Very well done. Very accurate description of how it’s done and why it’s done. You might add that a Dremel tool could be used along with the grinder too get into the tight spot on the left of the bolt, keeping you from over grinding the lip.
oh and i did the mod and now my 20 round magazine slides in just like a ak now so again thanks for showing me this cool mod
Quite impressive how you used that angle grinder to strip down that bolt- the hands and patience of a surgeon. By the time your finished this will be one nice little sniper rifle. When I watched the project from the beginning I thought you'd really mess this rifle up- my Father always used to say you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear - looking at the finished product you proved him wrong. Good work!
+Aikidobear129 I unfortunately had to sell this one :( bills ..
When I did mine, I used a Dremel and a small assortment of hand files. I wanted to make it appear as original as possible. I took my time, followed the factory curves, finished sanded it and even polished the bolt as a last step. Mine came out very pleasing. I never did the mag adapter. I'm actually fine with the duck bill mags (helps me keep them straight from others). You have a "nice looking" SKS. I really like that stock. I bought mine with the Tapco aftermarket stock. I could throw mine in the mud and I'd be fine with it. It's truly a "battle rifle". Good video.
Great job with the 4 1/2in angle grinder, I would never thought it could be done with that tool.
That issue always bothered me. I did the mod and absolutely love it! I also cut the ball off of the slide to reduce the right hand pull, threaded the barrel and made a flash suppressor. works great! thanks!
I've done the exact same mod on mine. The wood stock looks beautiful on that SKS!
That was nicely done. clear, good visuals, and appreciated. I will be looking forward to the weekend and my project
VERY cool! Always wondered what the deal was with my Tapco mag not being removable unless I had the bolt locked open. Learned something very valuable today, thanks!
great SKS videos. I have a yogo coming my way in the next few days. I'm looking forward for your next mod! Great videos!
Great illustration ! You described the process so well.
Thats is a beautiful rifle. I like it everytime you show it
Oh man Thanx for having thos vid up still!! Been watchin since started! getn to this today...! Have great day brother!
7yrs ago today you helped! Thanks turned out well & good
DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE, Now im doing this to mine, I have a chromed sks in a dragonov stock with 20rds mags, front rail mount with magpul virt grip, going to get trinium tech sights for it. its my baby but this video seriously is dope my bro!!!
That is completely awesome,..Great lil tip, I've always said that there is nothing at all wrong with an SKS and that just takes it up a notch in functionality and usability,...Great stuff !! PoormanPrepper
i really like that wood stock, looks much more comfotable than the original one on my M59/66A1
I thought I would add I had a grinder and a Dremel, I found my cordless dremel using metal cutting blades and a stone grinding shaped like a coke can. But similar to the large grinder worked well. Why I realize you did not have a dremel. For those watching this, I used a Dremel and took twice as long maybe more. Id say 25min each side, however the finish product looks factory finish. You can be so precise and not take a chance in nicking the bold. Thanks for the video it turned out perfect for me, now taking my Yugo and doing the Barrel modification you have on your other video.
Thanks for the info on the dremel. When I do mine, I will start with the grinder then finish with the dremel, so that it looks nice.
I have done this by hand. With a file and sandpaper. Not a fun day! Good video. Keep them coming. Thanks!
yeah F that haha, I cant image doing this without power tools lol Thanks for watching, Ray!
Great instruction! It is so much more difficult to change magazines without the mod. I was hoping to find another bolt that was inexpensive to do the mod to so I can keep my bolt completely original with the matching serials.
Thanks for showing the supplies needed to complete job. That is definitely a must for my sks thanks.
I was looking for a workaround like this thanks so much!
Best looking SKS I've ever seen...good job!
Too right mate, I'm in love!
A milling machine would make that a lot easier lol. I wish I had a milling machine to do work on my AKs lol. As long as it works that's what matters and it works very well. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
***** Oh Yeah! I agree!
metaltrooper62 agreed
I did this yesterday, on one of my SKS. I found a die grinder, with a carbide bit worked much better than an angle grinder.
