Regenexx Alternative to Knee Meniscus Surgery / Meniscectomy

  • Knee meniscus surgery, or meniscectomy, is one of the most common orthopedic surgeries in the world, but there is little or no evidence that it actually helps patients and it often results in early onset arthritis. Regenexx regenerative procedures are a non-surgical approach to help heal meniscus tears.

    I AM EXTREMELY LUCKY. I just had a simple meniscus repair and was able to keep all of it.

    This is all so confusing. Does anyone have answers at all or are we just doomed ? One person says operate and get well. Another says don’t operate and do PT. And now all this stuff about stem cells? Who can afford that? I have a torn meniscus and I’m literally not even sure if there’s anyway around this.

      Thank you for your comment. Finding the treatment that is best for you can include these 2 main considerations: first, what are your preferences and goals for treatment and second, what types of procedures are you a good candidate for. With some types of meniscus tears, if they're left alone they may heal on their own. For others, the body can use a little more help to help itself. The last consideration should be surgery as it removes parts of the meniscus, altering the original biomechanics of the knee and often leading to further degeneration over time. If you've been told surgery is your only option, you may wish to consider a second opinion. Studies show 88% of patients who seek a second opinion go home with a new or refined diagnosis regenexx.com/second-opinion/ Knowing the exact condition of your meniscus and having a detailed evaluation with a specialist can help you know all of your options for treatment and what your results from the treatment(s) you're a good candidate for may be.

    Would you recommend an MRI first? I tried to get an MRI last year & my insurance denied my claim. I'm not sure what to do now..... The orthopedic was less than helpful however they did send my an office visit payment for $343 & I was only there for around 30mins.

    What about a bucket handle tear of the meniscus? How would not having a surgery in that case be better?

    • @Regenexx
      @Regenexx  2 роки тому

      Hello, thank you for your question. Bucket handle tears are some of the most common meniscus tears we treat. Tears that occur in the red zone of your meniscus have the best blood circulation, and often heal the best with regenerative orthopedic procedures. The entire inner rim of the medial meniscus can be torn in what is called a bucket handle tear. These tears usually occur in an area of good blood supply in the meniscus. Why consider avoiding meniscus surgery? Research shows that surgery for a torn meniscus is overprescribed and often no more effective than physical therapy. Unfortunately, patients are not always informed of the low success rate of these procedures. Whether patients have a partial meniscus “clean-up” (a piece is surgically removed) or a complete meniscectomy, outcomes are often unsuccessful. Both procedures change knee biomechanics and may later result in knee arthritis. You can read more details and see before and after MRIs and outcomes data for Regenexx nonsurgical procedures here regenexx.com/conditions-treated/knee/meniscus/

    Hey Regenexx, I have the following conditions :
    Anterior cruciate ligament tear in the mid segment with partial fragmentation.
    Medial meniscus body grade III / bucket handle tear.

      Thank you for your comment. Did you know Regenexx PRP treatments, commonly called Regenexx SCP, are very different from what other providers are able to do? This difference is based on the lab data we've observed for over 15 years, how a Regenexx physician evaluates a condition to determine the procedure type for the specific condition or injury, and the on-site laboratory where we count the cells and know the dose required for each patient's treatment. To learn why Regenexx PRP is different and review the data behind our procedure, please visit regenexx.com/blog/prp-injections/

    I am 46 years old.. I was so active and used to play basketball and run alot. I did ACL operation in 2013. Also endoscopy in 2018 and 2021 to fix meniscus tears.
    The results are not ok since I am still having it torn. Am not doing any active sports since 2017. I suffered stiffness and swelling with osteoarthritis.
    I did cortisone injection to get rid of swelling and now planning to do prp plus HA injection. I see that my choices are limited just to keep it serving me as long as possible.. any advise and thank you.

      Since the meniscus is a living tissue, there are parts that have good blood circulation, and tears in those areas heal best. Physical therapy can be effective in healing some tears, but frequently, the body needs a helping hand to facilitate and speed up the process. That’s where Regenexx’s regenerative orthopedic procedures come in.The cells in your bone marrow concentrate work at the site of your injury to promote your body’s natural healing abilities to treat the tear and avoid surgery. A Regenexx doctor would need to examine your specific condition needs to be able to discuss your candidacy for a Regenexx procedure and your likely outcome. Thank you for your question. Out of respect for each person's privacy and professionalism, we do not diagnose, assign specific medical care plans, provide candiacy for procedures, or discuss specific individual post-procedure results over social media. Diagnosis, medical treatment recommendations, and post-procedure outcomes discussions happen between a patient and their doctor. If you'd like to connect with a Regenexx doctor for evaluation, please let us know and we will assist. You can also call a Regenexx office location direct with any questions you may have.
