    This looks to be the same setup as my O28. I actually did away with the points all together, bought an O29 coil, and it was a perfect fit! Runs soooo much better now. Thanks for the videos as usual Leon!

    Great way to bring life back into these classic saws. Seeing as a fair amount of parts are no longer available from Stihl for this vintage of saw. Great job 👍

    You do really good work Leon. So after 20+ years of sitting idle she's ready to work again...that's great!

    That saw has the 2-screw mount recoil, there was also a 3-screw mount. The 032 series was essentially the same saw but with a bigger displacement, 3cc bigger I think. The flywheel side crankcase half is also different. The 031/032 was available with electronic or with the points system. As for that module I think on some brands there was reverse polarity so you had to check that. Stihl made a bracket to mount that module to the coil. I always timed those saws, pain in the butt but worth it.

    Do these old 031AV's have a spark arrestor? My muffler has only one exhaust port that's about 1 inch wide, so I pointed a flashlight in the hole but can't see a mesh or screen so I'm thinking it doesn't have it.

    Craziest thing ever I'm working on a 031 AV at the moment my name is Larry so when you kept saying my name I was like what is this a omen lol freaking me out man I wish I could afford to pay somebody to work on my saws LOL

      Interesting idea! I didn't think it would trigger properly being that far from the flywheel. If I ever run across another of these, I'll give it a try!

      @@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair does not matter as long as you run ground wire from chip to coil ground the chip is not the ground just the wire on chip to ground

    Atom ignition modules seem to work at least initially on many applications I don't know about reliability.

    Great video. I have a hot spark and good fuel, but saw won't run much less fire. Never seen this in any engine, any suggestions? Many thanks.

    Not a bad idea were to put the ignition chip. The Dolmar 114 has a module like the 031 same problem same fix just done 2 recently. Good catch on the 026 great job. Always a pleasure

    Hey Leon! I have a 031 AV Electronic that has lost spark. I believe my model has the crescent shaped trigger module under the flywheel. Can I use one of those "chips" that has one connection spade or do I need to get the style you used that has two?

    I have the same problem with the 031s with points. I have been told the only fix is a new coil. I bought 2 coils from idr where and they were for the electronic versions. The seller said to remove flywheel key and backup flywheel 1 in and torque flywheel nut 30 foot lbs.i never tried that so lm stuck with these stupid coils!

      @@wesleycallison2079 coils are hard to come by look on e bay there is a guy that guarantees some for 60 days or exchange double check the small wire that is riveted on maybe broke inside or loose very common good luck you can grind rivet off and use a bolt to put back together

    PUT IT IN AIR BOX VERY EAST JUST MAKE SURE TO RUN GD. WIRE FROM CHIP TO ONE OF THE COIL MT BOLTS I USED THE BACK ONE TOWARDS REAR OF SAW put in ft. right side of air box drill 1 hole bring bolt in from outside air box towards carburetor. area nice flat area there running up and down right side upper section chip just fits in nicely

    Words of wisdom, that long kill wire to the switch can ground out b/c of it's location. I always would incase it in fuel line cut length-wise.

    where can I get a coil for my 031av????

  • @roberthouse1352

    how do you expect that wire tie to hold up with all the heat?

    • @LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair
      @LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair  5 років тому

      If there's enough heat to cook a wire tie, there's bigger issues with the saw. Homelite used a wire tie std on their 360 coils...still good 40 years later.

    Is this the same as the 020av sthil

    • @LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair
      @LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair  5 років тому

      I'm afraid I don't know; I'eve never worked on an 020AV. But if the 020 has a trigger module under the flywheel, this would likely work.

    I have found it is a much better fix on these old Stihls to fix the points if at all possible, than put an electronic module on them.

    I put my last one in the air box across from the carburetor. Of course then you'll have to ground the airbox to the engine..