Good instructions. I have a non-numbers matching SKS I'm going to mod with this technique. There's a few small machine shops near us that do firearms work and I'm going to enquire what they'd charge to do that on mill. I really like the SKS platform. I own several AR's but shoot my SKS's more often than them. I even had one drilled and tapped for a scope and it's my go to deer rifle.
i love the SKS, its a great gun, i really like how this one turned out, but im still a huge fan of a stock SKS
Just noticed its been a few years since other people asked questions with no answer so i wont hold my breath!
UA-cam is horrible about letting me know that i have comments. but you have me now.
thanks for showing me this now i know what i need to do to my sks for a magazine.
Just did the mod. and added a SK-71 mag release adapter. Can now preform tactical reloads just like my AR. Thanks!!!
right on, Tim!
Great job my friend. It came out really nice and I might have to do that with my SKS
Great mod. For others doing this, use a 60 grit flap disk. Not a cut off disk
Careful using cut off wheels for grinding, they will come apart and when they do it totally sucks. Take it from me, I'm an idiot.
Sigkim i did that once !
Sigkim Lmao, we all have our moments buddy no worries. At least we're doing these jobs on our own instead of overpaying others to do it.
G Thomas Respect
I had one imbed itself in my safety giggles and skin
Good job and very well explained. I love your natural wood stock.
Thank you, Sam. This is a laminate stock by TAPCO.
Steady HANDS!! Nice work !!
it is really a nice looking rifle when you get done, great job
Allways wondered how they did this great video.
Nicely done sir..Good job and good video!
Nice work buddy
Stop making me want to buy an sks lol! I was looking at the website that you guys got the stock from and I kinda like the one where it's kind of a thumb hole pistol grip thing goin on. Can't wait to see that thing with a scope on it!
A Dremel tool would be the correct choice for this job. And the wet rag to cool the bolt down is completely overkill. Removing that small lip isn't going to create enough heat to affect the bolt in any way. Rifle Bolt's are designed to deal with much more heat and pressure than that little bit of material removal could ever create. The deal with explosions for a living after all
I used a dremel tool. Take your time and it does a fine job.
Awsome video, I did mine with a milling machine , but same thing. Debur, good to go, Thanks Buddy...
I milled mine out on the milling machine at school works great
Personally I would use a flap disc of about 80 grit or so. Faster and smoother job with less heat.Used them for at least 10 years.
Great video. I like your style of delivery. Non repetitive and straight to the point. Kinda like you actually know what you're talking about lol
thank you Max, I try and keep it interesting and informative on my channel :)
I put a tech site on my SKS couple years ago and I'm still shooting it today. They work very well.
Max Hill I think Tech Sights hit a home run with the SKS sight.
In Australia, we had the SKK, which had 3x 30-round AK mags.
Well, HAD being the key word there. And we have those too skk forbrussian and I believe yugo models and the chinese just added a D at the assumably for "detachable mags" that used steel AK magazines.
Cool guns but I've heard of some issues with them too.
I'd actually prefer this as to be honest, I just like fidgeting with all my guns and personalizing them. Plus gives me an excuse to buy/use tools.
Great how-to, like this rifle More each time you show it, Thanks
You already had the best mod for the SKS. The Tech Sights make the SKS a much more accurate platform if the shooter does his part.
Agreed, Tech Sights are pretty nice addition to any rifle!
thats the nicest looking sks I've ever seen
Nice mod but why did you use a cut-off wheel instead of a grinding wheel? Grinding wheels would be more stable and cut-off wheels are not the safest thing to use for side grinding (very easy to shatter).
that is a sweet looking sks rifle great job!!!
thanks man!
Great job my friend. Have you considered adding a spring to the free floating firing pin to prevent slam fires? I realize maintainance eleminates this problem but its just a precautionary thing. Great vid as always!!
Nice mod, thats a sweet looking rifle!
The SKS holds many surprises.
Excellent video, very thorough.
Bill Romanowski thanks bill
This was a very cool how to.. on a FAQ thanks.
Nice work. Thanks for sharing!
good video. cant wait for the duckbill mod video!
Super gun, the SKS, can't beat it for the price!
especially when they were under $100 !
