There is no question de tall gearing (taller than in the 911) was engineered on purpose to avoid the competition with the bigger brother. It’s was painfully obvious with the GT4, unfortunately!
So that's how they did it. Great to know. I think this looks better than the 911, but naturally they're going to want to give you a reason to spring for the 911.
I went to the Porsche driving experience in LA last week and drove the Cayman S. The car handles brilliantly and is plenty fast for a small road course. I placed my order yesterday. For those that may not know he is driving at the PDE for this review
An old friend of mine just bought this car like two weeks ago and he told me that is one of the best cars your can buy. Last weekend he raced against a M2 and he told me it was a close race but he actually won (he has the S model). It is surprise how good the car is made, the great balance of the chassis, the mid engine, the 7-speed PDK, how agile is... A little car but its amazing!!
+esteban _Any_ car that costs more than $70,000 should be damn good and well made. And it should really come with a 6-cylinder, at least, for that kind of money. This expensive car does not. That's a problem for many.
Yeah I'm a big fan of the Cayman as a well balanced drivers (manual) car. But the 4-cyl is a big let down. I mean $70k for a Subaru engine in a mid engine car with a pretty plasticy interior....ehh...it could be better.
+Dolby Indeed, it is overpriced. Especially when you compare it to other Porsche 4-cyl cars from the past. Typically, they were priced at about $35k in today's money. Whether it's a '50s Speedster, '60s 356 Coupe or a 944 from the early '80s. Heck, even the very top of the line Porsche in the mid 1950s, a 550/1500 RS Spyder which is essentially a race car, went for around $56k in today's money.
A M2 is no competition for a Cayman S...! This is a midengined real sportscar with a perfect balance, the BMW is just a little two door coupe with a heavy inline six engine in the front, based on a mass-produced car, which was tuned for being a sportscar.
Just about every “auto journalist” complains about the exhaust sound and how the four cylinder boxer is inferior to the 981. I totally upgraded my 2018 base Cayman by forgoing all of those overpriced Porsche addons that just raise your car payments and not your car performance by doing two things. First, installed a VR Tuning piggyback ECU and got an extra 50 rear whp that cost $800. Second, added a Fabspeed cat back exhaust for $1,850, which makes the 718 sound like a small block V8. A far superior sports car for under $2,700.
I test drove this car to benchmark as I had a '07 Cayman S, it was ok but in the end I bought a ND Miata Club Sport I felt the Miata was just more fun for half the price and with the manual it seemed just as peppy as the 718. I will say the Porsche was very refined and can be used everyday."Yeshua/Jesus is the way"
Interesting. Miata is probably more fun at low speeds but I wonder if the Porsche would be more fun at higher speeds. I agree that I don't necessarily want refined cars because they take away form teh sportyness.
Porsche definitely has the speed advantage up top no doubt about it but with the PDK it didn't feel fast it felt peppy but no faster than my lexus f sport. So Carlos is right about the long gearing.
I have a 2006 Cayman S with a 3.8. I test drove the 2017 Cayman S. I was surprised how nice the 4 sounded, but you are correct, the flat six sounds way better. I was surprised that I could not tell it had a turbo. there was no lag and I could not hear anything that indicated there was a turbo back there. the pdk is amazing...but after 10 minutes of driving I was utterly bored already. if you buy one of these, get a manual, and get the S. these cars are like buying a tv. you ever heard of anyone complaining they bought a TV that was too big? same with this car...the extra size of the engine and horsepower is worth it. you will regret buying the base model. funny thing too totally unrelated, with my 3.8, I get 32mpg at 65mph in 6th gear all day long.
7:14 No, I don't win because I still have to listen to so called 'purist' twits complaining about the sound of this engine nearly 2 years into its existence. The 718 is a better car than its predecessor in every way that matters to performance, so when will the incessant whining about the engine sound stop?
I absolutely agree with you. I've had mine for a year and even drivers of 911s and the old 981 show appreciation - the 718 is streets ahead of the 981 and once the engine has broken in after 2k miles the sound is very aggressive at high revs just quietest at low cruising speeds. Luv it mate!
