Weird question probably, but do you work on straight fine texture hair? I've had my locs for a little while and have been maintaining them myself, because my original "loctician" did some things I didn't like, I've never returned to anyone. You seem so knowledgeable and your work is beautiful! I'd love to possible visit your New Jersey location.

Listen to your hair it will talk to you it will tell you when it’s time for a wash or a twist or time for some oils etc... Don’t overdue it. Enjoy your journey

I started my locs years ago not knowing the history of locs and its maintenance. I was getting my hair done every 4-5 weeks. Today, I noticed some of my locs are thinning. I was doing it all wrong. I use to think when the locs are loaded with new growth I said not my hair. I was in the neatness category. After looking at this video, my hairstylist probably won’t see me until late fall early winter…THANK YOU SO MUCH, YANNIE..wow..I was doing it all wrong. Money can be used for something else…THANK YOU

Hi Yannie, thank you for your videos, I love them. I was shook when you showed the last client's previous picture....to see the damage that 2 years of over-manipulation caused is frightening. I'm thankful that when I started my second loc journey, I wasn't interested in neatness. I semi-freeform and only go to a loctitian once or twice a year. It's the disrespectful look for me always!

Thank you Yannie, you’re an amazing lady.
I’ve just done a clients locs which turned out to look fantastic, 2 weeks after installation, I neatened them up after the 1st wash. I’m very much a perfectionist for my clients hair I use no products and recommend specific shampoos only with none of those nasties and I love creating the neat look, but I also knew we would have to wait for more messiness and new growth to keep the thickness of the locs ongoing and not to cause any stress at the roots. I’m so glad what I thought was right and seeing this video for confirmation is just everything!
I love watching your videos for education and confirmation purposes.
Much love and respect 🙏 Thank you

I love to watch your videos because I learn so much. I’ll make sure to not do it often. As for too tight, these locticians don’t listen in FL. Hair stylists down here do what they want and get very angry, offended, and sometimes belligerent when you show that you’re unhappy with the bad results stemming from them not honoring your request. I really want to learn how to do my own hair

This is so enlightening Yannie, thank you! Amandla here from South Africa 🙋🏾‍♀, and I just got my new locs done two days ago. I've been beating myself up for going for thick locs because my volume is just so small (I think I have less than 40 locs in total 🙈), however you mentioning that starting thick will be good for my hair in the long run since it provides a solid and stable foundation has made me feel so much better! Also, I am glad I saw this video right at the beginning of my journey, because now I know that I should embrace new growth and allow at least 2-3 month before styling.

Thanks for this video. I haven't retwisted my hair since the top of the year (I think. It's been a while) and haven't washed it since 3/30. Because I'm going on vacation, I have been contemplating washing and lightly retwisting it. My locs are only 10 months old and this is the first time I've gone on vacation with my locs. I know I will be in the ocean and pool water so I will definitely wash it when I get home. This solidified it for me. I'll rock my natural, disrespectful locs and enjoy not having to worry about styling, products (that I don't use anyway), getting my hair wet, the retwist unraveling, etc. Thanks again!

Sisterlocks are a bit different because the base is smaller. If go too long before rety you will definitely have thinning at the roots and your more likely to have holes when u rety which cause cause breaking off. My hair grows super fast so I rety every month and I literally only do 1 or 2 turns so I have very little loose hair at the base to snap. Just a thought

Thanks for the information on hair locks. Allow your hair to grow before you have it twisted.

Wow. I'm glad i came across this. I leave my hair for months then people tell me it needs doing. But i noticed that it gets thinner. I will now know to leave it alone. I've had locs 4 times now and then cut them off because they get thinner

Were you re-twisting too often? This process seems unpredictable because people have different type of texture and size diameters; so it doesn’t always mean tight twisting caused it. I notice Mother Nature twists the hair naturally without any help. So perhaps the person isn’t aware of this and are doubling the process; however when it’s done naturally not sure what means of preventing thinning can be implemented to avoid it since hair type and texture plays a part besides the parting length. So, when one observes that the new growth have slowed up than I think it is time to check ones diet, stop whatever re-twist they were doing, drink plenty water. and cut back on wetting the roots since the water causes a natural twist, and each time water is applied to moisture, it’s like getting it re-twisted. Water is a product. However, it doesn’t do justice to some people who have more oil in their hair than others who need more oil. Finally , how could anyone speak for all cases when everyone’s genetics are different plus this process is trial and error for each individual. One thing we do know the more healthier one starts the journey the better success it will be allowing the hair to free form without all the crazy re-twist that weakens the roots due to the hair is constantly in a locked down environment not free. That’s my observational experience.

I wish you resided in the DMV. My children and I are natural. It would be nice to be able to go to someone who is knowledgeable and who cares about the quality of the hair instead of just trying to style for cuteness. I suffer from Alopecia Areata so I never go to stylists. I just wash and take care of my scalp to prevent inflammation and I never re-twist because of my baldness I have throughout my scalp. I’ve had Alopecia since I was 14.

Thank You, Sister! I started locing in 2007 and half cut about 7 inches around 5 years ago. At some point, I REALIZED my love looked differently...there were more of them and they were much thinner than my originals. You are the First time I've heard WHY this has happened.😑

Yannie, You know you're doing something right, I actually sat her and read EVERY COMMENT..Keep it up Sister..On a Loc Journey for My two young men...One has fine hair from front to crown..What should I do to thicken? I retwist maybe every three months (loc'd less than a year).

Yannie I just want you to know that you’ve been such a guidance in the loc community. I started with Microlocs and ended up combined them and I recently went 4 months without a retwist ans I must say my hair is the healthiest it’s ever been. I’m going to go another 4 months again. Thanks queen for your free education! ❤️
