played with only 3 notes, sounds better to me. But I don't think my personal preference proves anything when it comes to the awesomeness of Black Hole Sun. I disagree with the comment which says it's for "the people who don't understand the whole soundgarden catalog". Maybe we don't understand Black Hole Sun.
@@John-dr8lz there's some alternative/punk rock bands from the early 2000s that I consider to be great. Motion City Soundtrack, Relient K, the Starting Line, Say Anything ect. Great underrated bands.

I could imagine turning around and seeing Dave Grohl. I was once in an empty movie theater to see Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and when the movie was over I turned around and Benicio del Torro was there with his parents watching the movie. To say I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone was an understatement after that movie.
Maybe I am burnt out on "Black Hole Sun" I never overly thought it was one of their best songs. I much prefer their other stuff. Same with Nirvana though I think there are far better songs in their catalogue then "Smells like teen spirit".
analyzing it later in life when I learned an instrument, I must admit it is quite interesting, the chord choices were surprising to me. That being said, I still change the channel when I hear it. I still prefer bad motor finger sound garden myself, but to each their own
Dave hit the bullseye when described Soungarden's early appeal. I turned a lot of people onto Soungarden back in the day. exactly...I mean, its such a simple thing, but when you think about it, when does something like that actually happen ? just how many 'rockstars' go and genuinely experience music like this ? casually going and being 'normal' because he loves the music and chilling in the audience.
Life lessened for so many when CC died, it really did. The world was better with him, and his music, in it. It just was. I'll always be sad about his absence.
Dave is the man on so many levels. So respectful, so talented, so well-spoken, such a great example of a good musician all around. Would love to just hang with the guy
Dave's comments on Superunknown are so spot on and honest, it's encouraging to see that someone like him who is also incredibly talented and could have looked at Soundgarden as competition, was instead able to appreciate what they were and had done with that record.
Even after all these years Grunge / The Seattle Sound is still my favorite genre of music. The songs were easy to relate to. They dealt with real life and were not centered around picking up groupies and partying like most of the hair band songs were in the 1980's. When you look at songs like Girls, Girls Girls, She's my Cherry Pie and Nothing but a Good Time they cannot hold a candle to Smells like Teen Spirit,, Outshined and Down in a Hole. There's no comparison. .
5 years ago I was stationed in England and my Sergeant mentioned how he missed his favorite singer Chris Cornell. I looked him up and having grown up near Seattle I knew so much of his music but never actually knew who he was. Mind blown. I was instantly hooked. RIP Chris Cornell/ Chester Bennington 🤘
Cmom gimme a break hes tryin way too hard to be exactly that guy your gushing about. He says the same thing bout every musician hes asked about. Its boring and safe and tho polite not very genuine. Had the huge pleasure to live my 20s in the Soundgarden era! What an amazing band....and it's great to see celebrities such as Dave Grohl sharing such greatness. Huge respect!!!!🔝
Something very special happened with the music scene in Seattle in the 90's. Dave is such a down to earth legend. Every chance he gets into the mosh pit with everyone else to rock on with other big bands that he likes.
I remember listening to Badmotorfinger when it came out and it blowing my mind. At the time I didn't understand them getting lumped into the grunge scene because to me it was (and still is) a metal album.
at 4:51 its nice to see someone who could be on stage n lead the whole crowd just being in the crowd and acting like a fan, dave grhol is such a great artist
I dunno id say alice in chains and soundgarden were a step above the rest of the bands around at the time. In terms of heaviness, innovation, melodically etc.
@@benjamindevlin4057 No. Kurt Cobain wrote good vocal melodies, but he was limited as a musician - Chris Cornell and Jerry Cantrell were much more advanced as both players and songwriters.
@@benjamindevlin4057 well nirvana was more raw around the edges. Sure they had melodic songs but in terms of the musicianship aic was amazing live as well as soundgarden. They were more accomplished musicians. Nirvana had more punk in their roots while obviously aic veered towards metal which generally speaking is more precise. But that just my opinion.
Just shows how much Dave loves live music and this band. You know he could a asked Chris for whatever seat in the house he wanted but he wanted to feel apart of the crowd and feel it from a real simply lover of music
Do people realize how BIG an endorsement it is for Kurt to admit he likes a band that is popular, soundgarden is literally the only band that got famous that I’ve heard him say he liked
@@allsystemsgo8678 IT's an interesting point and counterpoint to Dave. Kurt is a scene guy, he loved the raw underground sound of bands doing it themselves and clearly wasn't a fan of anything he felt was music to be popular. Dave is a pure muso, enjoys the craft and can enthuse about anything. I think it;s very intersting though that Kurt mentions Soundgarden alongside mudhoney and Tad because sound wise they are so different. You can literally hear how Tad and Mudhoney influenced Kurts music but there's no real song by Nirvana apart from maybe something like Heart Shaped Box that resembles a Soundgarden song. Which I guess goes to say how fucking amazing Soundgarden are because it can be recognised by someone with such a very specific taste.
Every one who came in contact with Cris had to like him he was a musical geniuses and thats that end of story he was the first to get a big contract first to get signed to a big label the first to do a world tour the first because he was best it was not luck or an acident that Chris Cornell was the FIRST @ LAST@BEST to come out of Seattle
