  • The Cuckoo is within easy reach of Melbourne nestled in the stunning Dandenong Ranges, an ideal venue for all celebrations and for tour groups.
Open nearly every day of the year, the Cuckoo offers a delicious international smorgasbord prepared by first class chefs in a warm and welcoming family atmosphere.
Decorated in the style of a Bavarian Chalet and with staff dressed in traditional costume.
The Cuckoo has been attracting visitors from all over the world for over 55 years!
Daily live entertainment: music and a floor show, cow bells ringing & yodeling equal to any in Bavaria.
Situated in the Dandenong Ranges, The Cuckoo Restaurant is today one of the world's most renowned smorgasbord restaurants receiving visitors from all over the globe. It is hard to believe that this buzzing 450 seat family restaurant started out as a modest refreshment stop for travellers. Called the Quamby and built in 1914, the café operated for 44 years remembered fondly for its strawberries and cream sold at 6d. a dish.
In 1958 the Quamby was sold to Willi and Karin Koeppen. Shortly after they moved in, Karin heard the sound of a cuckoo calling in the darkness. She woke her husband and said "We will call the café The Cuckoo".
What Karin did not realise at the time is that the word cuckoo can also mean a bit crazy. Although she had some reservations about this in the early days, the quirky and highly amusing Bavarian style floorshow has warmed hearts from all over the world in the unique "Cuckoo" way.
The smorgasbord style restaurants were very popular in Germany in the 1950's. Willi, who had spent some years in Germany as a chef created the first smorgasbord restaurant here in Australia and the family has worked hard since to build the Cuckoo into what it is today one of Australia's most successful restaurants.

Those of us who live in Melbourne and were around during the 1980s would remember The Swagman. It was a smorgasbord restaurant that had a floorshow, and was situated on the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges in Ferntree Gully. Sadly it caught fire and burnt to the ground. Ever since The Swagman no longer existed, The Cuckoo has been the closest thing that Melburnians have had to anything that resembles it. From my experience, I found The Cuckoo to be one of the best value for money all you can eat restaurants that I have ever been to. I have even got it on my list of possible places to go to for my 50th birthday. It has got so many varieties of foods to choose from on its buffet. And of course there's always the background music and the entertainment to go with it.