Nice review, I must confess I love this brutish aggressive sound of four cylinder. I have Cayenne with 6 cylinder and I have to say it is génius what they did in Porsche. For me as guy from Europe who watch motosport mostly in Europe it was allways mostly related to the 4 cylinder engines and it is natural for me to see 4 cylinder in sport car. To Cayenne is better 6 cylinder because it is SUV and heavy car and it makes perfect sense but Cayman is light car which needs to have a light turbocharged engine.
Might seem apples to oranges, but I don't think so. I'd rather a Miata or a BRZ/86. It's about pure driving fun, and I think I'd rather hustle and ring out those N/A engines than be numbed by the 718's clinical power delivery from its turbo.
Alan Bowers Only like 5 more torque though. I wouldn't expect a much higher 0-60 if at all. Maybe higher trap. If you want a faster miata, bolt ons or supercharger would be way to go for few grand. I don't think the 2019 is gonna be the answer.
PenCrisis 3lb/ft actually, but that puts it at 151 in total, which is only 4 fewer than a 2002 S2000 or like 10 less than an 06, all while weighing nearly 500lbs less. The proof will be in the pudding though, so hopefully it lives up to the hype.
Sergio Aguirre I don't care how fast the Cayman is or much character you think it has. You don't understand why I'd prefer a BRZ or a Miata, so don't argue with me or anyone else about it.

Thank you, Carlos Lagos, for saying that the sound is an important part of the driving experience! This is so true and why my next fun car must be a great sounding one. The 718 twins are no doubt fantastic drivers cars but that soundtrack IS somewhat of a letdown at this pricepoint.
Matthew Gaither i have this car and i have to say that the sound is fantastic, I mean i cant compare because it’s my first car, i am 21 but my father has a gt3 and this car sounds amazing!! But i have to say, for my first car it’s freakin‘ amazing and it looks so fantastic. For people which have no plan, they see my 718 and gt3 from my dad and saying my is more beautiful from looking, so for this price it is a absolutely nice cool car
@@RuudGullitNed Funnily enough I just bought one of these and I love it. "they lack of quality and engeneering"? the corvette is considered one of the most reliable sports cars of all time(specially the c5-6s!): dashboard-light.com/vehicles/Resources/Images/class/Sports_car/InClassQIR.png?v=4 There's a reason they have some of the highest residual values out of anything in its class. Sure the interior is garbage compared to a porsche, but you aren't buying a corvette for the inside amenities.
I actually like it and I actually like it as very base version stripped down of useless extras. I won't purchase neither the PDK (6 speed manual is the one to have) neither the "Sportchrono" pack as this car was equipped. Save a lot of cash for having more fun - win win for me. I do like the sound still but would like to have a limited slip diff at least... and would go for the 718 Boxter probably...
I recommend test driving the PDK version as well, you might be surprised at how good it is (I'm a stick shift addict myself, but everyone who tests the PDK gearbox loves it!)
U know guys who grow up with a Dad that drove a 911turbo, his 4cyl criticism may be valid. Where as those of us who learnt to drive in a Kcar, &cherish memories of thier first car, an 11 year old VW gti; less so...
What an idiotic review. The 718 is considerably faster right through the range than the wheezy old six and it handles appreciably better. You wouldn’t notice the power on a track because you’re at peak revs. You only hear the engine when you’re flat out, so not most of the time. Track tests are irrelevant. I’ve just spent a week driving mine up and down mountain passes in Spain. Just fabulous.
I have seen so many reviews kissing Porsches' ass but this one, perfection, because what you are saying it's all true. I can't stand the engine sound but getting one tomorrow because it's within my poor woman's budget (don't want a 911 anyways though). It will be my first and maybe my last. I jus want one because it looks different than all the hideous looking so call cars out here today. Yuck.
What’s with the west coast customs “pimp my ride” music in your transitions? Seems cheap and childish. Idk how you got Carlos Lago and use transition music made in garage band lol
Giovanni true, however EPA constantly reformulates their test parameters so those numbers can’t be directly compared. This is also a new car, and being heavier due to one reason or another also makes it problematic to compare to the previous Cayman. Last, I believe C&D has tested these and found they surpassed EPA figures.