Saw Soundgarden at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis in the late 80's - 1989 I think. Cornell climbed up on the amps during Get On The Snake and clambered around the ceiling pipes over top the crowd. I had never heard of them prior to that show but I sure heard of them afterward. I'm trying to recall who they opened for.... D.R.I. maybe? Danzig or C.O.C? I went to alot of shows there and I wasn't exactly sober. I do remember it being a cool show and we went out and bought their cassette and jammed it in my speaker-laden Chevette. Been a fan ever since.
It's so cool to see Dave rocking out with the crowd. We all know that he's talented enough to have been on the stage. The man is a huge rock star, but he's a fan first. I freakin love that dude. I'm not sure it was cool that that person was randomly filming him, but whatever. I'd have been astounded to see him there too.
Luis Hernandez whats Hollywood about him? Because he isn’t whining about girls or being angsty? He’s 50+ years old and has kids. Like holy shit people can’t be edgy and emo forever. He’s the face of modern rock and roll more than anyone else.
You gotta love Dave's humble perspective... Always minimizing his accomplishments And heaping praise on others... To me Dave in the food fighters are one of the most relevant rock band still making music... My absolute favorite musician
Travis Jones That’s with everything though. Not every basketball player makes it into the NBA, not every Chef gets a show on the food network, not every musician gets a break through. Just the way the world works :/
@@MrShahid0072 Idk man. Nirvana was my favorite band when I was growing up. When In Utero came out that's all I listened to. But the older I get, the more i love AiC and Soundgarden. Maybe I just got burned out on Nirvana? I feel like AiC and Soundgarden wrote more intricate, thought out tunes.
@@OGStinkywizzleteats I think Soundgarden are great but AIC has a body of work I don't really care for. Kurt had a knack for vocal melody. The songs were not profound or anything or aspired to depict pain like Aic but they were musically just better IMO. Aic don't have the tunes. They have great instrumentation and a passionate vocalist but their tunes are boring to me. In the end they are obviously incomparable and are just lumped into one genre for marketing sake. But Nirvana is iconic to me and yeah time passes and you just don't feel that strongly for any artist like you use to. It's just how out minds are wired. I personally think Radiohead is the ultimate band of the 90s and none of the other bands come even to close to the beauty that is OK Computer. I like Aic..I am just not a huge fan. I don't listen to Nirvana anymore either but I do realize our minds seek novelty and the old stuff we once thought was great would never seem that great in the present. So there is always a bias when talking about music like that. But yeah.. Nirvana were exceptional and history will always remember them IMO.
@@MrShahid0072 I can see your point. Although AiC spoke to my soul. Maybe it's because I struggled with addiction, and that was a large part of Aic's lyrical content. Their vocal harmonies definitely don't appeal to everyone. As far as Radiohead goes, I'm in agreement. They are fantastic musicians. I would add STP to this list as well. They wrote catchy and very listenable music as well. They didn't get the credit due at the time because they weren't Seattle boys, and came at the tail end of grunge.
As a teen around '97, I had the cassette shopkeeper play "down on the upside" and the first song that came on was "blow up the outside world" and my friend and I just looked at each other and nodded a silent "oh hell yeah!!". Been a fan ever since.
Ironically, Black Hole Sun has always been one of my least favorites from that album...Spoonman, Superunknown, Fell on Black Days, Like Suicide..god every song is a fucking masterpiece.
Anybody at Lollapalooza 96 in Pownal VT ? Soundgarden did black hole sun and the sky went black and thunderheads rolled in. I was near the big lighting fixture, center stage out 2 or 300 ft. Thought it was going to be struck by lightning. That band was outstanding, Black hole not my favorite tune, but it was magical that day. I remember being awestruck by Cornel's voice. It was real. All of that amazing majesty from the albums was real all he had to do was open up and let it come ripping out. A legendary rock singer I will miss.
Not Elvis. He couldn't even handle The Beatles. He resented them and hated John Lennon. Elvis became an instant old fart and has been when the Beatles took over from 1963. The Beatles loved Elvis and were inspired by him, but he was too full of his own fragile ego and bullshit to respect that or them. Yeah, that's right, I have little respect for "The King". Look up how he teamed up with Nixon and FBI to war against The Beatles. F Elvis!
I started listening to grunge music hardcore in early 1994 when I was 11 years old and grew up worshipping the Seattle scene along with all other good 80s and 90s bands. So glad I got to see most of the bands live and meeting a lot of them too. Dave Grohl is a great humble guy and I love that he’s talking about soundgarden in such a positive way. Although I truly believe Alice and chains and Nirvana were just as good as Soundgarden. Either way music will never be that good again. So glad we have it forever. Thank you to all the great musicians dead and alive who made it for us to enjoy.
Imagine you’re in the crowd at this concert and you start hearing someone nailing some sick vocals next to you and turn to see it’s Dave Grohl lol. What a trip..
This is the difference between Dave and someone like Kurt or Billy Corgan. Dave isn't at all insecure about himself so he's not afraid to spread love to other musicians. He is arguably the most talented out of any of them but isn't so judgemental. I see Kurt as the Regina George of grunge and Dave is Gretchen.
Soundgarden/Audioslave/Temple of the Dog will always have a special place in my heart. I'd kill to go back in time and be able to see any of them live.

