Restoration Caucasian Dagger - Removing Century Rust
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 гру 2022
- Hello folks! You haven't seen such a restoration yet! I managed to get a unique Georgian dagger of the Caucasian type, which has been underground for a very long time, I guess (after checking the stamp ~ 150 years). I was told that it is impossible to restore it, it is already dusted, but I have a different opinion. Well, let's start restoring this unique blade!
Firstly, I removed huge layers of rust with a spatula. All the metal of the dagger has turned to rust, but there is hope, the century rust was falling off the blade, it was very surprising! Next, the dagger placed it in a jar together with a rust remover. A few hours later I took it out, washed and dried it, but the rust remained. Via iron brush, I removed the remnants of rust from the blade. And even found the stamp of the dagger!
Rust has damaged the cutting edge very badly. I had to sand it off, due to the thickness that remained could be 0.01 mm. Further, I welded all the holes that were on the blade and deep dents with welding at low voltage. Then I moved on to protecting the surface of the blade. First I etched the blade with nitric acid solution, and then I used a blackening agent and graphite grease.
The handle of the dagger, there were difficulties here too. Due to the handle of the dagger was all rusted and became very thin, I could not use ordinary wooden handle material, and I cut grooves in the wood and inserted the handle there. Next, I cut out the shape of the handle, sanded it and prepared it for gluing. For a better fixation, I cut out decorative fittings from bronze, which will also fix the handle entirely.
Steel dagger rivets, I had to go to my friend's workshop because I don't have a metal lathe machine. I glued the handle of the dagger with epoxy resin with sawdust. I riveted the handle with two rivets. And in order to give an older look, I tinted it with a paste that remained on the felt circle. This method gives the appearance of an old dagger handle that we can see in the museum.
I made the dagger sheath out of wood. I pasted the scabbard with natural leather of medium thickness. The accessories of the scabbard I made entirely of brass with decorative elements. The work takes a lot of time, but I hope you enjoy it. Please share your opinion and this video.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

I like to think that the original smith that made this blade is looking down and smiling seeing something they worked so hard on, restored to its original beautiful state, so many years after their passing.
I don’t know about ORIGINAL, but definitely back to a state where it can be appreciated and used again
Or looking up at him....
It's very nice but there was a lot of metal that was lost due to rust
@@tanuki01 True it's as "original" as its gonna get given the damage that had already been done and all.

I thought for sure there was going to be nothing left of that after you removed all the rust. Great job!
Hello, thank you so much! You should to check my last work with dagger, there is there in general the blade was rotten) But I saved it (here is is ua-cam.com/video/CeAbPn2ORY0/v-deo.html)

This restoration was magical. I am always in awe of the skills, understanding, patience and knowledge required to accomplish a project like this without mangling the piece. All credit to you and the original craftsman.

Greetings to you! Thank you for your interest and attention. If you have any questions, write to me on Instagram or Facebook, I will answer there faster. (links to social networks in the description of the video, as well as on the main page of my channel)
You should watch the movie "And then we danced" (2019). First film from Georgia I watched ... and loved it!
When your dagger is longer than your forearm, it might be a short sword.
Real swords are way longer. I think you played too much oblivion… I don’t blame you
🤓
@@katooga9749i think he is right tho, he said "short" sword. Not just sword.
@@katooga9749 "Real" depends on when you are and the materiel science of the time.
If you want to get into it the root of sword is "sver" which just means "to hurt". A 'sword' is just a hurty stick. The earliest swords we have found maxed out at around 30cm. They were made of copper.
I love watching restoration projects of all kinds. Great job!! Your attention to details is what makes it special.

Wow! Just WOW! Amazing job. There was an actual knife blade under all that rust and sediment. Alhamdalillah 🧿🕊️🌹

Now that is a restoration!
I very much like how you left the blade raw with all the pitting.

👍👍
Same here. It made my day to see the blade retain the passage of time.
I like how instead of using a welder to thicken the tang, you extended the handle to cover the blade. And I love how restoring the weapon is only half the job for you, and you make a scabbard for the weapons you restore, too.
Thank you for feedback. As for the restoration of Caucasian edged weapons, I try to do it the way my ancestors did and as I read in books
The spirit of the blade has been given a new beautiful life. Well done.
Thank you so much for feedback!

Marvelous work, and a very respectful one, a true craftman!!!!
Wow! When I saw what you were starting with, I knew that blade would never be what it once was. But, I also knew if anyone could give it a second life, it would be you. This blade will live on, because of you.
Yes, in short, the story is this: when they found him, they wanted to throw him in the trash and I volunteered to restore him)

Was it really "restored" though?

This dagger had the most amount of rust pockets, of course. It wasn't used during Joan of Arc's time in Europe.

This is my first time watching a restoration video from this guy.
Must say, was impressed you did not just the handle, but also the scabbard, the pummel, and even included a notch with leather loop to hang the blade, many props.
Also, there's a slight goofy charm that was pleasant to witness. Compared to a bunch of the completely silent restoration videos you see out there. Like the part with the slightly off transition magic scene edit when you were making the connecting copper piece. It was just fun to watch, and the fact the editing wasn't perfect, I think made it more enjoyable.
Looking forward to checking out more of your videos.

@@ScrewsAndToolsThe cover at the end was what for? Just for looks? Everytime that sword looking knife will be taken out of It's cover that metal part at the bottom will fall apart. Instead of joining them together you made two separate cover so that person using it have to keep track of two separate covers instead of one. Any logical explanation?
Are you talking about the brass tip of the scabbard?

Brother, you are a true master. I know you must hear that a lot, but you DESERVE it. I run a classic-only Bicycle Club. To get in, you got to get a bike(1990-older) and dismantle EVERY nut and bolt. I also do classic (loose-ball bearing wheel skateboards and roller skates) those are a BITCH when ALL the balls fall out by accident and skater EVERYWHERE. from about 1960-older.

That is absolutely amazing work!!! Just beautiful--and so many handicraft skills which likely are very little different from how the dagger was first made. With the exception of electricity of course! I wonder if that first, heavy coating of flaky 'rust' was actually the remains of the old scabbard? If so it could have protected the blade from even worse damage!
