    Love it! That was a great combo. I was a very lucky chap last week.....got to fly in a Chinook, right next to the crewman on the rear ramp. Unbelievable at low level all around my local neighbourhood. That was a bucket list item ticked off. Wanted to do that since I was ten years old....now 60!! 😊

    My dog Lusus is not afraid of anything, except chinooks. When one flew over my shack he walked inside. I couldn't get over that!???? The Chinook was less than 100 feet above us and we were getting prop wash.

      They've certainly got a unique sound. Maybe it's too much for your dog, suppose if it heard it all the time they'd get used to it.

      @@DarrenEdwardsAviation they fly over the area that I live in for practice. The one I'm referring to was desert camo and low and loud . We get a lot of 130s out here also, I have a tower 🗼 on the property and that must be some kind of landmark for them. When they are low you can't hear them until their right on you.

      I live near Sikorsky and idk if they have a contract to work on them or what since Boeing makes them but every once in awhile one will come by and you KNOW it’s a chinook before you even step outside😂. Sometimes it’s the special operations one from the 160th which is pretty cool.

      My Youngest nephew is crew chief, loadmaster, maintenance, qualified for them. Word is he turned down pilot training, he's having more fun doing the several job he's doing with Chinook. He's recently transferred back to that famous and recently renamed helicopter base in Alabama, think to be an instructor maybe. I forget Fort Rucker's new name other than it starts with 'Nov ...', and the guy it is now named for flew many, many, medivac flights in Southeast Asia, and was awarded some serious medals.

I've seen a video from someone driving through the valley in their car, from that video it's really not that low, from where I am it makes it look lower. Still if I was in one of the cars as it turns the corner I'd probably wondering what the heck is going on.

    In 2019 when we had the "dodgy dam" near disaster in my town ( Whaley Bridge, High Peak ) we got so used to the sight and sound of the Chinooks coming in down Goyt Valley and dropping the super large "sandbags" into the dam "hole" to shore it up. Incredible seeing them up so close with their distinctive sound and also the incredibly skilled pilots. They basically turned round at the end of our road after each run, just amazing! Many thanks for the help, it was appreciated. Lots of folk in town still have their Chinook stickers!

    Pretty cool watching the Chinook and the Herc. It reminded me of when I was flying in my early days [In the US] I would fly my C-172 in the valleys nearby. One day, as I came around a tight corner, I began to start my climb out of the valley. Trimmed up and scanning the area I see something funny to my right. Looks like a smoke trail [not a contrail] to my 2 o'clock position. I didn't see any aircraft so I kept climbing. Still, the smoke trail is getting thicker and closer but still no aircraft sighted. I then lean WAAAAAY forward and suddenly I see a C-130 in my forward window! I realized we are on a collision course and I shoved the yoke forward to start an immediate descent. After the descent, I figured out what had happened. The reason I didn't seem him was that he was "behind" the a/c right window/door frame. Due to our both maintaining a stable flight, our approach to each other never changed so he remained hidden behind the window frame until I leaned forward. Thank God for the C-130 smoke trail. A few weeks later while downhill skiing the same valley, a C-130 flew through the valley at the same altitude I did before. Haha, I never did that again. Cell phone towers were the killer to valley flying.

    We lived near Odiham on a slight hill. The house was surrounded by many tall trees. One day a Chinook was terrain following and came right over the house, as they often do. But I don't think the pilot had allowed for both the terrain rising and the tall trees ( presumably their onboard mapping does not show trees). The engines were wound up and he climbed as hard as he could to only just miss the trees. I could look into the open ramp as he continued climbing past the trees. I was used to them but this was the lowest and loudest I had experienced.
    Maybe he really knew what he was doing and had it all planned but looked like a mistake to me as no other occasion were they that low.

      I used to fly in them a lot in Panama in the 90s. Everywhere we went down there was flying nap of the earth. They flew very close to the trees. Flying along the canal, we would fly below the decks of passing cruise ships, looking up at the waving passengers lol.
      Hueys were more fun because we could see out better, but the Chinook were faster, both flying at tree top level.

Quote from the Crew Chief “ you only have to worry if they stop leaking “ when we finally landed and he lowered the ramp we all skated down the ramp on a film of hydraulic fluid. Do Chinooks typically fly that low going into the valley? At one point it looked like he was just a few meters off the deck!

    • @DarrenEdwardsAviation
      @DarrenEdwardsAviation  Рік тому +3

      It looks a lot lower than it actually was, I've been lucky enough to watch a video from a dash cam in the valley, super cool.

      Also depends what they are practicing for. Had C-130s and chinooks going at full pelt 50ft off the ground over salisbury plains during the Afghan stuff practicing fast inserts and extractions.

    • @vgnnr38
      @vgnnr38 Рік тому +3

      Yes, depending on the area and authorisation given, flight as low as 50ft AGL is permitted. When flying concealed approach and departure, down to 10ft AGL is permitted.

    I'd love to go an spend the day there watching everything fly through, and living in the UK it wouldn't be such a bad journey, but how do you know where and when they fly? I don't want to drive for several hours just to find nothing happening...

      The days sitting on the hill can be long and very cold, but if you're lucky enough to see something go through, it's well worth it, but don't be surprised if you see nothing through though.

    • @DarrenEdwardsAviation
      @DarrenEdwardsAviation  Рік тому +2

      Thank you for watching. It's just sit and wait, just enjoy the stunning views. If an aircraft goes through, that's a bonus. Days can be very long. Wrap up warm at the bottom. If it then feels warm up the top, then you can remove clothing. it's best to have too much on than not enough.

      Gotta love those workhorses. Did 5 years in the paratrooper’s, Chinooks and C130s were what we used the most during my tour. Now 48 years later, I am still able to identify both by sound alone. They do make a lasting impression. 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡

      I live less than a mile from the US Army California National Guards (1106th) AVCRAD, I see them and Blackhawks every single day. Often the big Palm trees at the amusement park across the street get bustled about by rotor wash, sometimes they get so low you can smell the jet fuel fumes.
