FULL Restoration of DESTROYED Caucasian Shashka

- Hello folks! Today I have a restoration and a total rescue of the shashka! I don't even know where to start. In short, this is a non-statutory shashka sword of the 19th century, produced in Western Georgia, the type of shashka is Caucasian.
Now, was some "master" trying to make a katana out of this unique item? What?! Serious? Why? I was in shock. But, well, it's time to save the item and restore the shashka as it should be!
The first duty, I began to analyze the "handle". It wasn't easy, but I was lucky that the previous "master" didn't know how to use welding, so it took me 3 hours to do everything.
Next, I used a rust remover, then washed, dried and oiled.
Tang, then I had to go to the workshop to a friend because it took semi-automatic welding. The shank was made from a piece of steel plate of the same width and thickness, initially it turned out to be long (with a margin). The groove-to-groove fit method. Then, at home, I corrected the shank. I changed its length and shape, added holes and started sanding.
I started sanding the blade with sandpaper from 80 to 240 grit. The goal is to clean up slightly and at the same time leave traces that have appeared over time. After finishing polishing the shashka sword, I moved on to the handle.
The wood was chosen by beech, the method of cutting a groove under the tang of the shashka. Brass rivets with washers, epoxy glue. The handle was processed, and in the end covered with a black matte varnish for wood.
The scabbard was made of wood, processed mainly by hand. At the end, I sharpened it on a sander machine. Pasted over with black natural thin leather. The accessories of the scabbard were made of brass and at the end of it was darkened with a balistol in order to give an old look.
As usual, I conducted an interesting test of Caucasian shashkas. I hope you enjoy this restoration video. Please don't forget to like and share your opinion and this video!
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

I have nothing but respect for you, in the beginning it hurt my heart seeing how someone destroyed that beautiful piece of art. At the end I was overwhelmed with joy and appreciation of your craft. Bless you brother.
Greetings! Thank you so much for your attention and feedback

This has to be your best yet. Transforming such a badly treated sword into a work of art. Well done sir.
Thank you so much!
I love when you make stuff with an intentional vintage look!! And when you bend and cut materials by hand similarly to how it might have been made years ago.
Wow, what a restoration! That thing was a mess at first but you did an outstanding job as per usual. That test was the most fun one yet, it was a cool skit! I remember my Russian mother telling me a story about how in Georgia they have those horn cups so that you have to finish your drink before putting them down
Greetings! Thanks for attention. Your mom is right.
Nothing quite like having a beer and watching your videos at the same time. It's always enjoyable. Thank you for the long video this time, it is truly appreciated. Keep those videos coming!
Thanks))
That is absolutely gorgeous. So happy to see a restoration of this kind of blade, sucks to see that people will just screw around with them and try to make other crap with it. Great job!
Amazing restoration. It is remarkable that you can make someone's mistake into an awesome work of art. Perhaps, if more young people studied their history and learned to respect it, they wouldn't disregard the importance of artifacts from their culture. Thank you for restoring that beautiful piece.
Hello! Very kindly, thanks ^_^
You my friend are a true craftsman. I love to watch you do what you do. Another amazing restoration. ~Kevin

Hello Alex, a truly spectacular restoration! Thank you for returning a beautiful historic sword back to its natural state! And the scabbard is a work of art! Thank You for another great video! All the very best to you and yours from Southern California!

@@ScrewsAndTools you destroyed everything original with this piece and you ask why? As a weapons historian I rate you a negative 10 out of 10! Please find something else to destroy other than hand made objects. In the professional world of restoration you are literally the scum at the bottom of the barrel!
You are absolutely an amazing human being. It is such a joy to watch your videos with the owner of this account called Thomas. I am Peggy. His wife. The ending to this video was absolutely precious. One thing with you Alex we do not ever know what to expect and that's part of your beauty. Tom says your charm I agree.
Costume and presentation at the end are great! I love your full Georgian attire. Also greetings for the lovely lady.

So crazy to think your the only person to touch that inside of the handle since the person that forged it. So cool!!!
Absolutely brilliant work I enjoy watching you 😊

Good evening Calvin! I hope you are all right, good luck to you!
Fantastic restoration of the handle phenomenal work
Thank you for rescuing that sad sword! Why would someone ever do that to such a blade?
Perhaps some madman imagined that he was a great master)
@@ScrewsAndTools это был я
@@ScrewsAndTools That's not even a proper katana hilt. That's just a handguard and lump of whatever they used for the handle. A metal pipe perhaps? So it fails on multiple levels. A Shashka with an actual katana hilt would have actual been interesting even though it was wrong. Nice job on the restoration.
Great work and craftsmanship. It’s a joy to watch your videos. Thanks for sharing👍
If I may add that if you had replaced the cross guard, an essential part of the sword, you would not require a longer scabbard.
Nice restoration as usual. Bloopers added are always the best! Cheers from Argentina
Thank you!

Thank you for attetnion!
Beautiful job my friend. 👍
Sir, it is always a pleasure to watch a craftsman at work. Particularly one with a sense of humour. With this project, (albeit far from me to criticize) I think your second choice of brass for the furniture was the correct one. Thank you for sharing !
