- Growing up, Julie Lindahl felt an indescribable guilt, a feeling she could never understand (Full story: wbur.fm/2jGhJzY). Once she discovered that her grandfather had been a brutal SS officer during World War II, she decided to devote her life to digging into the truth. Unlocking the secrets of her family showed Julie the worst, and then the best, of humankind.

What a warm-hearted compassionate woman Julie Lindahl is.
Have been a genealogist for 30+ years and virtually everyone is descended from good and bad, killers and victims, folks who gave up and others who endured. You are not responsible for the sins of your ancestors no more that you can take credit for their accomplishments.
Douglas W I've often thought these very things that you expressed.
Good observation. It's our DNA we get from our parents, not their guilt.
Well said. Are you also a writer? :) ❤️
Wow! Well put
Yes and no. When it comes to crimes against humanity, you have a moral right to raise your children right and to make sure those mistakes are never repeated. As a nation the Germans paid reparations to the people their ancestors harmed and that is the right thing to do. If everyone would go around thinking that has nothing to do with them those reparations couldn't have been paid.
The kind world we live in needs to be protected by each one of us who are seeking a kind world deep in our heart.
Please remember that we DON'T pick your ancestors. You are responsible for your life heading onward. Learn from the past, but it's just that, the past.
What a beautiful woman
She was honest with her feelings and she also showed me another side of children with parents of horrible crimes
It's true it isnt her fault if anything she seemed completely opposite of her past grandparent
Thank you for your story it will help many and please continue with it

Life started with you. Your grandfather was a heartless man, this has nothing to do with you.
Offspring are not responsible for the atrocities of there forebears. Never, ever. No you have no responsibility any more than any of us who aren’t the offspring.
That's right
She has way too much guilt for something she had no blame for.
You blame yourself for loving a person who has harmed so many. You then begin to overthink all their actions and wonder how you can share dna with a person who is so inhumane and cruel. She’s just a very empathetic person, unfortunately her grandparents’ actions will forever haunt her.
I know how she feels. I found out an ancestor of mine was a slave owner on plantations in Jamaica, one of his sons born to a slave is also my direct ancestor.
The son Robert Wedderburn settled in England and in his own way fought against slave ownership through preaching and publishing anti salver books, based on his own experiences. He lived long enough to see slavery abolished under British rule. The good and bad of our lineage. For a long time l felt shame knowing a ancestor of mine owned slaves, and the suffering those slaves endured. However I’ve come to accept the past is the past and hopefully one day mankind will learn its lessons. Unfortunately not yet.
This is true! And yet if you are an American and your many past generations owned slaves you are made to feel and carry much shame and guilt. Who gets to decide this!?!
What we as humans do to each other is way beyond my comprehension...
Ecclesiastes chapter 8 verse 9.
You were meant to meet that man. Take care look after yourself. Tomorrow is a new day for us all 💚
Very moving story . We probably all have ancestors somewhere in the past we would be ashamed of today !
Omgosh I was crying the whole time. I too would have felt that guilt if it had been me. God bless her.
My grandmother was German and very abusive could not be more of a mean person and I've always been afraid to get my genealogy done because I'm afraid who's in my family tree. I know though that we are not responsible for what past Generations did. We can only try to make a difference in our world and you sound like a super nice lady so I'm sure you do and we can just pray for the people...
I am the granddaughter of a merchant sea captain from Boston who heroically shipped supplies to the UK and France, during wartime, until February 1942. His ship was eventually torpedoed by a Nazi U-Boat off the coast of North Carolina. The captain and crew froze to death in lifeboats after the U-Boat shelled what remained of the ship to the bottom. For sport, apparently. I never knew him because my father never knew his father. The captain was killed when my father was only 3 years old. These things do carry grief and weight for generations. Thanks to Julie for telling her own family story.
They died honourable men though. I would be so proud if I were you.
Merci a vous
I can tell that you are a good person by the way your face portrays the pain you feel because of this. THAT'S ALL THAT COUNTS !!!
Thank you so much for sharing your story !!
I am the granddaughter of a member of the Nazi Youth Party. My paternal grandmother joined for protection, along with her brother, after the Nazi's executed her own father.
It hurts my heart to know the cruelty that we humans perpetuate on each other and on the animals that we are supposed to care for as well. About 45 years ago I remember once saying to God that I offered go to hell if He would just stop the cruelty to innocent and defenseless children and animals.
God does promise that all these horrible things will be done away with very soon. Satan is the ruler of this world now, but God won’t let that carry on. See 1st John 5 verse 19. Also Ecclesiastes 8 verse 9 shows that man does dominate man to his injury at the moment. But soon the Earth will be cleansed of wickedness. There is so much in Gods bible that tells us this. It sounds crazy , but that’s what Satan wants everyone to believe. His biggest weapon is that very few believe in his existence. Good times are coming, but only by the power of Gods Kingdom, the one we all pray about in the Lords Prayer. May this lady Julie, find peace.
A Excellent Video.. Highly Recommended..Julie Is A Sweet Kind Lady..
God bless you. I too have felt shame for the actions of some of my ancestors.
As a jew I can understand her guilt my Jewish ancestors were from Poland all deported first podrums she was disgusted of belonging to such family at least she came clean on her past to free her from that guilt
Very compassionate woman.
Constellation work is all about breaking the binds from that which we inherit.
I dont understand why some people wants or feel responsible for acts done by somebody else in the past.
Yes, we cannot bear another's guilt, but we cannot discount it either and that is what I hear so often. "it was another time" "they had no other choice" and so forth. It is important that we acknowledge the sins of our past generations so that it is not repeated. It all starts in what many think is innocent "joking" about someone else based on a whole list of "otherness". Thank you both for the Peace you are pointing to!!!!
GOD Blesses you. Thank you. Sending 💚💚!
All my Polish aristocratic family was killed by Germans, christian, like 60 millions of Slavic. The minimum is to be depressed and feel bad. We won’t harm you but we don’t except less. Nothing will bring our families back, we had to emigrate because they was no one left. We need more help than you but you also need help. Amen
My old manager was German. Not talking German ancestory, but actually German, and in her 50's at the time, so her parents were possibly in WW2. She never talked of her family . I'd ask her if she ever goes back to see her family. She says no. I asked her about mother and father and she'd just change the subject. I always had a feeling she was hiding something about them.
This is the foundation of Finding Your Roots...
Self humanization needs to be worked on by the descendents of victims and perpetrators.
I hope that people demanding reparations from people who were never slave owners to people who were never slaves can try and understand this.

