    Another cracking vlog Tim, Castleton is beautiful even on a cold day. So many pubs and lots of great food, loved visiting Castleton with girlfriends to show them the beautiful place.

      Thanks. Only issue is the sound occasionally takes the edge off for me, its nice to sit back and watch the videos myself and see what I have missed. Not sure if my boots or a click from somewhere, I will get it fixed on future videos. I have always loved Castleton. Hathersage coming an over looked jewel. Best Tim

      the sounds to me, make it authentic, not distracting.
      All great places, Hope, Hathersage, Castleton, Bakewell, lucky to have them all on my door stop growing up, took it for granted until I was old enough to realise what gems these places are. Real estate has always been expensive in these areas as they are so beautiful.

    That's a nice place to go for Christmas Day Tim, always loved Castleton. I had a few days at the Cheddar Cheese 2 or 3 years back, and they really looked after me. It's a lot posher than when I was young, and with a lot more holiday cottages. I first went to Castleton in about 1964, on an open backed bus (they had an outer door they could close in winter). It's a shame the bus service isn't as good as in the past, (they ran until nearly midnight once), but still very convenient for Sheffielders, and as you say, absolutely great for walking. I remember having a 3am lock-in at The Castle in 1979. St Edmund's church is actually very interesting, with a 'Norman Arch', and a collection of very rare old bibles (sadly no longer on display). The churchyard features local names like 'Hall', with Castleton still being dominated by a few old families (or that was certainly the case until a few decades ago). I had a girlfriend who was a guide at one of the mines, and well into the 80's, it was a bit of an insular and in-bred place. Back in the 60's, the entrance to Peveril Castle was through a farm, and you were encouraged to toss a few coins in a milk-churn. I dread to think what admission costs now. I always tell folks that the climb isn't worth it, the best view is from below! Sad to think how many lads from those small villages, went off to fight in France, probably never having been very far before, and never returned. That's a good chippy that Tim! That's the River Noe. Sadly, my internet connection is awful today, so I'm going to have to bail out on you mate, but thanks for the visit to Castleton, and I hope you have a Happy New Year.

      @JackBlack-gh5yf interesting history, thank you. I didn't go there till late 70s as a kid. Was always a nice day out but long journey by bus. Used to go a lot in the 80s.
      I worked with a guy once who grew up in the Hope Valley. He said to me that people only knew or talked about what was happening in "the Valley" as they called it. Very insular, like you say.

      Thanks for your informative comment Jack. Hasn't internet come to Leeds yet? Its all about milking people of money now and where is the good bus service to get people out here without cars. Have a great remainder to the rest of the year. Best Tim

      @@AlexMitchell-i1g If I hadn't lived on that side of Sheffield, I doubt I'd have got out there so young Alex, it was always a struggle dragging my dad out of his armchair! The last time I visited, I went out on the train to Hope, but decided I'd rather come back on the bus, as it was a quiet Sunday morning.
      I can well believe that my friend! 😁

    looks good but i always found Castleton to be a bit of a tourist trap with nowhere to park?

    • @timawells
      @timawells  15 годин тому +2

      Monday to Friday you can park close by. Saturday and Sunday and bank holidays you can park for free either side of the old Mount Or road and walk from there.

      We went yesterday, definitely was. I like Castleton, went there as a kid in 70s and 80s but yesterday really put me off. We went to where the Speedwell Cavern car park was and it was busy, ignorant tourists and litter. I prefer other parts of the Peak District now, away from the crowds.

      Lovely video Tim. It's really nice there when it's not busy. We've visited on Christmas day occasionally but went to Hillsborough Park this year with the dogs and there was a good vibe. Kids with new toy scooters and people out walking without a phone in sight. Like a blast from the past. All the best

    I'd like to know the figures as regards second homes and actual residents. Have local people being priced out by out of town yuppies.
    I do know in the countryside, you are either piss poor or mega rich. You basically work the land or own it!
    Stables are the same, you either own it or shovel muck in it!
    Talking of stables, its interesting to see how the demographic of these places has changed from small farming communities to rich peoples playgrounds. Small holdings are snapped up by wealthy townies wanting to buy that idyllic lifestyle with a range rover and horses etc.
    Not many farmers in their muck in those pubs now enjoying a pint after work!

    • @timawells
      @timawells  15 годин тому +2

      The pubs aren't the same Richard. Many of the locations seem to be hired out for a few days as holiday homes.

    • @richardburns1287
      @richardburns1287 15 годин тому +4

      @timawells same as Tideswell and Bakewell Tim, you walk around an idyllic place and these cottages are empty, clearly had millions spent on them, but empty. Many pubs yuppiefied and 'managed'.
      It's like Dore, once a farming outpost, now all the farms are farms in name only, they are rich boys homes with a few horses, that's why they buy them, 'she' wants horses Tim 👍

    • @timawells
      @timawells  15 годин тому +1

      @@richardburns1287 Makes me sick Richard. But probably always owned by the rich to rent to the workers, now they can make more money from weekenders. Some one had fly tipped on surprise view corner, but the bag was too big to carry back to the car and I would have got car pranged stopping on that dangerous corner.

    • @AlexMitchell-i1g
      @AlexMitchell-i1g 15 годин тому +2

      Same happening in Scottish Highlands over last 20 years unfortunately. Locals getting older, kids leaving to go elsewhere and properties bought up (cheaply for those with money) as holiday lets and holiday homes or 2nd homes for rich people. Sad the way its's going, I see it becoming like a big playground for tourists and rich people.

    • @timawells
      @timawells  14 годин тому +1
