The Chinese Spring Festival is the perfect time for cultural discovery and making new connections, and "TikTok refugees" who have moved to social media platform RedNote after the U.S. threatened to ban TikTok cannot get enough of it. In this edition of The Hub, CGTN's Wang Guan talks to Travis Phifer, Jeremy Barker, and Jaybill McCarthy, American content creators and users who have been exploring Chinese culture and sharing their journeys online. "It doesn't feel like the internet," says Jaybill, describing the kindness and friendliness he finds on RedNote. Barker reckons he has learned "way more" about China on RedNote. "Everything bad we have been told about China over the years is a projection of the U.S. itself," he remarks. Meanwhile, Travis describes his "amazing experience" on RedNote as "without the hate, the trolling and the constant advertising" he saw on other platforms.

I think that a lot of Chinese media is more respectful, and certainly much less graphic, thankfully. Oh, yes, and a lot less advertising.
And then a lot of information in the US concerning China has been very biased, distorted, often deliberate negative propaganda to manipulate people's opinions about China.
It is such a relief to see more about China, the Chinese people and what a wonderful place it is.

I was among the first and it's been pretty great. In the first days there was no translator. 😅 the early days were chaos and so much fun me and my wife were laughing for days. 🎉😂

i was there then too (even though I'm from New Zealand I still left Tiktok when they implemented the ban) and it was such a great feeling seeing XiaoHongShu add the translation feature for us all. I'm actually so surprised how much i've loved that app this past week or so. I needed to get back to practicing Mandarin, its been 10years since i left high school and stopped learning it, and I went to XHS to learn more common phrases, so I dont sound like a walking textbook when i speak hahaha XD

The Chinese have been admiring the United States and its people for a long time. There is nothing wrong for the Americans to admire the Chinese people and culture, although some of them remain critical and unwilling. Together we prosper, together we excel.

If you're not familiar, look up "supermarket diplomacy" during the cold war.
The US basically just did reverse supermarket diplomacy on themselves by accident.

The Chinese calendar is indeed the lunar calendar which is based on the orbit of the moon around the Earth. The term "Chinese New Year" is only applicable to China and Chinese descendants around the world, while the term "Lunar New Year" applies to the above plus all other countries which use the lunar calendar as their traditional/religious calendar, such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Korea.

The best part [and I don't use twatterX or anything like that anyway plus it wasn't banned in Europe, in fact Europeans were celebrating that it was finally a channel they could use and enjoy] was that the ban did more to prove Chinese govt claims about the US than they could ever have dreamed. I've seen so many claims in various videos about RedNote saying that people in China genuinely thought that what they were told about how bad the US really is was nothing more than govt propaganda. Only to discover by talking to people from the US that it actually wasn't, it was not only all true but that it didn't even give the whole picture of how bad life really is there [health industry -US- vs health care -rest of the world, the number of shootings compared to the majority of the rest of the world, quality of food in the US compared to the rest of the world and little things like that] compared to nearly every other country in the world. Oddly it is an own goal like that - from the US govt - that you can't even hope to achieve for informing your own citizens just how much better they really do have it than in the US.
ps any chance your lovely long trains to Europe could possibly include passenger coaches at some stage, would love to visit China but prefer train travel to plane travel.
