Whenever comedy greats have talked about brilliant writers, Robert Smigel's name always comes up.
It was a treat to hear him talk about these classic sketches he wrote and of course doing some Insult Comic Dog was awesome!

The episodes such as this one where the guest is someone that the guys worked with on SNL are by the best ones. The other ones become to interviewy and less interesting. This episode was a fascinating conversation that I could've listened to for another hour easily.

Yes! When the big bald-head evil guy gets into a 4-way phone conversation with the other super-villains, and one of them's ironing, while they speculate on the duo's sexuality, and Dr. Big-Head Evil says, "Of course there's nothing _wrong_ with it...that's not what this is about..." I thought that was absolute comedy genius.

If I was to describe this in one word, it would be: CutForTime
It was almost unnerving at the end, how Smigel had so much to say and so little time left, because of the interview already winding down.
So if for any reason you'd ask me, I'd bring him back.

I had to come back to this one! Best guest…greatest SNL/Conan writer and Triumph, along with Jimny Glick is the greatest TV character of all time! Thank you Smeigel! Old white people complimenting each other! Lol Genius! You legends should take over SNL today and save that show! It kills me that to me it’s unwatchable……1988-1992 is the greatest cast ever! Jan Hooks, Dana, Phil, Myers my goodness……the level of talent right there is mind blowing ! Even the utility players were unbelievable! The resurgence definitely was ‘98 class…. The Hader & Armisen class was great ….to me the downfall was when Tina left taking everyone to 30 Rock and the nail in the coffin was Fred , Hader , Amy, Forte,Maya, the legendary Darryl Hammond and #3 greatest SNL performer of all time, Dana being #1 and the once in a generation talent Phil Hartman #2, is the legendary Kristen Wig! To me when that 2008 class left SNL was done…….breaks my heart…..I written many sketches and never attempted to get my sorry ass to 30 Rockefeller with the attempt to becoming the next Jack Handy …..it was cut short because of my ex preventing me from going back to NY……..#Save SNL Pull a 1985! “ Come back with my show! “- Robert Smigel/Lorne Michaels TVs Funhouse! Brilliant!

Smigel did a SNL cartoon called "Downey, Kidder & Heche" -- a trio of private investigators who had very public reputations at the time for 'odd' behaviors involving mental health issues. Absolutely hilarious . . . though now, after the tragic ends of Margot Kidder and Anne Heche, in retrospect Smigel maybe (?) doesn't feel so good about it...? But, damn, when I first saw it live on Saturday night, it made me roar with laughter. I always got the impression that the bit was just poking fun at them, not being really mean intentioned.

It’s kind of funny hearing Smigel have this sort of sensitivity encounter group talk after all the savage comedy he did with Triumph, However I don’t he’s hypocritical honestly because everyone has two sides to them especially that transition when you get past 40. Truly sounds like a good guy. It’s just breaking balls you can honestly look at as a sign of affection. But in can definitely go too far. Even Dana with the percodan sandwich with Elvis was a little dark, but some of the best comedy is dark and that’s just the way it is.

These guys are all geniuses, but the conversation over being sensitive about hurting people's feelings makes me SO disappointed in them. Here is the only calculation a comedian should be doing when writing comedy: is it funny? If the answer is "yes," then you do it. The all-time greats: Pryor, Carlin, Hicks, Murphy, Burr, Chappelle, Rickles, etc. never worry about people's feelings. Comedy is supposed to be honest. That's why it is valuable. That's why it's important. If comedians start to censor themselves, then there's no way left to cope with reality. Carson's comments could've been taken out of context or he could've been half joking. But if he was seriously hurt by a funny bit, that's his over-sensitivity. Carson made a living making fun of people, so suddenly he forgot what comedy was all about? That whole reason for then censoring yourselves is bullcrap.
