- With this Kontakt Track Template you will have 16 tracks for recording MIDI which go into Kontakt on separate channels, and then 20 stereo audio outputs (16 normal outputs, 4 aux) to separate tracks in REAPER.

This is exactly how I set up my template as well with Kontakt. I don't make the Top folder like you did. After I get the initial 16 MIDI/Audio set-up, I copy/paste the whole set for each section i.e. Piano, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Vocals, Choirs, Trailer Hits, etc.. After all those are loaded, I then save as a template. Of course in mine, I have Omnisphere set up, and 1 track for video if needed. I keep the VST folder for each section without the instruments, so it loads faster and keeps things flexible. If I have any unused Midi/Audio tracks for each section when done, I just hide them.
I've learned doing it this way as you have shown, you can't freeze the Midi track, but have to freeze the Audio track, while muting the Midi track.

should be able to multichannel freeze the track with Kontakt. the audio routing will remain but the audio file will be on the kontakt track.

With Kontakt 5 the outputs within the Kontakt rack were assigned to 'Kt. St. 1' by default, meaning all sends from my MIDI tracks were going to one output. To fix this and make the MIDI inputs correspond with the audio outs (i.e. Kontakt 5 MIDI 3 to be sent to Kt. St. 3) I had to change the output of each instrument in the Kontakt rack (within Kontakt itself). To do this globally, open Kontakt, go to Outputs --> Presets / Batch Configuration --> Batch Functions --> Clear Output Section and Create one individual channel for each loaded instrument. Every time you load an instrument to the rack you'll have to do this. Took me a while to figure this out...

Hey, just discovered your channel and found the presentation very useful. I've noticed however that on default tracks I can select record in either the midi track or mixer and they both will be in record. With your method record can only be enabled and used from the midi track. From the mixer, record has no effect. I'm sure I'm over looking something.

Brilliant, but I think one thing missing which was puzzling me. I couldn't understand why - no matter what Midi track I used, the audio came out of audio track one. Until I went back to Kontakt and for the second instrument, manually told it to go to output 2... and the third instrument, told it to go to Output 3 etc. Somehow, I thought this would all happen automatically. (Thanks to Brandraven below for also pointing this out.) A thousand thanks for the video. I'd never have worked this out on my own.

my god .. I literally only use kontakt with FL because it seemed simpler but this changes everything
How did you get the vsti (64 out) version? That's what I would use when I was using Kontakt 5, but now with 6 I don't see that option. Only AU Kontakt.
thx for the template ... is it only for drums ? I have damage loop designer from heavy-city seams like there is no possibility in that effect
Any chance you’d be willing to further this discussion, and demonstrate building a handful of instruments in Kontakt, then bouncing the MIDI data to Audio (as stems)? This seems to be harder than it should be. I’m a longtime ProTools user trying to figure out Reaper on my travel computer. Banging my head against the wall working on a couple projects!
at 3:40 it says on your screen "stereo 1/2 -> new track 2" etc, but for me it says "mono 1" and "mono 2" etc, despite my instance of kontakt being set up as stereo. any idea why this may be?
Also when i try to create the template step by step. The midi no. 11 to midi no. 16 triggers the sound (as i can see them in kontakt the sound is triggered), but the kt. St doesn't show up in mixer meters and i can't hear anything above 10th midi
I dont exactly use reaper. but Im having an issue. I work with orchestral instruments. I want to be able to use 100 stereo channels but the kontakt program only gives 64 and at most when creating a output template, 32-36 with monos included. Is there a way i can use 64 chanels? I mean without having to open 2-4 etc tracks of kontakt with a different preset in each?

tried it three times now and no dice. Works perfect as a single track, but the minute I try to do the multi track, following your tutorial to the letter, nothing is going to the master.
How can I add fx to one of the "Kt. st" tracks? When I try to, it seems as if the track doesn't get any input (although it does)
Sir I'm in need of some help i am a keyboardist and i have been using reaper for 3 years and this is my 1st daw and i love it a lot but i got my self a micro korg recently and it works perfectly except native instrument kontact. But that plugging works perfectly with my yamaha psr keyboard. I have tried to use this same keyboard and same vst in other daws it works but not in reaper and also i tried a m audio keystation 61 too. But it Doesn't work with native instrument at all only psr works with it

