I worked at a "hospital" called Calderstones near Whalley ( pronounced Wha' lley as I wall) it was a hospital that provided care for learning difficulties "patients" quite a vast complex. It is now demolished. The high fence you followed was the perimeter fence to the west of that establishment. Loved the blog by the way.
Ever thought of mapping out the centre point of the various centre points to assertain the centre of the centre of all the various versions of Britain?
Hey up again mate! Funny this. Near where I live in Burton, just a few miles away is a little hamlet called Short Heath near Overseal in South Derbyshire that boasts it’s the centre of England. But nearby is the village of Appleby Parva that also boasts it’s the centre...🤔🤷🏻♂️ Either way, growing up living in the Midlands gives me a good sense of geographical location lol Like I’m personally of the opinion that the North of England is everything between Junction 28 of the M1 and the border with Scotland. Which is debatable, but it’s a damn sight better than Londoners who think the North of England begins at Watford. 😑😂
I live in Burnley and the consensus here is the centre of Britain isn't Whalley but Cromwell's Bridge near Hurst Green (not far from Stoneyhurst College)
That metal fence in the fields near Whalley is to do with the Calderstones hospital it's formed the boundary around the hospital land, you must have come from The Cresent off Mitton road, them houses were built for hospital staff. What is left of the original hospital is a shadow of what was there but I know this as my family had a history of working there while it was a Mental Institution, my granddad lived most of his life around the hospital living in one of the terraces, Queen Mary Terrace, on the main road, he was the main gardener for the whole of the hospital grounds. And my aunt lived further up the road on the next block of terraces up by the north entrance. I never knew the field just south of the hospital was the center of Great Britain, it was believed locally and by the queen that about a mile away to the east that Brockhall Village (Yet another old site of a mental institution) was/is the center of Great Britain. As for the owner of the field, it looks like the farmhouse is off Nethertown close.
I recently found your channel and slowly catching up. I come from Accrington, which you mention in this video. The google centre of GB ignores the outlying islands and so I think is most accurate, and is right near me so I would say that! The place is called Lang-ho, and is near Whalley - pronounced Wall-E. Not Wally, you wally. :) The Leeds and Liverpool canal feels like it cuts the island up in the middle, so maybe the centre is more like Burnley way? I feel Pendle Hill is near the centre; where the witches come from. I think you did a great job to cover all the options in this video, and I like how you use the maps to give us a feel for the location.
Genius Ollie! A highly objective and well researched video that was also entertaining too. Your light years better than any other presenters I watch on youtube😀👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Actually you look like an old friend of mine who lives in Leeds too. Not trying to embarrass Ollie old bean but just appreciate the amount of work and research you put into these videos for little or no reward. Salute👍👌
Hi Ollie, Another great video. Really enjoyable. Love all the details, and very well researched. You are so watchable. Thank you so very much. Take care.
The center of England was said to be Bister in the Midlands. Massive military stores, ware houses , where establish there so as to be furthest from any invading force. John
Hi Ollie, Great idea! Funny how something so simple turned out to be so flippin complicated! You did really well though. Love the use of graphics...a picture paints a thousand words and all that. Those railings around that farmer's field were a bit over the top, they looked Victorian to me, though I did wonder if they went up around the time folk were demanding the right to roam the countryside? Anyway, great work, much appreciated, loved the banjo too! Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine!!!
My God i didn't know that lol, Haltwhistle, bleedin ell i drove through it loads of times, you learn great things off great channels like your's, and life, I should really have several diplomas by now lol, I would have guessed that the centre was North Wales, don't know why
The centre of Britain, indeed the centre of the universe, is whatever room my sister happens to be in at the time. Or so you would think from her behaviour....
Great video, thanks for sharing. One small problem with you conclusion. Whalley isn't in Yorkshire, although it is on the way. As we all know, Yorkshire is God's country and God is the is the centre of all things. Ipso facto the centre of everything has to be in Yorkshire. :>) PS, if that wasn't enough of a Yorkshire bias, I love Manchester so much spent most of my youth there, I think it should be Yorkshire's chief city. All of which is a leg pull! Have you any plans for continuing the coastline walk? I was trying to remember the first person to do it. Was it John Merril?
Haha thanks, just seen this comment now. You're right of course, Yorkshire is the centre of all things! No I was planning to cycle the coast of Britain in stages but I'll have to see how the pandemic plays out before getting another train to Scotland 👍

How about identifying the centre of Greater Manchester?
Very intersting
Music too loud
You know that thing, that the center of the universe is wherever you are? Same thing here...
Ta.

Enjoy your vids how about doing the history of oldham
Thanks. That's a good one, i might look into that, thanks 👍
The presenter sounds like Gary Neville
You’ve given this far too much thought lol, everyone knows Barnsley is the centre of the universe
Brilliant. Finding centre of Great Britain. Centre of the World must be Etihad Stadium