As a previous generation owner, I totally agree with this review. The negatives explained keep me from buying one. I sold my 981 (when the baby comes, the Porsche goes), however regret it and kinda want a replacement. The 781 is just not the same...even the sharper body lines are cold. So many new cars are unemotional and dead feeling despite being fast and making good marketing numbers.
I think he’s saying it sounds like a John Deere. I own one and it’s growls at low rpm and roars when you redline it. The sound issue is way overblown. Car has terrific driving dynamics and plows the fields like nobody’s business.
Way too expensive for what it is. By the time you put any decent options on it you are spending over $80k. Sorry but even if this is slightly faster on a track I'd rather get an M2 and save $20k plus have better equipment.
You know what sounds "granular" and "coarse"? The sound of the tires with you constantly drifting onto the rumble strips in one of the most precise-handling cars out there, proving you can't drive worth crap.
Alan Bowers mm yea bro that question is as dumb as you asking me if i would take this porsche if someone given it to me free. but anyways... good talking to you
Ugh...why review with an automatic? Want a car to drive itself get a Tesla, this is supposed to be a drivers car. Always get the manual. Otherwise, great review!
You are correct, although that will have more to do with the fact that probably all cars will be electric, and automated within 10-20 years. Proper manual drivers cars will be very valuable.
Sergio Aguirre 1) You are wrong in your assertion about manuals not being able to handle torque. Besides the fact that internally most DCT's are very similar to manuals, there are plenty of high HP/TQ manual cars like the Viper, and the new 755hp/715ft-lb Corvette ZR1. The Hennessey Venom GT with 1340hp runs a manual tranmission as well. 2) If the GT-R was proof of DCT's being the future, then why is it slower than several manual trans equiped cars that are much less expensive? 3) If you are willing to sacrifice 40% of the control, connection, and experience for 0.2 seconds at the drag strip, and less than half a second a lap on a track (that most people will never go on), then will you sacrifice the other 60% and give up the steering wheel when an automated car can lap a track faster than you can?
it's kinda sad the newer base cayman is actually slower than a 2010 base cayman all because they switched out the engine. Oh well, at least the value of this car will tank and it will be far more affordable than previous generations!
Geez, the guy complaining about the tall gearing while his hands are over the paddle shifters. Also, if you’re so concerned about the tall shifting you can get this car in a manual transmission. Duh!
If you compare the Cayman to the Corvette it is hard to justify the price of the Cayman. You can pick up a C7 Corvette for about $25K less than a similarly equipped Cayman. The Corvette has better performance and beautiful sounding V8. MSRP of the 2 cars does not tell the full story. Corvettes can be had for about 10K less than sticker and every Cayman you see on a lot has an extra 10 or 15K in options. That's an expensive name plate.
I think you just don't understand this car. It's a base version. The cheapest car from Porsche you can get. Of course you will get something more exciting, if you have the money and a little bit more time until its introduction. The new 718 Cayman GT4 will soon have the engine, everything is waiting for: A de-tuned version from the 911 GT3 flat six! This will be the absolute pinnacle in this car segment of smaller and engaging sportscars. Totally balanced with a high reving engine, which is related to Porsche Cup race engines, and which is certainly faster than a 911 Carrera S!
Just take the sports exhaust for this flat four cylinder turbo engine and it will sound very good when you rev it up! Here in Germany, the drivers of such a base version 2 liter flat four turbo 718 Caymans won't have a problem with the "sound" of this engine, because they drive this car like it should be driven! I don't know what Porsche drivers in the US are doing with such a 718 Cayman..., only cruising with 2000 rpm?? That's quite idiotic! This car is for driving an reving it up!
That engine note is awful. They ruined the cureent Cayman with these engines. The farting sound belongs on a hot hatch, not a mid engine sports car. Not everything is a out power. I'd gladly trade the performance for the sound of that sweet sounding six cylinder. I'll trade that 1mpg advantage
The Tremek manual in the Camaro's are very nice...should have considered that first. Alan - The Camaro is actually surprisingly adept. Maybe not quite as refined, but this video shows the Porsche has just as much plastic inside as the Camaro.
