  • Part 2 of today’s podcast is a 1-on-1 conversation between Adam and Jay Leno. The guys begin by talking about comedians who waste time doing crowd work, Jay’s incredible memory, and wrapping your mind around people’s feedback on your work. They also chat about being interested in both comedy and mechanics, a typical day in the life for Jay, and putting together his incredible car collection. Later, Adam asks Jay about his early days of standup comedy, and they go on to discuss comedians that Jay thinks are great. In the last part of the show, Adam asks Jay about his religious beliefs, and Jay tells a story about Rodney Dangerfield.

I saw Leno's show live in June of 1994. Danny DeVito was a guest, All-4-One performed "I Swear" and Ray Romano did standup. Jay said hello to us fans at the end of the taping while they were taking some quick 10 second spots for promotion. The mood in that room was so positive and upbeat. He is one incredible machine and the real deal. Ray Romano was on my flight back to JFK the next day on an empty 767. I briefly said hello to show respect and he was a guy that was obviously working his tail off. And, it paid off! Those were the days. Jay is so impressive as a work machine and such quick wit. @@galaxytraveler5779 no. That’s how they are in Hollywood. It’s such a cutthroat business, it turns people bitter. @@galaxytraveler5779 The shows ratings went into the toilet after Jay retired, so they hired him back. Conan isn't funny (IMO) and was never meant to be a prime time guy. Back then late-late night shows were all that was on TV at that hour, because they got a few ratings didn't mean they were good. I remember Craig Kilborn fully admitting he was only viewed by the unemployed at that hour lol (and his show was actually GOOD!)

@@galaxytraveler5779 It was entirely NBC, but I don't blame them either. The ratings for BOTH shows sucked. Conan fans aren't exactly forthcoming that he was doing trash in the prime time slot. They had to try to fix the situation, and if the old system works? Why the fuck not.
And I understand it, because at the time I wasn't a Conan fan and I stopped watching when he filled that position. Later in life I came to appreciate Conan's show more, but at the time I didn't - and that was the case for many people.

He’s never done a special and has said why he doesn’t want too (he can mishmash 40 years of standup and you’ll never hear the same jokes twice even if you see him two days in a row) so I hope he starts podcasting to tell HIS stories and anecdotes eventually and then does a few Netflix specials or something so we get a solid 3 hours of Leno one liners with his observational comedy.

This was an excellent hour, well spent. I was not a huge Leno fan during his Tonight years - preferred Letterman for the most part - but I have come to respect Jay more and more. His, and everyone's, public persona, is crafted, so he won't exhibit any of his flaws, but he appears to have it together. Plus, I love cars and have enjoyed many of his Garage videos. Even on those, he makes sure to bring it. Although these guys obviously don't do it any more for the coin, they support whatever staffs work with them, and I'm sure that is gratifying to them, even if they don't need to keep earning. Most true comics tend to work until they drop, and it's not always pretty.

Jay has always been fantastic. As a fellow car guy I’d love to spend a day, heck even a half day with him listening to his car stories and sharing some of mine. He’s spot on when he says it’s all about the story because my experience tells me the exact same thing. Meeting him is on my bucket list.

Amazing position. Most of the people are greedy -- in a sense, it didn't t come as a surprise.
Jay Leno appears to be a decent, stable and ethical person.
    Good for him !
The Tonight Show was Carson. Leno became a consistent second.
After that, the Show has not had comparable persons sitting behind that desk..amazing

Being born in 84 I think I was the last generation to ever experienced how amazing life was growing up pre- social media and the internet totally changing the world forever. When I graduated I had the Nokia, still had to say it was your cell on the voicemail greetings cause the house phone # was still the important phone and way more reliable. Looking back now thank god I missed growing up anytime after that..
