I worked for E.D.P (who used to own Beauchief Hall and Peggs Cottage) from 2003 to 2010 so know that area very well indeed, having driven up and down past the Abbey every day for over 7 years. There are some beautiful walks around the Hall which are especially spectacular in the Winter, when it snowed. My favourite memories were looking down from my office to see the Deer roaming the back fields. Halcyon days indeed.
They used the stones from the original demolished parts of the Abbey to build Beauchief Hall (not saying that is why it was demolished) also I Grew up fairly close by (woodseats so far from posh, and on lowedges now) we used to spend summer holidays etc roaming the woods and looking for balls to sell back to golfers, There was a slightly eerie feeling when it went dark round some parts but that might have been the stories of the Mad monk & white lady of BEE CHIEF (that is how we locals pronounce it) which have been passed down over 100s of years. Incidentally, we were playing golf there about 15-20 years ago and someone was doing an archaeological dig it was bang in front of the abbey but on the other side of the driveway/lane as you cross to the other side of the course, love to know what was found.
Usually people built homes out of the stones left by the dissolution. Stronger parts of the original building were probably left (too hard to knock down).

It’s always easier to pinpoint a founding date in documentation rather than a built date, plus you can’t decipher dates from stone like you can with wood… you can only look at the architectural styles to give an indication… it certainly looks 12th century or thereafter to me. The tower remains because (like all churches) it has the thickest walls - it acts as a structural pin with all the thinner nave walls running off it. You can see this clearly in the pillars of the central towers at York and Lincoln minsters. Incidentally, as you will know, Roche abbey still has its towers in part for the same reason. Good observation with the window Tim. I had never notice it before, but it looks like it is an original window case, with refitted glass. You can see the little stubs coming off the lancet arch, they formed the window tracery… probably broken by iconoclasts (I assume that’s how the abbey met its end). An interesting part of Sheffield history, though I seem to remember it’s a part of Derbyshire that we swallowed up?
Will I have driven past their so often and didn't know the Abbey was down that road. The whole are around its so interesting. Can we still get in the Steetley church or is it locked off to us?
@ I was in there just the other day Tim, so it’s open to my knowledge. I think the key holder lives over the road, so it’s hardly an arduous journey for them.
@@timawells Ordinarily 10-4 daily if my memory serves me right. I have been trying to get into Worksop priory for the longest time, Tim - but it never seem to be open. It’s Norman too, but obviously on a cathedral like scale. Have you ever made it in? If I remember right, the bloke who built Worksop priory also built the original Sheffield parish church, as well as the Castle. I am always quite annoyed that the priory was wasted on Worksop rather than Sheffield… mind you, the council probably would have levelled it long ago if it were the other way around.

Hi tim good video mate ... Congratulations on 4 k subscribers 🎉
Thanks Andy. The Genie grants wishes. You will enjoy Mosborough High St.
Thanks Tim, a great Christmas present, when I was a lad we used go round there, as we lived on Greenhill Ave!
Glad you enjoyed it Tim. I am off into Derbyshire christmas day.
Hi Tim. Thanks for doing this one. When I played around there as a lad it was called, “Beechiff”. Hope this helps.

100% pronounced Beachif .

It was scary around the back of the hall with the wind. I said if my times up its up.
I also remember filling my Wellingtons with Frog Spawn in the ponds then putting my feet in them too. As a 10 year old when living on Lowedges :-)
Golf courses and quarries always hide old megalithic structures
