Věra, what a legend you are. Your 'silent' protest, for me it was loud and clear, meant and still means the world to me. An action which had an impact on my life for ever. You will be missed for ever heroine Věra Čáslavská.
To bad she died this past year at 74 from pancreatic cancer. I read that her marriage was tumultuous to the runner guy she married during these Olympics. Had a son and daughter. The son had an altercation with her husband (his father) when he was 19 and hit in the head.It caused him to go into a coma for which he later died in 1993. The son didn't end up going to jail due to lack of sufficient evidence. Apparently she never was the same after that, though she got into coaching later on. Sad how sometimes life can turn out when you think you have it all.
Amazing cinematography, just amazing! Compositions, way of storytelling, movement, the attitude of this video shot in 1968 for the sport event is just terrific!!! Could you please tell me the aspect ratio and film format (16mm, 35mm) of the original footage? Thank you.
This is what real gymnastics supposed to be. Today´s gymnastics is only acrobatic, jumps with lack of flexibility and artistry Soviet technique was amazing, Vera was simply superb...Good bless Vera Caslavska !!!
True artistic gymnastics here. It had to be so hard on the body to tumble on what appeared to be little more than a thin Matt with carpeting. They performed with graceful athleticism with a smile on their face. R-I-P Ms Vera Caslavska. One the greats.
Natasha Kuchinskaya, Zinaida Voronina, Larisa Petrik and Olga Karaseva were ny favorites of Mexico 68.
Hi David... yes it is, but don't miss Kon Ichikawa's milestone filmography of the 1964 Tokyo Olympiad. Only Leni Riefenstahl's 1936 Berlin Olympics did something so completely different like Kon.
Ahh this is so awesome! Love the video quality, the audio dubbing is kind of goofy but the awesome music totally makes up for it. The series of clips starting at 8:24 would get the producers of this in a whole lot of trouble had it been made today :3
And the Soviet [edit: Czech!] athlete (with sunglasses) at the end of that sequence looks to be about to say, "Wait, were you just zooming in on their BUTTS!?"
@@OneWhoLivesThere That isn't a "soviet athlete", that's a Czechoslovakian one. That difference is pretty important, especially at those olympic games, since that was the year that Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia. Čáslavská protested when she won the gold medal by turning her head to the side when soviet anthem was played. And she got banned for it for several years by the communistic government.
@@mrkv4k Thanks for the explanation. I am referring to the woman at 8:55 with an emblem on her chest that looks to read "OSSR". You are saying that OSSR refers to Czechoslovakia? I am familiar with USSR and likely mistook OSSR for USSR when I made my comment.
Nice typo in the info box. I believe you meant 1968 not 1986. That would be a vast devolution in sporting standards from 1984 and then rapid return in Seoul 1988 :-p

It was amazing Mexican swimmer beat Soviet union and America Exatamente

Something so hypnotic about 60s music.
I just love how Vera Čáslavská's hair changes between 2 different hairstyles during the 'same' bar routine at the 2 min mark. Continuity nightmare!
funny
Incredible soundtrack for astounding athletes.
The Mexico City Olympics were unforgettable
How beautifully shot. It looks almost modern, not - gasp - half a century ago. Thank you for posting this.
vera, Mexico's heart belongs to you , we'll allways remember you , see you in Paradise to hug you , God bless Checoslovaquia and vera
Legendary gymnast Vera Čáslavská died Tuesday night at age 74. Čáslavská a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
2016 8.31.
I am so shocked right now.... THE QUEEN, THE LEGEND
Was Vera literally smiling through her uneven bars routine? WOW. That's hard to do.
I watch it twice and she really was smiling. Maybe that is her way of saying " beat that you ruskie".

Vera was the queen of Mexico City. But Natasha was loved too. Vera say that since 1976 Olympics the gymnastics turned so dangerous.

*legend*
Back when gymnastics was still a real sport. Real athletes, real women. No drugs, no springs, no padded beams. Just beautiful gymastics.
Those Russian gymnasts were so pretty, in a girl-next-door type of way.
Do you have Sarajevo 84 Olympic Film?
Dannnggg! I never knew women did "twisters" in gymanstics in the 1960's!

The 60s were so stylish 💜
People sure took pride in their appearance back then .
Hey there Olympic Channel..can you please tell us what music is playing during Vera Caslavska's slo-mo performance. Many would like to know. Thanks!
Ocean of Calm (original mix) by Andy Wonderland
During the floor´s performance routine, Vera choose a potpourri of Mexican folk music which made mexicans fall in live with her.
R.I.P:(

you all have a very good balance your work was stunning
Does anyone know the name of the music played first on this video?
Right on Daniel, I wish to heck I knew as well.... let's keep searching.
@ 10:10 like every olympic games the mens marathon acted as a climax
8:25 wow this whole part is so sexist, it is hilarious!
something ... yep. Times haven't changed much in 50 years. It all just gets rolled in a different colored wrapper making louder noises.
I think the same 😀
