Dan's Jazz Guitar Renovation: Can We Breathe New Life Into This Neglected Jazzbox?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 чер 2024
- I want to fix up my old Washburn J6 semi-acoustic. Matt Gleeson from Monty's Guitars is the man for the job!
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! This guitar was a gift from my wonderful guitar teacher, Mark Johns. It's been played a lot, but also neglected a lot over the last 20 years, so it's time for a complete overhaul including new electronics, pickups, switches, pots etc. Can we rebirth this guitar to something loveable again?
Enjoy the show!

Just another humble professional who knows exactly what he's doing.
Could you give us an idea about how much it would cost to get that kind of job done?
Great fun Dan. Thanks for inviting us along for the ride.
Someone needs to persuade Dan to let Matt make some clones of the pirckups out of the Red Tele!. You'll sell a zillion of them!
this is a good idea
How about also making Pete's purple strat set as well :)
Well he had a Don Mare pickup in one of the positions so it would be a bit cheeky and maybe slightly unprofessional to copy that.
@@WutipongWongsakuldej see wot you did there.

Please do more of these shows. Such a blast to see this process.
Hands down to Matt!!! what a humble and unselfish person! he literally gave us all those tips and tricks, that even if you aren't going to do the work on your guitar, now you know how to ask your technician or luthier to do it or try it in your instrument!! Also LOVE!! the attention to detail in all the graphics in his products! hands down!! congrats on reviving that jazz box Dan!
Thanks man 🤜🤛💚
Great topic! Jazzbox servicing has remained an underexplained area until this video and Matt has been extremely open about the tricks of his trade. Fretboard wax was cool. Enjoyed every second.
Bassist and orchestra teacher here (who apprenticed in a violin shop for a while). I sometimes use a little rosin on the feet of the bridge on a polished finish instrument.
What a pro...I've learned a lot from this. Many thanks mate !
I am a HUGE fan of these videos when you document methods & advice the Pro's give while doing work and adjusting different components, Even learning about how they clean various parts. I learned and absorbed a ton of good information with this one & the series you did with Kinkaid. Thank you Dan.
Sans the steel wool BS. NEVER use less noble metals on metals! Yo'll end up with ferris oxide EVERYWHERE, including putting RUST in the fingerboard wood. No machine shop on earth uses steel wool, because they understand chemistry and technique.
This gut is like a painter, letting the car dry next to a train track.
@@kennethc2466 What do you use?
@@craig.encinitas I find Mother's chrome polish, on a microfiber covered hard block, the best. Hard block keeps the lows from getting lower. Then, finish the frets, strings, AND fingerboard in pure silicon spray.
Keeps the friction down, while sealing sweat out (especially the strings, makes them last so much longer).
Haven't changed my frets in 17 years, on 7 guitars, after using this method, when previously I'd need it bad every 10 years. I play everyday, at least once.
The mineral oil and steel wool BS is just tradition built on unquestioning ignorance.
To say I am gobsmacked, stunned and amazed, by this young gentleman's talent, his mastery of so many skills. All of this video is perfection. He is a treasure. A master of his craft. This video will be watched many times, and shared with all my guitar buddies. Dan, yes please, we need more of these kinds of videos. 😊😊😊
Thank you for this video, it was great to see the work done to keep this guitar working buttery smooth!
I have a 1984 Epiphone Emperor in which I am getting ready to do the very same upgrades to so I am glad to have come across this video which will help me to do the job right!
This Mark teacher of yours must be so proud to have you as a friend, Dan. What a wonderful act of friendship.
I respect the spitfire hoody. He's a skater. Also george made my birthday really special. Got me some aged nickle pickups, with outstanding service. Long live montys!!!
These types of episodes are my favourite. I get tired of all the pedal / gear stuff sometimes, but it's always fascinating to see a craftsman at work.
There is something satisfying about watching a luthier at work.
This video is worth it for learning how to spot a “good” string. Well done
Cheers Scott, he’s so knowledgeable
indeed
I love his high quality and conscientious work. It really looks like he truly cares, and prides himself about doing the job right the 1st time.
27:20 - For an even deeper dive, look for Carl Verheyen tremolo setup videos. He goes so far as to setup up intervals and also references Mr Beck. Lovely episode - thanks Dan!
It is so amazing to see a real artisan at work; someone who loves their craft and has a deep knowledge. I think the NHS should prescribe watching this for stress! So relaxing and interesting. Well done! Bravo!
