This video had me wistful from your editing and narration alone. Crazy how far we’ve come in just this small time of 25 years or so. Can’t believe this little free game managed to muster up so many emotional ties through references alone. Love it so much and makes me excited when I get a PS5.... maybe 2 years from now haha
Seems weird that, whenever I end up getting a PS5 (usually go a year or so after launch), one of the games I'll be really looking forward to playing is a tech demo for a new controller..
I’ve never smiled so much playing a game. At first I thought I’d play it for maybe 5-10 minutes and move on to the other games I have, but I’m finding myself coming back to Astro and completing everything.
Ok now: 1) By now, I actually can't help but admit that Astrobots are absolutely adorable. When they first appeared in the Playroom, I didn't think much of them cause I thought that it would be a one-time thing, but now I actually want more Astrobots games. 2) ASOBI Team did an amazing job. I now wonder who was a game designer behind Astro's Playroom and I would've loved it if they did more games. 3) There is something surreal about not just a AAA game to feel genuine and sincere, but for a damn tech demo. Seriously, I can't remember the last AAA game that felt like there were real passionate people behind it, but when you showed that PS1 console with a signed memory card - I felt that... 4) What game is referenced at 5:14?
I could not agree more. The ps1 was the first console I played, and was what got me into gaming. Also my favorite artifact was the ps1 memory card. "So long overnight pausing." Man we did not get our first memory card until we got a ps2 a few years later, and it was for the ps2.
I just got my PS5 yesterday and played this since i remembered everyone mentioning how good it was at launch. It's crazy how much feels different as just a viewer listening to this video again, simply from having played the game.

So I only just played this game this week and I can't BELIEVE how much I loved this. I knew it'd be solid, but holy shit I did not know how much joy it'd bring me. Wholesome AF.
This was a gut punch of nostalgia. A good one. I turned 25 a week ago, and my first system was a Ps1. I remember struggling with crash bandicoot, crashing through gran turismo, and being absolutely mind boggled by the multi-disc set up of FF7. Such good memories. I think I'll boot up the ole ps1 and play twisted metal 4 with my kids. For old times sake.
Not only this game shows off the controler's capabilities but also shows up the history of the brand in such a unique way, with the bots doing cosplay of the characters they represent and the weird periferals as collectables. Everything seems so right with this game.
Playing it the first time I cried when I went to the Playstation Labo after I finished it and seeing all that PS stuff, some of which I had when I was growing up. What's even more amazing is the fact you can hit each one of them to interact with them (like hitting the consoles and the bootup sounds of each console will play). I was expecting a minor tech demo from the game when I played it as I wait for my other games to download, but I was fully surprised and engaged with the game until the very end. Well done, Team Asobi!
Started playing Astro’s Playroom today and it’s a great game and trip down memory lane. I’d really like to see them create a full game like this. It gave me the feeling of Mario 64 back when I first got my N64 back in 1996. Excellent!

Astros playroom is amazing and such a nostalgia trip, it constantly blew me away from walking on different surfaces to feeling raindrops but the one thing that absolutely blew me away was finding the ps2 and opening and closing the disk tray sounds and feels exactly the same I can remember as a kid. Also I was extremely disappointed the murals that you unlock in game aren’t available in poster form from the ps store. Just got a PS5 and what an incredible game this is. I wish Nintendo would do something similar, imagine all the consoles and accessories you could collect in a Mario version of this, it would be incredible
This game was absolutely incredible for a number of reasons. As a kid I never really stuck with one console type, so I have had various different consoles and handheld made by all the different companies. Ds, 360, Ps1, ps2, ps3, Xbox one, etc. But no matter what it was, it seems like playstations were always the ones that kept me entertained the longest. Astrobot is also the very first example of a game I actually wanted to 100% complete. I've never actually gotten every trophy in a video game simply because it never seemed worth it and I wanted to get on with another game once I had finished a story. Astrobot is the only game I have ever gotten a platinum trophy on simply because it was so encouraging through gameplay alone to want to do and experience absolutely everything. The game was a magical experience and brought me right back to my happiest of memories. I'm looking forward to everything that sony has planned for this console in the future! Here's hoping.
I don't have a PS5 yet but Astro's Playroom is honestly the game I'm most excited to play. I just wish the higher ups at Sony could see the value in making previous PS gens be BC.

It was such a nostalgia trip playing this game, I almost cried when I saw the fully detailed PS1, I must've spent 5 minutes just flipping it up and down, analysing every bit of it, just incredible, and was the same for the other consoles.
My first experience with the playstation consoles was the playstation 3. in turn, the first level I played of Astro's Playroom was the GPU Jungle. When i heard the orchestral warm-up at the end of the level, looking into the plain sky, I genuinely started to cry. I felt like a little kid again, about to watch my dad play littlebigplanet. it was awesome.
