    I've built my Yugo SKS exacrly like this. This was the foundation for all my hard work. I cut the barrel down and recrowned it. And did everything else.

    I really like your rifle. Great look with the Timbersmith stock, really classy. Peep sights are always on point for us retired Army types, so kudos for that upgrade. I have two SKS rifles - a "paratrooper" and a plain Jane type 56, both from Norinco. Thanks to your inspiration, my 20" model will be seeing some of your upgrades soon, and I thank you so much for sharing!.

    Now that is a gorgeous SKS! If I had not just finished a 12.5" AR and had a few barrels for other builds to work with, I'd be all over this but this is definitely on the list!
    However, I'd rather go with a pin and weld job with a dynacomp vs the 17". The velocity difference would be tiny and would increase the overall handiness.

    I love what you did with your Yugo. I always wanted to do it with mine but when I had it I remember reading something that it was illegal to modify import guns or guns made before a certain date or SOMETHING which is why I never even attempted to cut off the totally helpful grenade launcher.

      Also since you use the Tapco mags the Tapco stock isn't that bad even though you said you didn't want polymer.

  • @caseyjoanz
    @caseyjoanz 8 років тому

    Well done! The only complaint I have about the TimberSmith line is the lack of a front sling swivel. It seems like a small thing, but if you plan on scoping it (Choate side mount) and shooting from a bench, a Harris bipod-perfectly centered, is much better than a barrel attached bipod. You said you did it yourself. (Nice job!) I did the same thing, but it's not a "quickie", accurately tapping into laminated wood. Looks really good! It's your gun; you used a proven action to build what you wanted. Those who disapprove aren't required to do the same.

    • @ZRUSOutdoorsChannel
      @ZRUSOutdoorsChannel  8 років тому

      hey thanx for checking it out man!

    • @crazyfvck
      @crazyfvck 8 років тому

      +caseyjoanz Your comment confuses me.. Why does the TimberSmith stock need a front sling swivel? The SKS already has a sling loop built into the gas block (at least the Yugo does.. never owned any others.) Are you referring to the rear sling swivel? THAT you do lose if you go away from the factory buttstock.

    • @crazyfvck
      @crazyfvck 8 років тому

      +crazyfvck In my opinion, the only problem with the TimberSmith stock is the lack of a bayonet groove. The integral bayonet on the SKS is one of the things that I love about it.. It's a shame to get rid of it, just for the sake of upgrading to a nicer buttstock.

    • @caseyjoanz
      @caseyjoanz 8 років тому

      A Harris-style bipod requires a sling swivel to mount it. Unless you want to screw a rail into wood. Other than that, you're putting your bipod on the barrel. For benchrest shooting that affects the barrel's harmonics. Anything that touches the barrel and puts the slightest alteration as to how it flexes as combustion presses the projectile forward disrupts it's resonance and alters it's consistency. That's why a free-floated barrel has an advantage.

    Gave a thumbs up even though I'm a big time milsurp collector and purist. Your rifle, do what you want. It looks amazing, but I wish people would stick with commercial Norincos when they wanna chop one.

    Really sweet looking gun! The ak nuzzle brake is really effective but makes the gun seem way louder. As a recreational shooter maybe a Krebs type ak flash hider or a Bulgarian Krinkoff flash hider might improve your comfort. But hey it's your gun and you can set it up anyway you want! The montecarlo laminate stock looks really nice. Too bad the tapco stock won't let you keep the bayonet cause you never know!

  • @josephmcguire9128
    @josephmcguire9128 Рік тому

    I actually took front sight off with bayonet lug. I put a matador picatinny rail that goes in at rear sight with a pin and now I just run a nice red dot on my norinco!

  • @kevinloungo

    hey great vid thats one nice looking sks. if your thinking of putting a scope on i would recommend grinding down the ejection port which allows the shells to shoot out more sideways than upwards so you dont have to worry about shells hitting your scope. it works great when you dont want to use a shell deflector and if using a choate mount still allows use of the iron sights!

  • @Shane-Singleton

    Damn. That shell pouch will fit the 7.62x39 strippers but won't fit any silver bullets!
    Pretty neat build. The grain on that replacement stock really mimics the grain on the original Yugo stock but far more pronounced. I just picked up a Yugo last week. It's the 4th SKS i've owned and was looking up what people were doing with theirs and stumbled across this video. I'm going to keep mine stock. I wouldn't call myself a "purist" because that, to me, means that by modifying something you're diluting its greatness or effectiveness. I don't think that's true. I'm just more nostalgic rather than a purist. I buy the old school mil surps because I like the old school stuff the way it is :). Now that being said the SKS has been a popular modification host for YEARS. It's well suited to it. Good mechanism, most are nicely built. Enjoy!