Mate, there are a lot of pearls of wisdom in this video. As someone who chooses to do all his own guitar work I am very happy to learn new tricks for setup stability. Thank you so much for sharing the journey and happy strumming.
This was an amazing learning and very enjoyable video. Thanks so much. Nice to see a real professional at work.
Being an American, I can't hear the nome," Monty", without thinking about Monty Python! Lol. Looking forward to watching this video!!!! Woot!
24:28 Fletch F. Fletch 🥰
It went from a well-loved basement guitar to a stage-ready jazzbox. Absolutely gorgeous now, and no, I don't mean Dan'.
I truly loved watching this. I don't have the money for expensive guitars or guitar techs. So I buy cheaper electric guitars and set them up myself. Videos like this are so valuable for people like me. Thank you!
I get so much joy from watching someone who is genuinely in love with what they do and really nerd out about the details. It's so much fun to see and hear the enthusiasm.
Love these kind of shows. Mixes things up a bit and gives great insight into different elements of this crazy world.
Its so zen to watch a guitar being restored
Making an old guitar like that functional is great. It’s probably sat unloved in a case for a while and now it’s dazzling and ready to provide somebody with years of joy. Good on you!
This was absolutely riveting. Couldn't take my eyes off. Inspires a shout out to all the indispensable guitar techs out there. Mine is the reason I keep playing and feel inspired, knowing each guitar has been made special. If there's ever a problem playing, it's always operator error. We just spoke this morning. About a new guitar...
I’m a bit of a Mod nerd and absolutely LOVE videos like this where the rough is just baking polished off the diamond. So great! Glad you love it! Cheers!
Absolutely amazing - what a talent and he's obviously very committed to getting the best setup possible 👏
wow that was the best most complete, useful , how to set up this style of guitar. Loved the way he didn't have to use fancy guages or tools. I'm going to rewire my japanese 70's pearl the same way. thanyou
Man, I wish this guy was in the states. What a great luthier with tons of knowledge and ingenuity. He’s a British version of TV Jones
Many years ago I worked with a local store as a tech and I miss doing these kind of revitalization jobs. I still buy old guitars sometimes to refurbish and resell. It’s very satisfying.
And I never knew the thread thing. That’s a great tip.
The backward turn to get the screw threads aligned... chef's kiss. Never heard of that trick.
I think this guys work backlog is gonna increase 3000%…..and what a nice guy.
Matt at Monty’s is a crazy knowledgeable guy and equally as cool. Great video and so glad he made an appearance here!
Watched the whole video like watching a brain Sergion at work mat was incredible thanks darryl Miller from New Jersey.
Wow, that little reverse turn trick - to find the existing thread! Brilliant! And looking for the curve of the string, this is the kind of knowledge you can only get from experience, it's very generous of people to share it. It's already sounding beautiful in your paws Dan. Quoth the Raven "What, a, shiiiine"
I told 2 guitar players about the curve string. They had a look of disbelief, I shared the video so they could see. Lol.
This was very cool to watch. I usually would only watch a few minutes when I see it almost an hour long but I was really engaged and stayed until the end. Loved it
There is something about a guitar maintenance and tech video that is so relaxing to me. Very stress relieving for some reason. Thanks Dan and Matt!
Great vid Dan and as a user of Matt's pickups n stuff he's a gent.
This video is worth the price of admission 1000%. Makes me want to get a bunch of Monty’s things
I bought a Washburn J6 in 1989 and had it until 2014. Great guitar. I like yours
I like all the tubes connected to the sides of the guitar while he's working on it... like a patient on the operating room table!
r.e. Matt’s set-up: BRILLIANT!
r.e. the guitar: (drools)
Well done, gents!
Wow how beautiful
Hands down, clearest explanation of guitar set-up, including wee pearls of wisdom. Great stuff Matt. Dan, you're a lucky man. Enjoy your new Jazzer!
Cheers

The string thing blew me away! Great show!
Yay! One for the jazz fans among us! Already love
it and havent got past the Boss multifx ads yet! :-)
What a guy Matt is, such a young guy and already a master of his craft. That trick with the screws to not ruin the thread is life changing.
Dan, you should bust this guitar out on the channel more. It’s great. Great video.
Matt is simply the best. So inspiring to see someone totally absorbed in their craft. I have a couple of sets of his pups - they are divine.