@@ZRUSOutdoorsChannel yeah I wish they just charged me 600 for a Russian sks
I want to say thank you. lol, this was very helpful. I just finished mine.
right on man, glad it helped!
Is it still working? Any issues
Good job once again. But I think you could've gotten a generic Dremel for about the same price you paid for the grinder and wheels. I can't wait to see this mag conversion you mentioned to eliminate the duck bill mags. I hate plastic mags { and most Tapco products} but I have one of their flat dark earth 20 round mags. I want one of the Chinese 20 round Star fixed mags but they go for over $100.00 these days when you can find one.
wow! beautiful stock!
This SKS looks brand new & looks amazing. I really like to know where did you purchased it.
Works good. I've thought about modifying my SKS to accept AK mags. I'm curious to see how you do yours.
Awesome Video Bro!
Good Job, You speak very well.
thanks for this i used a dremel tool with good sucess, thanks for the upload
Gaanja Mon Did you find a dremel worked better? I realize slower but thought more control ?
Curious how well that worked for you.
@@OurOregonlife works great. A lot more accurate.
Nice mod, I'm doing it to mine soon =)
*****
I just finished this mod using a Dremel.Took about an hour and used up 2 bits but it works fine=)
+Sigkim I know what you mean; I feel the same way. If it helps, this modification really won't show until you field strip the rifle. You can also get polishing compound or fine grit sandpaper and really finish it off nicely so that it doesn't look too 'bubba'd'.
Where did you get your gun stock from ? its BEAUTIFUL.
Dermal works very well , Electric file will work as well, I need to ask about the hold open and magazine lever ?
did this to mine and its the best thing i ever did.
Great video! Thanks!!
Good vid. Nice how to vid.
I like your rifle it is very sweet , I like it so much I am going to copy it very nice piece of old to new good job...
Great video. I had no idea that could be done. No feed issues with modification?
Thanks for sharing!
great mod, thanks for the vid!
Great video, liked, and subscribed.
Thank you!
Great, this will help tons.
I'd do this with a rotary tool or take it to someone with a mill. It was informative though so thanks for posting it.
thanks for watching!
Just buy an sks M or D model they take AK mags use stripper clips on the box mag version just as fun. Nice video though man
Love the videos. Hey is there anyway you can customize your SKS to take AK mags. Thanks
With a Dremel using 1/2" barrel 80 grit sander much more precise. You could match that bevel without going past. You might even be able to clamp a guide over the step that you don't want to remove or mare. Then if you Finnish it off with 120 grit it look pretty much factory.
Sweet deal I'm going to try this on my Xmas gift
my question is after cutting down the bolt did you reharden it? that would compromise the the hardness after removing that much metal.
Great video!
Great video thank you
I think this is an awesome idea, and I applaud you for putting it up. Do you think it would have been better to use a round stone with a dremel? Remember that round stone you used when you faced the barrel off? That way you could maintain the round profile at the rear end of that groove. Just a thought, it's probably how I will do mine.
yeah, the method i chose was not the best, but yeah, anything that will grind fast to avoid heating the bolt too much will work.
Pops gave me a sks I appreciate this
Nice video well done!
beautiful stock
Great vid! Thank you
thanks for watching!
My Norinco SKS I bought in ‘88 takes AK flat back magazines I’ve heard of an M or D designation (it does have a longer barrel if that matters) it doesn’t have the groove for stripper clips and does not have the bolt hold open feature that standard SKS non-detachable models have
Great vid !
Great vids and you have a *super* clean SKS!!! Out of curiosity have you used (or know anybody who has) a Murray firing pin? There's seems to be mixed feelings about them
Interesting. It makes sense! Aside from the work you've done what else would you recommend as essential mods for an SKS? I'm looking to purchase a Norinco (all we can get in NZ) and want to dress it up. Possibly with a muzzle brake and/or a suppressor
very good video from canada..
ahhh, too bad for me. I was really looking forward to the flash compensator vid but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm still a fan...
You can also buy. Bolts already modified. That way you can go back to the original mag.
Awesome thank you.
Do you require to do any modification to the stock itself (aside removing internal 10rd mag) to fit duckbill mags?
Thank you sir that was interesting
