If you ever move down here, don't get caught up in the tourist hype. Most likely you won't be living in Manhattan. Consider the Bronx or Brooklyn for an apartment.
This is a lovely demonstration of why a working musician really has to have a portfolio of working briefs to draw upon during any given week - bass, guitar, keyboard, arrangement, production, business development - it never ends, and can be really stimulating and exciting! I do like the idea that we have to be on the constant lookout for areas to improve ourselves - knowledge sharing, skill development and being more creative with our available time. I hope that at least one of the many people who request that musicians give of their time and material for free "because it will be free advertising for you!" - sees this and realises just how much effort each performer has to invest in themselves in order to stay in demand, let alone create a demand for their unique selling point.
I'd love to see a video on all the things you carry around with you throughout the week. Things you keep in your gig bag, things on your cart, in the suitcase, to practices/gigs, etc
I understand why some people in the coments are being so negative. I don't agree, but I understand. Most of them, don't share the joy of playing gigs, or rehearsing. I love playing music but I would hate to make it my job. Others are saying this looks great and fun and whatnot. To me it looks awful. I'd rather keep music a hobby, but I'm glad for those who can enjoy making a living with it.
Yep, I tried it, not full time though. I taught private students, on Saturdays for a music school and a few wedding gigs. All this on top of being a full time student at university. I completely burnt out. Strictly a passion for me and I don’t even feel like gigging.
Being a multiinstrumentalist is not only helpful, it's the best way to be a musician, making a living off it or not! If I had the money (and talent :s), I'd play like 7 different instruments and learn to sing on top of that :)
Paul Davies being a multi instrumentalist is actually very common nowadays - so common that it has lost a little of its meaning. Most musicians can play some guitar and keys.

Right now I’m in a taxi, heading toward my studio, in the outskirts of Moscow. And definitely it’s a fascinating experience to watch your video about daily routine of a musician from the other side of the planet. Especially that we all have to do the same tasks over and over again. World is a big village, isn’t it?
Wow... this really puts into perspective how busy life can be at times for a musician, and honestly really opened up my eyes to how much more I can be doing instead of wasting my time like I usually do. Thank you, and great video (as always)
congrats on staying so busy - it looks exhausting ... you are an inspiring example of the idea that when talent is cultivated with hard work, good things can surely happen - best to you!
pls do more~!!!, love it. it will be a good insight and interesting view for people trying to get into the music industry, not just knowing the glory of being a musician but the amount of work needed as well.
Hey man, I've been watching your videos for a few months now and I really enjoy your videos and what you do. As a fellow bassist, I aspire to be in a position supporting myself solely on music much like yourself. Keep up the good work!
Great video! For me it's A - blue, B - brown/yellow, C - red, D - orange, E - white or black depending on the octave - F - gray - G brown Sunday - dark blue, Monday - black, Tuesday - yellow, Wednesday orange/gold, Thursday - gray, Friday - candy apple red - Saturday - gold like ginger ale I do have perfect pitch so when I hear a song it's almost like I can see the changes. Names have colors. I mix up certain names like Greg and Dave because they are both orange 😂
Wow so busy! A really cool glimpse into your week, and with killer editing for a vlog on top! Thanks for uploading this Adam, you're one of my favourite content creators on youtube!
Awesome vid! I'm currently on tour with a singer/songwriter in NYC, and we play at the Bitter End on Wednesday! It looks like a fantastic venue. We just played tonight at the Shapeshifter Lab, maybe you've heard of it, theyapparently have some great jazz shows. Anyway, its an honor to play at the same venue as a musician of your caliber. Love your vids, keep em coming!
I am totally amazed about how much value does music have in your place. I could bet my head that in a lot of countries, mine - Chile - included, most of the places and events you gigged (weddings, yoga sessions, restaurants, etc.) just play pre-recorded music for saving money - as bands are seen more as an expense rather than an investment -, and also because of the general view of music as an 'art' -which means 'something that should not be paid for'-.
Love your lessons. Love this one on reality......making good music is hard, making a living at is also hard, and there's a helluva a lot of talented people out there. But You look like you are having fun.
