She is my hero. She was expecting a baby at the 1958 worlds. Five months along when she won. People compare her to biles. Biles is great. It was a different time. World's only happened once ever four years. She is a wonderful gymnast!
Biles is a steroid creature... Sad
There's a massive gap between modern gymnastics skills vs that era.
They let her compete while pregnant?! That’s crazy and dangerous!
I love that she was there to watch at 81 years old!! ❤️
What took them so long? A great swimmer.
that's fake news
She Started mind you started gymnastics at the age of 11 and went in two compete in 3 Olympic Games winning a total of 18 🏅’s. That’s insane. And all started because her ballet school closed down. It’s always been said that God doesn’t close one door without opening another.
@QPHashSS77 you're absolutely right. God doesn't give gifts to people. I forgot
Such grace and poise. Totally awesome Larissa Latynina 🏆🤗
Larissa Latynina is an icon and most deserving of this homage. However, I can't believe the IOC doesn't have BETTER COMPETITION FOOTAGE that really shows her prowess. The narration is also lacking better insights and anecdotes.
Agreed
Thanks for this upload, because I had never seen the recording of earlier Olympics , particularly concerning this events. Never knew about this athlete. Never even saw the Olympics before 1984. Has seen about Nadia Comaneci perfect.
Nadia made it in 1976
Is the floor exercise surface different today? There seemed to be no bounce at all in these old routines. In fact the floor looked very hard.
Yes. Back then gymnast usually competed on concrete or concrete floors with mats. Nowadays gymnasts can compete on floors that have Springs underneath them and cushion Falls better
Although Latynina’s medal count is certainly impressive, it is not the determining factor for me as the best gymnast. The routine/elements difficulty is certainly different from those in 1974-1984 competitions. The most extraordinary, skilled gymnasts in my opinion are Corbut, Mukhina, and Comăneci. They performed the most difficult elements like the Corbut flip and Thomas Salto, which in fact were banned from female gymnastics because of how dangerous they were. These ladies set unparalleled standards in the history of gymnastics.
It’s Korbut, not Corbut
I wish more people knew about Mukhina. She was on her way to perfection when she broke her neck. What might have been with her career is unknowable but she should be more well known.
This video isn't about who was the best gymnast(Comparing different times, it's so crazy). It's About Latynina and her success at the Olympics. I think Latynina is a pioneer.
no one said she was the best gymnast, but it is a fact that she is the most olympic successful one
@@MeganVictoriaKearns I heard Larissa was one of the few people who regularly visited Elena after she was paralyzed.
Like the only famous person I share my name with
Larissa Warren theres Larisa Iordache, a gymnast from Romania who was in the olympics
InTheLifeOfShay ah ok, but I think Larisa latyna is more famous as ive heard of her before, but I'm not sure.
My name is Larissa too! Very uncommon name in USA.
Gymnastics is my favorite thing to do
Věra Čáslavská forever in our hearts ❤
I'm 1/2 Polish- let's hear it for that! 🥉she can move & bend amazingly!🎆
i
Only 1/2? You missed a spot...
Larisa Latynina and Vera Caslavska were the first superstars of gymnastics.
ExtraLore yeah!! Whatever you just said.
It is so sad when people live in the land of denial. Russia is questionable at best and have been found guilty of doping on so many accounts that your teams can't even compete as Russia. You have some great athletes but not such a great track record with competing in a honest way. Until that happens it is hard to agree with your statement.
Even i think Classic 70s Sesame Street gymnast Deborah Eich-Romer (aka Heidi Magner's mom) could not top Larissa Latynina.
Omg
Супер
This proves how much goes into being a ballerina. A ballet reject grows up to dominate women's gymnastics.
Their routines were so simple compared to today, no comparison
Yeah because she had like the same springs on the floor, the same science and technical knowledge, etc. etc...
the skills were so easy back then
If you look back in most sports, there is development of skills that are progressively harder over the years.
Salut 💖😚⚽
Prosit!
:-)
👍👍💕💕💕
It is weird how much easier gymnastics was back then
Emma Hamilton But gymnasts back then was more about dance and form control not executing really hard skills
Look at the size and ages of the gymnasts.
@@letsdothis3332 Bet you couldn't do any of those skills with ease & grace.
@@ctruth6185 I'm sorry, Most people on this planet cannot do those skills. What a stupid statement
@@letsdothis3332 Brilliant response to that facetious attack!
I wish they never grow old and look fit for a lifetime.
My name is Larissa but I'm American. I love my non-American name.
It's not (Vera Caslavska) Kashlavska, but Chaslavska ("ch" like in cheddar, and "slav" like in Slavs, not shlavs)
Back when thefloor routine was graceful and did stunts. Now it is all about the stunts!( I know stunts is not the right word)
I'd rather watch for technical agility than the artsy dance moves. I couldn't care less about Grace over Agility & Technical Abilities.
@@LaPetite510 that's the difference between younger and older generations. We
like what we grew up with. Style, grace. It was even like that in figure skating, now just choppy moves and stunts.
@@beckyjacobsen5867 The word(s) you're looking for is acrobatics (or tricks). Whilst in contrast to this the word "gymnastics" actually refers to the leaps, hops, turns and jumps colloquially known as the _dance_ elements.
Who is born ‘Great’?

Yeahhh, whay took them so long? 😜
Wouldn’t you want me too lol 😝
she was born in the USSR, and not in Ukraine.
Ukraine was part of the USSR
She was born in both, Ukraine was part of the Society Union.
Musty Fan, dude, what is Society Union?
any other swimmer here who threw there fist in the air as they showed michael phelps .. n just got exited????
Mark spitz
The narration on this episode is awful
On the one hand, she was certainly talented. On the other hand, judging at the time was suuuuuper corrupt and heavily weighted in favor of the Soviets. So...this video is kind of awkward to watch tbh.
why was judging heavily weighted in favour of the Soviets in Olympics outside the Soviet Union? The judging has certainly been heavily weighted in favour of USA in its home Olympics.
+mizofan ...the Soviets definitely cheated multiple times example: 1968 Olympics, Larisa Petrik did not deserve her gold it should of been Vera's alone.
@@cole99522 Oh boy, well almost all high performing athletes in the US have some illness that usually has to be treated with steroids.
Whitewashing steroid abuse on a massive scale by doctors handing out prescriptions for fake illnesses is cheating today not yesterday.
I doubt the judging was heavily rigged for the Soviets since they were new to the sport. Modern gymnastics today is corrupt also and heavily weighted in favor of the U.S.A. Why bother to comment or watch at all if you dislike it?
In the meantime, Simone biles is a quitter!
Until Drugs Phelps came
She's not the most successful Olympian, that's Michael Phelps
hello bluefood the most sucessfull olympic GYMNAST...
hello bluefood Michael Phelps wasn’t even born yet when she was competing. She WAS the most decorated Olympian of all time, as the video states.
Plus, the title specifically says *gymnast*
do u mean Michael Phelps is female ???
Attention span issues much?
She WAS the most succesfull for decades, until Michael Phelps beat her. And she was the best, not only in gimnastic and not only female