Leave it to Carlos to exceptionally explain the nuances of this a BASE Cayman. How he described lifting of the throttle slightly to get the rear to lightly understeer to push front through a corner was we exquisite.
That's just basic stuff that applies to any car to a degree. Lifting off the throttle in any car will provide the front tires with more grip due to the weight shifting more to the front and off of the rear.
I own one and drive it every day. I think the engine sounds better the harder you push it. What a delightful, beautiful, gem of a car and what a smug attitude this guy has. He even short-shifts to avoid going to redline? Hard to believe, Carlos.
Carlos the jackass

New Cayman GTS 4.0 should compete very well with 911s.

I live in Wisconsin. Is this car practical as everyday car with winter tires for snow?
Carlos baby!
is this the base model with no options at all? or did it have some options that you didn't mention?
It had a few options, like PTV, adaptive dampers, 19-in wheels, Sport Chrono, etc
A balanced review!
I’m bored with hearing about the engine note. The car is brilliant. Period.
Really nice but cannot help wanting the Alfa 4c
I have seen so many reviews kissing Porsches' ass but this one, perfection, because what you are saying it's all true. I can't stand the engine sound but getting one tomorrow because it's within my poor woman's budget (don't want a 911 anyways though). It will be my first and maybe my last. I jus want one because it looks different than all the hideous looking so call cars out here today. Yuck.
Thank you
You didn’t use the PaddleShifters ‘ 😤😤
You have the engine running but the tach is at zero for the first half of video
What’s with the west coast customs “pimp my ride” music in your transitions? Seems cheap and childish. Idk how you got Carlos Lago and use transition music made in garage band lol
Too subjective a review - a lot of “I don’t like”. Also sounds like he thinks he knows better than the engineers who developed and designed the 718.
Ben Harrison A review implies subjectivity. If you want an objective assessment of a car, go read the instructional manual.
Really wish Porsche kept a 2.8-3L 6 cylinder and just used small turbos.
They gave up the gave up thr cayman soul for profit margins.
BigHeadClan I think they gave it up for fuel economy reasons, not necessarily profits.
Alan Bowers But he just said there wasn't much fuel economy gain. In the real-world, there probably isn't any.
Alan Bowers real world next to no mpg gains.

Has Lago been here a while?
As a previous generation owner, I totally agree with this review. The negatives explained keep me from buying one. I sold my 981 (when the baby comes, the Porsche goes), however regret it and kinda want a replacement. The 781 is just not the same...even the sharper body lines are cold. So many new cars are unemotional and dead feeling despite being fast and making good marketing numbers.
Is that plastic on armrest on a Porsche?
Demar Gio no, it is not.
The lack of being able to access the engine is a hard pass for me.
For the sound alone I have never considered this car, instead I went for the previous gen which I think looks better and sounds a world better
Loves the sound of his own voice. "it sounds agricultural". uhh ok whatever man
Jesus Preciado fair enough lol. I think it means it sounds like a droning appliance rather than a precise instrument, but I could be wrong.
I think he’s saying it sounds like a John Deere. I own one and it’s growls at low rpm and roars when you redline it. The sound issue is way overblown. Car has terrific driving dynamics and plows the fields like nobody’s business.
I’d rather listen to the engine, than this guys voice.
The car sounds like a Honda though.
Macwylee, Subaru, really sad!
Does it feel nice to your fingertips?
MORE LAGO!!! MORE LAGO!!! MORE LAGO!!! MORE LAGO!!! MORE LAGO!!! MORE LAGO!!! MORE LAGO!!!
A little too much complaining about the engine noise and zero info on cargo storage, which should be in a review.
Awkward camera work....as much as I love Carlos, this is a car channel....not a modeling channel.
once i heard a 4poper in porsche nah fuck that nothing replaces the sound of the flat 6 shame
Tall gearing?!? My 718 Cayman GTS is in 6th at 45 mph. These cars are beasts.
Way too expensive for what it is.
By the time you put any decent options on it you are spending over $80k.
Sorry but even if this is slightly faster on a track I'd rather get an M2 and save $20k plus have better equipment.