It's kind of the great equalizer that all over the nation we're all playing Uptown Funk and Can't Fight the Feeling in our respective Wedding Band gigs. Man, you do a lot on a lot of different instruments! Kudos for the Maximum Hustle! 👍
thank you for this! anyone living this life in their home town anywhere can feel a little bit better about the fact that it looks like this EVERYWHERE :D what's different is the local music styles you need to nail and perform sometimes more often than you'd like and of course THE PAY... veery diffrent depending on where you live, meaning it's always a lot or too little for whoever you're talking to from outside of your country, or even outside of your city :) Adam, your content is among the best music-related content out there, seriously. You use Mainstage! I would love to watch you make some patches, talk about resources you use, or what to do when trying to replicate a sound from scratch. My band just added "Something Just Like This" to our set and while I'm satisfied with the patch I created, I feel like it would be better if I had a better understanding of Alchemy or how to manipulate synths in general.
Being stuck in an office all day SUCKS ... but honestly, i am very glad i got that Comp Sci degree. :) I played with 3 bands when i lived in NYC and it was a LOT of work for little reward. LA wasn't much better, but at least you could park.
LoL this just came up in my recommended videos so I thought it was new. I finished watching and said "Man, his covers band plays a lot of tired stuff!" and then I looked and the video is from 2016. LoL great video man. Love your stuff. Haven't been watching you very long but it's all killer and informative! Thank you!
Do you practice photography at all? The fourth shot in is really great! The frame within a frame, the exposure, the bagpipe artist creating depth. It's a cool shot that you don't see in a lot of non photo/film vlogs. It's kind of like the argument for reading music--which I'm now learning to do after a long break from playing bass. Anybody with a camera with auto exposure or even an iPhone can create a compelling photo on accident, but understanding the exposure triangle and composition will help you create photos deliberately rather than just shooting a bunch and keeping the ones that happened to turn out right. Kind of like when you talked about asking yourself if you like a certain note, but having to fumble and search all over for that note due to a lack of understanding. I enjoy the vlogs keep up the good work!

As a non-professional musician I cannot wrap my mind around playing so many instruments so well. I can play guitar, bass, and Piano, but I don't excel at any one. Just a solid 3 stars on all of those instruments. You on the other hand have some really well-cultivated skills on all of those instruments. It's fascinating to see someone switching instruments with no problem. To someone that is not a professional it seems very similar to someone speaking different languages. On Monday you speak English, on Tuesday French, and Wednesday German. On Thursday you play bass, Friday is piano, and Saturday is the guitar. Just mesmorizing.
It seems that Adam only played bass for most of his life and spent a long time getting to a high level with it, so when he approaches a new instrument (especially guitar) his practice habits and routines are informed by the process of becoming a skillful bass player, so he can advance pretty quickly with it
Hi Adam, thanks for the vlog (it nice to see what your professional life is like, this was interesting. Good editing also. More vlogs in the future?). Yoga class with live music, fun ;). It's nice to watch videos made by people who are passionate about what they do :)
Awesome video Adam! Really inspiring to get an inside look as to what kind of different activities professional musicians do to make a living. On a different note, could you maybe talk a little bit about movie composition as a profession? (assuming you have some knowledge in that area). Thanks!
Really nice perspective on what it's like to be a full-time musician! It does seem like it can be quite daunting at times, too. I see that being a multi-instrumentalist does help out quite a bit. It's hard to believe you keep up with such busy weeks. Really interesting video ! How long did it took before you had such schedule ? Also I'd like to know the time you've spent learning mixing music ? The productions and mixing of Sungazer are pretty good (even if I find a little overcompressed, but I guess it's from your mastering ?). As an ascending musician and recording/mixing engineer, I find it pretty hard to get a network to regularly work with, with self-production and home studio getting more and more accessible ? What would you recommand for a young sound guy who'd like to stand out a bit ? (Other than good sounding recordings of course, even if that will always be the most important). Sorry Adam that's a lot of questions, thank you !
As a teenage New Yorker chasing that dream of being a musician, this helped. Thanks a bunch!
Well, you already got the "Living in New York" part down which is more than I have. But yeah, I would love to be a full time musician there