What made astro bot different is that it landed in to the cartoony side wich I liked alot. I feel like too much company's focus on realistic to the point they look the same thing. Although u could argue about nintendo they weren't fully using it.
The biggest problem with Playstation All Star Battle Royale was the lack of love about everything weird ... it is funny "this game feels like sakurai made it" was something that came to my head while playing Astro's Playroom
When I was playing this gaming my words were "This is a celebration of everything PlayStation" and it was made with so much love and passion that you cannot help but love it.
Yet another great video, I really enjoy how you are able to turn your emotions and deep self-reflection into words that help to make me feel those same emotions albeit to maybe a lesser extent but still a genuine feeling of connection to what you are saying. You have a gift thank you for sharing it with the world.
I hope this becomes like the PlayStations version of Mario maybe it can have online multiplayers but mainly single player stuff I remember playing for the first time and just saw the potential and beauty of it seeing the character years ago didn’t think much of it but now I was amazed
Seriously the whole time I played this, I kept thinking "why am I having so much fun playing a frigging 'here's how to use your console' game". It's honestly so joyful, cute and a great "relax" game!
I wish more developers would utilize all the cool features of the dualsense controllers like this game does such as using the motion control and touch pad
i haven't had this much fun with a pack in since Wii Sports. What was just a simple tech demo turned into such a loving tribute to the large legacy and history of PlayStation! It almost makes me wish Nintendo would do something like this p
I played the game when I got the ps5 not expecting it to be anything special. But it was surprisingly fun. I played it with my brother but it was really well made. The design, the levels, the new controller features, and the soundtrack. It was a good game and I’d recommend it. It’s simple and genially a great game
Wow, I haven't even noticed all those references in Astro Playroom! Demon Souls, Death Stranding and I guess there's much more too see if you pay attention. I guess I'll need to go back to this game and give it a second chance :) Thanks for the video!
It hit me hard with the artifacts and the posters in the lab room :) I kinda have some doubt other developers will take full advantage of the console capabilities like Astro Playroom did though
The HD Rumble of Okami on Switch really sold me on haptics as part of how you play, and although I still hold that split controllers (be it joycon or any of the VR controllers) is a more natural way to feel it it's still pretty nice on a console basis (you should play Okami in handheld mode for that touch screen, and honestly you should play Okami on Switch for it) or just a controller like in Astro. I understand the motors are slightly better on PS5, but honestly I haven't felt a distinct difference yet, they're both such a step up from old rumble it's hard to feel the much more minor different between the two... just gotta hope that now 2 controller have it more developers actually make use of the feature. Also, man the PSP Go had such an incredible form factor, if the PS Vita was that shape I'd have played it way more... Christ if the PSP was that shape I'd've probably played it way more, but coming out right at the end of the console's life when second hand copies was the most cost effective way to buy games was such a bad move, if the machine wasn't bargain binned so quick I doubt I'd've even bought the PSP Go, but being so cheap I could afford to pay a bit extra for the games I wanted... and just what a lovely little machine it was to hold.
I can't Believe you would accuse me of lying about owning my beloved PocketStation, which I played constantly! There were so many PocketMotion classics, like Anyway, loved this video! I had a strong nostalgic reaction to this and had to go make sure I wasn't alone. My first reaction was this "oh wow, what a corporate piece of garbage," thinking all the intensely realistic models of PlayStation history were trying to sell me more stuff after I'd already mortgaged my house to pay for a PS5. But seeing the backdrop to the PS4 (and then the PS2 and the classic PS1 startup noise) quickly changed my mind. Astro's such a genuinely good game and celebration of nostalgia that it's hard for me not to include its value as a game in the purchase, this is something that could easily have been greedily shilled to PlayStation loyalists for $40 or more or a demo with the rest locked behind a paywall, but whoever made the call must still have a soul and a desire to share their enthusiasm for this console and its forebears with players.
Already beat the game, but hearing you talk about it makes me want to give ti a second run. You're right, the way it feels is like nothing else so far.
Everyone this character is not new this is the sequel to Astro bot rescue mission for the PlayStation VR and you can only use the PlayStation controller no motion controls
Thanks for this, I felt all the same nostalgic beats you just laid out, such beautiful memories growing up through each generation and the games and friends that came with it. I can’t wait to play when I get a PS5. BUT CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHY I PLAYED A MANTA RAY FOR MANY HOURS IN 1998!?
@@WritingOnGames do yourself a favor and get a psvr man. You'll have to run it through a ps4 till you get the camera adapter, but Astrobot is an incredible platformer and VR experience. Watch the nitrorad video if you haven't to get a primer
That shot of the PSPGo made me a little sad. For all its failures as a commercial product, it was actually a very neat and capable system and remains my preferred way to play PSP games... though I must admit that's largely because it was so easy to hack and mod. Still, it was ahead of its time, allowing you to save your gaming states indefinitely (I remember picking it up after it had completely drained of battery and reset, but it still had me right where I left off in Disgaea four years prior), and had an awesome formfactor that made it supremely pocketable, something that no other portable console could match to this day (not even the original DS was this damn portable). Its screen was also better than standard PSPs due to its higher pixel density and superior contrast. I seriously loved that little beast... too bad it was doomed to fail due to bad business decisions, something the Vita would also suffer from.