I have really enjoyed watching this I have a Washburn it's a J7 big jazz box it has a bigsby on it
It really looks like he's done an amazing job
Thumbs up from Geelong Australia 🦘🇭🇲👍🇭🇲
finally/// something interesting
Life is good for Dan 😎
Great - now I'm going to have a 5 year wait to get Monty to fix my guitar...
Outstanding. Thanks.
Love how Dan switched to the neck position at 42.05 without being plugged in. We all do it don't we
it is plugged in. You can hear the more mellow neck pick up when he changes it
@@alanhowell3646 guess i missed it haha, but a lot of us tend to flick switches when they're not even plugged in
Superb video.👏👏👏👏👏
Love watching Matt Gleason work.
Interesting 😊 thank you for sharing
Washburn makes solid player instruments & I’ve always loved them as soon as I found them
wow;what anice story!!!!Thx for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤓🙏
I always learn so much from this channel. This is no exception.
this guy is the real deal. Thanks for all the tricks
Have to say that guitar now sounds and looks amazing.
Thanks Dan for inviting us along. Matt HUGH thanks for sharing your knowledge and skill ... wow so many great nuggets!!!
I have never seen a better set up video. The mans a genius
LES FINS DES JAMBES! SHANK TERMINI! ENDS-ALL / BE'S-ALL OF LEGS-ALL! If you'll pardon the American sports reference, you gents just keep hitting home run after grand slam home run. Love everything you're doing--ever, but especially lately. Really inspired work. Thanks, too, for bringing back the podcast. (AND for recc'ing The Truth About Vintage Amps. Fan-freaking-tastic.)
Matt, the Monty's in my SG are awesome. Was nice to see the man behind the winds.
Dan, your shop trips are excellent!
Terrific to see real expert at work. Always pick up (boom boom) something to improve my endless tinkering through videos like this
WOW this is a master class in guitar care and feeding. So many great insights!
I love these equipment type blog videos. I completely nerd out on these without having to turn down the TV at midnight in Singapore. Nice jazz box to tide you over until the Kinkade instrument makes an appearance (some doofus 😂) 👏
P.S. how good is Matt at Monty’s??? Awesome!
What a transformation, and BEAUTIFUL Playing!
This guy is a legend 🙌
Loved it guys. Dan you are at your best playing Jazz. Do lots of it.
Cheers Nick 🙏
Wow i learned so much from that guy great video Thanks
Great stuff! This video scores high in educational value as well as in genuine "feel good" energy. There is something almost ASMR-like about instrument care done right. 😀
This episode had soothed my soul even before a single note of jazz guitar was played.
Beautiful Washburn there, Dan❣️
Glad to hear business is booming for Jonny off the back of that brilliant series.
The dude is a genius! Amazing what a difference actually knowing what you’re doing makes.
that was sick - perfect blend of knowledge, skill and style. Lovely
I get some very thin double stick tape from my local hobby shop, it works very well to secure wooden bridges in a non-damaging way. When I've found the right intonation spot, I mark the perimeter with blue tape, add the tape to the bridge press it lightly on the top and I'm done, no need for pinning ;-)
the geekery makes it more fun to watch thanks Dan!
I’ve heard a lot of luthiers complain about changing pickups on those style guitars. He changed out those pretty easily. Well done.
It's always great to watch and listen to somebody who really knows their stuff. And I learned sooo much from this.
That sounds great. But since the name doesn't say That Pedal Show, then I'm guessing that this is a scam :)
One of the best posts ever. Great to watch and brilliantly informative. Awesome as always Dan!!!
I just love these episode. So inspiring to watch. And great work by Monty.
The nicest video I've ever seen.
Thanks for taking us on this journey Dan. He did a fantastic job with the upgrade and setup. It sounds beautiful. Looking forward to more videos of your playing some jazz tones on it.
The string check is the best thing I have learned today. Wow. I'm also going to have a US version of the motorcycle polish. That's a worthwhile mission.
I really enjoyed this episode! As always so much value! Thank you and Matt for letting us observe this process!
All of the guitars in the world! But one to practice on, study with, and get to know for 5 years. Lucky!
Beautiful guitar, some very choice chords and notes, and lots of lovely genuine smiles from both you and Matt. Great show, and a fab insight into what a little TLC can do to a tired, neglected instrument. Keep on Jazzing Dan!
Holy crap, I would fly across the Atlantic for a setup from this guy.
Hurray! Loved this video! So fun to see the transformation. Plus I learned loads: Jeff Beck trick, how to start a screw without stripping, different cleaning products, quick way to check string height. As Dan would say, "Magic!"