Each and everyone of us has a responsibilty to be something- whether we choose to be slovenly, or ambitious and motivated, is up to us, each one on his/her own.
A person's life worth depends on what he/she decides to do with that life. You are either part of the problem, or you are part of the solution. It's up to you.
Awesome
Wonderful. I belong to a displaced family of partition of India. I harbour no hate to anybody. The world is destined to be a paradise. It’s a matter of time only. There'll be a billion years of bliss for all creatures of God.
You can not pay for the sins of your fathers
In both side of my family we have ancestors masters and slaves! It's part of my heritage! 🙏🏼
if you saw my ancestry and saw who they are , if i carried guilt for their doing , i could not live , i am not guilty of their actions only mine and that is true of all humans we are only guilty of our actions or inactions if we are there and do nothing , people love to hold such things against themselves , why ? we are captains of only one soul ours
Shame is real.
How dramatic is this lady
yet we still have democrats saying we are responsible for slavery. And I agree "I didn't do anything." I never had a slave, nor my parents, nor their parents, nor theirs.
But the bigotry is still there.
@@joycestewart4893 Why don't you tell the woman in this video that she is still a bigot? Your trash narrative is why she was so upset to begin with.
@@toomanymarys7355 _Why don't you tell the woman in this video that she is still a bigot?_
That's not what she said. Learn to read.
Somehow the same illogical thinking this poor woman used for her own misplaced guilt is being applied to the BLM narrative and we are supposed to believe the ridiculous assertion that modern-day whites, who never owned slaves, are supposed to make reparation payments to modern-day blacks, who were never slaves?
SO WHAT ???? U DIDNT DO ANYTHING WRONG .WHY U R DEPRESSED
Be kinder in your words.
You have no idea how it is to discover this about your grandfather. And special about what he did. Ecen when you didn't do anything this knowing is a weight on the soul and heart. It is good she talked about it. And took action to search more info. She is a courageous woman who want to break the chain with this past. To take action was the first step for healing. Very courageous. God bless her for a happy life now. Necer ever judge when you do not know.
You are obviously not an empathetic or sympathetic person. I.E heart of stone!
@@ashleymoon2969 he has some Hitler heart. Stony hearty.
If you're depressed about the actions of your ancestors, then you're a nutcase. Get therapy, not for your depression, but for your deranged brain.