Then came the first listening of Jane's Nothing Shocking (which happened to coincide with a first experience with mind-altering substances...tell me there's no such thing as fate), and shortly thereafter Ultramega OK and Nirvana's Bleach dropped. My head was spinning, literally and figuratively. What an amazing time. Equally amazing is that I actually remember some of it, lol.
@blue heeler I received "paranoid" on 8track on my 6th birthday. I stopped listening to Black Sabbath after hearing evillive. I love Sabbath ❤️ I just didn't listen to them when I was in my teens. Also Iron Maiden was a big band for me in Elementary school
@blue heeler I haven't stopped listening to Masters of Reality since your last post .. Thanks
Also been listening to Tools Fear Inoculum...I'm starting to think Tool is a Mount Rushmore band. Their Drummer is Jesus and their singer is Lucifer. I may have ingested to many thc's but this album is like what church is supposed to be

Jane's Addiction early was amazing
Saw Soundgarden in Indianapolis 2017, a week before Chris died. What an amazing talent and great loss. RIP CHRIS!!!!

How the hell can a guy like Dave Grohl get away with just standing in the crowd at a rock concert?
Silly Skeleton he doesn't have teen fan girls screaming to have him touch them.
he isn't attracting a lot of atention and honestly looks like a fanboy
Silly Skeleton respect
It just makes him that much kooler that he was up there with the "nobodies" in the nosebleed seats in the back of the house and not up in the front row with the VIPs.
Becaise a band like Soundgarden attracts a crowd that won't be dicks.
Nothing is more beautiful than to see a true rock legend like Dave Grohl showing unconditional love and respect towards another band of his generation that was still touring. That is the ultimate sign of NO ego. All of humanity can learn from watching this video. I got goose bumps watching Dave rock out at the Sound Garden concert. WOWWWWWWW !!!!!!!!!!!!!
A great lesson of life Dave did, if you truly love something, be humble and cheer others, dont forget who you are and from where you came.

dealing with dicks doing dickish things and not just leaving them alone was one of the aspects of fame that really pissed nirvana off, and unfortunately i think the general mentality when it comes to "celebrities" has only gotten more ridiculous since then, with people thinking folks who play music owe them something, and that normal social conventions don't apply if you are in the presence of a "rock star".

I like "Fell On Black Days" better than "Black Hole Sun".
@@thebooger_boy4002 Amen. One of the worst songs on an otherwise tremendous album.
No question
I think Black Hole Sun is for sound engineers who appreciate stuff like "Tool", talking about the mathematics and complexity of the music all the time. And I don't prefer Black Hole Sun that much either. Even a song like "Gun", played with only 3 notes, sounds better to me. But I don't think my personal preference proves anything when it comes to the awesomeness of Black Hole Sun. I disagree with the comment which says it's for "the people who don't understand the whole soundgarden catalog". Maybe we don't understand Black Hole Sun.

Dave is the man on so many levels. So respectful, so talented, so well-spoken, such a great example of a good musician all around. Would love to just hang with the guy
If Dave noticed the guy filming him he would probably think something like "If you're gonna film anyways, film the band, not me"
Dave's comments on Superunknown are so spot on and honest, it's encouraging to see that someone like him who is also incredibly talented and could have looked at Soundgarden as competition, was instead able to appreciate what they were and had done with that record.
Soundgarden was probably my favorite grunge band in the 90s.
To have people just screaming , yelling & singing a song you wrote back to you, must be an amazing experience! 💕🥰💕
There's no comparison. .
Thanks dude who filmed Dave that was cool to see Dave rocking out like a regular fan!

No. Kurt Cobain wrote good vocal melodies, but he was limited as a musician - Chris Cornell and Jerry Cantrell were much more advanced as both players and songwriters.

Saw Soundgarden at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis in the late 80's - 1989 I think. Cornell climbed up on the amps during Get On The Snake and clambered around the ceiling pipes over top the crowd.