Been trying to route my GGD Modern & Massive properly in Reaper and found this video which was helpful until I realized that for some reason Reaper creates 2 to 3 fewer tracks than I told it to when I do the whole 'Build multichannel routing for outputs of selected FX' thing. I don't want templates because I want to learn and understand what's happening. Anybody with any ideas? Cheers!
Exactly what i was looking for sadly it works when you are making the template but when you create a new project from the template the routings don't work even though they are all present and correct and as I would do them if I was creating them manually one by one. Go figure
Is there a problem with adding Kontakt onto every single track that has a Kontakt MIDI instrument? For example, add new track, click add FX, Add Kontakt, go into Kontakt and pick the library, pick the instrument. And then add a new track and do the same thing again, except with a different instrument?
I constantly use this template for my projects; thankyou so much for making it available! I have one question about automation lanes: I can't find out how to place automation lanes underneath my 16 MIDI instruments; the "trim" button on the instrument MIDI tracks doesn't show all the knobs & faders that are part of the VST. I can create automation lanes in the "host automation" window within the Kontakt instance, but the lanes then stick to the Master Track. Is there any way to create automation lanes that appear right under the corresponding MIDI track? Is there something that I'm missing?
You can use the CC lanes on the MIDI tracks and that will send out to the plugin, but otherwise, plugin automation must be on the track with Kontakt.
Do you know a way to link the Midi/Output track together regarding the envelops drawn on the midi tracks? With this method you would have to do all the envelops separately on the output tracks which would be majorly inconvenient when trying to add realism to orchestral productions! If anyone knows how to do this, I'd be psyched!
MIDI CCs on the MIDI items. Kontakt automation would be on the Kontakt track.
Mix automation on the output tracks.
How do you make Reaper understand Kontakt exist? I can't get beyond step 1 because it just doesn't show Kontakt as an option in the menu.

Hi Jon, thanks a lot for this practical and efficient tutorial on kontakt. It's not the first time i'm using your guidance to setup kontakt in reaper. Unfortunately there's one thing that i can't get working and that's freezing the different midi tracks into different waves in order to mix them without putting to much strain on my cmputer system. all you can do is freeze the Kontakt track as multichannel audio.
Or set the receiving tracks to record output and do it in realtime, then disabling the instrument.

I figured it out!
From the Komplete menu, make sure the input says 1, AND the output says 1. For the next instruments, the input needs to be 2, the output 2; 3rd instrument input 3, output 3 etc. For some reason, when you add a new instrument in Komplete, the default output is the same (output 1) Hope this helps!

volume CC in the item if you want the instrument to respond, or automate the audio out track volume in the mixer

even though komplete kontrol shows as a 32-out plugin, you don't get any routing mixer. Kontakt inside KK is stereo only

I can't figure out how to use this template. Do we add the Kontakt player to the Kontakt Template track ( or the Kontak track) and then expect each instrument we add to appear in a midi track? I tried every variation but if I add the Kontakt player to the Kontakt track and then add multiple instruments to it I cannot select them individually in the tracks below, for example, if I hit the record button then all record buttons become active. Could you show an example of how you would use this? Do es each tracks midi input need to set to 1?
Well Sean..you've actually encouraged me...I think I need a tutorial to understand the tutorial! All of this just makes me realise there is a lot I do not understand about midi tracks.. I've added a piano and a woodwind instrument...but the only one I can get to play is the instrument with Midi Channel A1..I can select either instrument...but only with Midi channel A1...I don't understand how I can select a different instrument on a different channel.....
one problem though, I loaded two instruments into Kontakt, and I can't hear them. no signal is going to the master channel. record monitoring is on. maybe you can pop on and lend a hand. Thanks. or extend this video to actually adding instruments and showing that they indeed work.
If I were to have a drum kit in Kontakt, how would I be able to separate the individual drum samples where I can individually add fx to each drum? I cannot for the life of me figure this out
Totally dependent on the library. The ones from Room Sound for example have full mixers and fx built in and about 20 outputs. Others only give stereo out.

Hey. What if I need more thank 16 tracks? Should I make another kontakt virtual instrument ? What if I want to record more than 16 instruments?
limitation of Kontakt plugin version is it can only do 16 MIDI inputs. There are up to 64 audio channels out. You can have more instruments inside Kontakt than 16 if you want to trigger on the same channels.

I apologize in advance for the question I'm about to ask as it probably has a very simple explanation.... but why, after repeating the exact same steps, do I only get Mono outs? Please help a brother out.
same issue for me for some reason
so the issue is - u need to use VSTi version of Kontakt. Not VST3i. VST3i doesn't create stereo links, for some reason. It sends out only mono channels, for some reason.
This is an issue in the VST3 version. I found the solution was to download the template linked in the video description, then replace the plugin in the Kontakt VST track (the track simply called 'Kontakt') with the VST3 version (Open FX chain, right click the Kontakt VST slot > 'Replace FX...' and select the Kontakt plugin you want). You will probably find you need to still sort the Kontakt outputs with in the Konktakt interface as directed in the video (clicking the '+' button and setting the defaults etc) but I found it didn't matter that this was done after the output tracks have already been made. You then need to remember to save over the track template so you don't need to repeat these steps in future uses. Hope this helps.