    I love the build. The only thing I don't like is replacing the 10 round internal mag with 20 or 30 round duck bill mags. If I want to do that I would probably get an ak-47 but that's just me. Nice build by the way.

    I know this video is very old, but in case the uploader still sees this: did you have any issues with cycling after chopping the barrel? I cut mine down to exactly 16” (there’s still about 1.5” of bbl between the gas block & front sight) and I had a lot of stovepiping & short stroking. I also put an AK slant comp on mine, as well as replacing the old, depleted tritium capsules with brand new, bright units in the front & rear back ups.

    Very well done bud..! Im considering a rebuild with my sks. I had considered running 20 rd mags instead of stripper clips but from what I tried I did not like how slow it really took to lock/load/drop/lock/load... I know there are 1000's of sks builds using tapco mags - seems to be a 50/50 mixed crowd them... Any suggestions?

    • @ZRUSOutdoorsChannel

      +houseoffire72 i dont mind the 20round Tapco mags with the drop free bolt mod. i can load mine as fast as i can load my AK, and just as easily. if you havnt heard of it, do a search or check my channel, theres a how to video on it. But im also a fan of the factory box mag...

    Nice,very nice man! Since the barrel is now shorter,have you checked muzzle velocity on a chronograph? Specification on a 20" barrel SKS is alittle more higher velocity than an AK47's 16.5" barrel.

    Ive heard that shortening can mess up gas and cycling, I guess no issues here? It's a nice looking rifle !

      @ZRUSOutdoorsChannel  7 років тому

      you are correct. depending on the rifle it can, however, if there is still sufficient gas to cycle the bolt, there is no issue.

      ZRUS Outdoors Channel thanks for the reply. Seems like keeping it around 17 is a sweet spot. Might have to find a cracked stock special and try it.

    Definitely a work of art in progress- how much money have you invested with all your upgrades?

    • @ZRUSOutdoorsChannel

      +Aikidobear129 honestly not much at all. Tapco donated the stock to our channel to make videos on, so that saved a good amount, and i bought the rear sight used for $35. the front sight for $50.. the rest was just labor that i myself performed..

    Hello Z.R.US I really like the look of your SKS. This might sound like a silly question, I am intrigued about what muzzle break that is at 0.44 and what part/accessory is on the front of your piston tied to the front sight? Did your SKS come that way? I have a Chinese version fyi. I would like to replicate the look of your SKS (the front portion) at 0.44, as well as the stock and the rear sight. I have all the other info but if you could elaborate on the front portion, would be much appreciated.

      +katazone the "muzzle break" you saw was actually the grenade launcher/compensator that the Yugo sks' came with. I think you can buy them separately, but im pretty sure they're pinned on, so you'd have to do a little gunsmithing. I know mine came with it and its pinned on there.

    Great video and sweet rifle. How did you line up the prince 50 post, did you just eyeball it? and how do you swap out the old sight drum does it just push out of the old post? *****

    Hey buddy, do you have a suggestion for a muzzle device that creates the most back pressure? The Razor muzzle device I bought for this rifle after I modified it referencing your video, didn't create enough back pressure to cycle the bolt. I tried the chevron compensator from my C39V2, and it cycled most of the time but jammed every 5 or 6 rounds. I know you said to possibly start removing spring coils but I would rather try to create more back pressure.

      unfortunately i dont have much experience with muzzle devices .

    Great video. Beautiful sks. Question. Does the timberline stock come with the top half of the hand guard? and if so is it hard to fit it? Thanks .

    • @ZRUSOutdoorsChannel
      @ZRUSOutdoorsChannel  7 років тому

      it does come with the hand guard, and is fairly east to install, i have a how to video on my channel if you are interested.

      ZRUS Outdoors Channel. Thank you very much. I right now have a taco stock on mine but I think I want to go back to wood and a little closer to original but still nice looking.

    How are you in my head and doing all the projects I wanna do? I don't think this is quite as slick as your Mosin project but it's pretty damn good. And that stock is really nice. I've already cut my mismatched numbers Norinco SKS down to about 17". Now show me how you recrowned yours.

    • @1911jt
      @1911jt 10 років тому

      Yeah I just saw it. Good job. I want to keep the original wood stock from my rifle. I know they're on the skinny side. And I gotta get a real wood gas tube cover. I got a vented steel one last year from Amazon. It fits and looks like shit. I also gotta get that Bullet Button front sight base. But damn, they're about $50.00!

    It looks great but you could of really just bought a Paratrooper SKS.

    • @ZRUSOutdoorsChannel
      @ZRUSOutdoorsChannel  8 років тому +5

      +John Vazquez at the time of modifying this, the paratrooper was pulling $800. if you could find one... they are still hard to come by, but at least prices have come down.
