Her routine was superb and she won the all-around gold medal at two consecutive Olympics. And she remains the only gymnast, male or female, to have won an Olympic gold medal in each individual event. But the most iconic became her symbolic defiance against the Soviet Union, the Communist regime and the forceful invasion and occupation of Czechoslovakia at that time, when, at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, she turned her head away and down while the Soviet national anthem was playing during the medal ceremonies. That was an incredibly bold and courageous move in those times ehich she knew she was going to be brutaly persecuted for. Respect!
WOW! More of these videos, please. She was great and full of enthusiasm, both entertaining and inspirational! :) Nice to remember previous achievements, @olympics
At first she did not want to go…but the Soviet tanks rolled into her Capitol city where she was training. She got out, but went back. She felt a compulsive need to defend her country. When the Russian judges and their cohorts decided to make the AA a tie, while the Russian anthem was being played, that brave woman turned her head.
I honestly thought she was going to break her back in that first split. OH MY GOODNESS THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!! Her energy, and execution, or amazing!

She was so much more flexible, supple and precise than modern gymnasts.

She is far better than the most overrated gymnast Simone Biles many times !