You know what sounds "granular" and "coarse"? The sound of the tires with you constantly drifting onto the rumble strips in one of the most precise-handling cars out there, proving you can't drive worth crap.
could an average person afford this car?
Just....just...just why did they take the 6cyl away!!!
Sounds like a brain fart.
Does this guy even know he has paddle shifts?
I just don’t get what people say about the sound. Who gives a flipping F. It is about the way it handles and overall performance. Get over yourself.
4cyl lol. i prefer v8 but i respect a 6cyl in some cars. for example porsche o wait not no more lol porsche wanting to make more money thats all.
Jesus H Medrano so you don’t like the 919?
Alan Bowers lol wow u went from a street car to a race car bro...
Jesus H Medrano I did, a 4 cylinder race car.
Alan Bowers mm yea bro that question is as dumb as you asking me if i would take this porsche if someone given it to me free. but anyways... good talking to you
Jesus H Medrano you didn’t stipulate what kind of 4 cylinder, you just lol’d. I was merely providing a counterpoint to said lol.
Ugh...why review with an automatic? Want a car to drive itself get a Tesla, this is supposed to be a drivers car. Always get the manual.
Otherwise, great review!
Dolby109 sometimes you just gotta go with what Porsche gives you.
Oh, it's another one of those people...
Just be glad they still even offer a manual. In 10 years they may not.
You are correct, although that will have more to do with the fact that probably all cars will be electric, and automated within 10-20 years.
Proper manual drivers cars will be very valuable.
Agreed. If I were buying a Boxster/Cayman I'd get the manual 100%
Sergio Aguirre
1) You are wrong in your assertion about manuals not being able to handle torque.
300 hp is more than enough fool
Todd Medium Wellington III nah not really
Most people who usually want more power usually end up being the idiots who crash thinking they are the shit
Mowflex The SubNegro or just people who wana go faster lol?
Jlove power to weight ratio is much better than hp numbers
Mowflex The SubNegro still relatively slow..
The design is just to regular and plain. No wow factor, no cool exhaust sound, no cool interior...
The new 718 is far from plain, and is one of the most beautiful cars ever made, especially in the Chalk White color.
Geez, the guy complaining about the tall gearing while his hands are over the paddle shifters. Also, if you’re so concerned about the tall shifting you can get this car in a manual transmission. Duh!
Discount Paul Walker.
The sound is juz horrendous
"The ability to make the ride worse"
haha, brutally honest
Sounds just like a John Deere Tractor, made me want to go plow a field.
Is it weird that I rather have a 86 and enjoy ringing out that n/a 4 cyl? Not as much power but it screams at least. Plus it's a Toyota.
That's an expensive name plate.
broke person's excuse when buying a chevy
@@leedan8819 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 LMFAOO
This sounds so awful. I would rather get a F Type.
mansees base F Type also has a 2.0 4 cylinder.
Or you could get something with good performance for much less money.
Yes but it sounds a lot better. This Porsche sounds like someone's grandpa had a sore throat.
I tell ya what I do hear is you running over the fucking chicane every time.....brump brump brump!
It's a Porsche - It's expensive - It SHOULD be perfect. It isn't. The end.
This or a camaro zl1... with 650 horsepower?? Lol
123bigred I have a zl1, and i am considering a 718. Not a fan of the auto box in the camaro.
123bigred depends on what you want, power or sporting finesse and refinement.
The Tremek manual in the Camaro's are very nice...should have considered that first.
Alan - The Camaro is actually surprisingly adept. Maybe not quite as refined, but this video shows the Porsche has just as much plastic inside as the Camaro.
This
An automatic Porsche? Yawn...you might as well be driving a Prius.
This new guy needs to get fired !!!!
Huh? You trolling?
Leave it to Carlos to exceptionally explain the nuances of this a BASE Cayman. How he described lifting of the throttle slightly to get the rear to lightly understeer to push front through a corner was we exquisite.
That's just basic stuff that applies to any car to a degree. Lifting off the throttle in any car will provide the front tires with more grip due to the weight shifting more to the front and off of the rear.