The haptic feedback in the Dual Sense is the same, if not slightly worse, than in the Joy-Cons and the Switch Pro Controller. Sure, Astro's Playroom makes pretty good use of it, but that doesn't make the tech any more novel.
This whole game is a paradox of existence. Sony wants to celebrate its history, but won't let us actually play those classic games on our new Playstation. I do hope this game gets a full-length sequel. Full levels based on Playstation history, not just these collectibles.

At least we got a reference to Gravity Rush in this game
What lack of love? The game was crammed with nods to Sony's past. Heck the final boss was an obscure reference in itself.
Sakurai loves all his games specially older smash games, melee is the one he loves the most. :)
@@unicorntomboy9736 So did PSAS. Kat was a playable character in that game.
Lovely vid.
After 3 years. . . I just got my first PS5.
It is great to see a love letter to gamers like this.
Cheers from Mexico City
When I was playing this gaming my words were "This is a celebration of everything PlayStation" and it was made with so much love and passion that you cannot help but love it.
Yet another great video, I really enjoy how you are able to turn your emotions and deep self-reflection into words that help to make me feel those same emotions albeit to maybe a lesser extent but still a genuine feeling of connection to what you are saying. You have a gift thank you for sharing it with the world.
It has a good soundtrack, too. Memory Meadow 1, based on Follow Me from Astro Bot Rescue Mission, is such a sweet tune.
Amazing writing as always bossman
I hope this becomes like the PlayStations version of Mario maybe it can have online multiplayers but mainly single player stuff I remember playing for the first time and just saw the potential and beauty of it seeing the character years ago didn’t think much of it but now I was amazed
PS5 is my first Playstation and still this game somehow made me feel nostalgic. Such a fun tribute to the history of this console series.
Seriously the whole time I played this, I kept thinking "why am I having so much fun playing a frigging 'here's how to use your console' game".
It's honestly so joyful, cute and a great "relax" game!
I won't get a PS5 until a few months, but damn just watching this video made me smile. I grew up with all of this stuff. Can't wait to play it too.
I feel like some people might eventually try to beat Astro's playroom blindfolded with the different rumbles for different ground types helping a lot.
this brought me just as much joy as little big planet back in the day, wish it was a full long game
I wish more developers would utilize all the cool features of the dualsense controllers like this game does such as using the motion control and touch pad
Astro is the best commercial i've played
Can you image that in a few years this game will be seen as nostalgia
Oh whell I guess it only took me 8 months :)
Honestly one of my favourite games, I love completing it for friends of mine that arent bothered to play it :)
i haven't had this much fun with a pack in since Wii Sports. What was just a simple tech demo turned into such a loving tribute to the large legacy and history of PlayStation! It almost makes me wish Nintendo would do something like this p
This actually looks great. Can't wait to play it when the PS5 come out in 2021
I played the game when I got the ps5 not expecting it to be anything special. But it was surprisingly fun. I played it with my brother but it was really well made. The design, the levels, the new controller features, and the soundtrack. It was a good game and I’d recommend it. It’s simple and genially a great game
Playing this brought a smile to my face that I haven’t had in a long time. It’s so fricking good and it’s free. That says a lot.
Can't believe you guys got this and we got 1,2 switch
50$ for a shitty tech demo versus a free, packed-in celebration of playstation history and showcase of incredible tech.
Wow, I haven't even noticed all those references in Astro Playroom! Demon Souls, Death Stranding and I guess there's much more too see if you pay attention. I guess I'll need to go back to this game and give it a second chance :) Thanks for the video!
It’s a small game, but it’s packed in there with reverence for the many different PS games over the years. Absolutely wonderful.
If you (gently) tap one side of the PS5 controller on something while holding the other you can feel the suspended rumble packs move.
this game is phenominal. im glad i got a ps5
Also, the game is just... freakin' adorable. XD
Or at least the VR version that Dan played on PlayFrame was.
I can't Believe you would accuse me of lying about owning my beloved PocketStation, which I played constantly! There were so many PocketMotion classics, like
Anyway, loved this video!
1:56 *Remarkably well-thought out mean of selling you already impressive tech, as the 2010 textures pops into existence*
Already beat the game, but hearing you talk about it makes me want to give ti a second run. You're right, the way it feels is like nothing else so far.
1:52 HOLY SHIT A VIB RIBBOM REFERENCE!!!!! THEY HAVE TO MAKE A NEW ONE NOW
Literally one of the best I've ever played. Great JOB WHOEVER MADE IT!!
Team Asobi dev team:)
@@jamesvancam nice
Everyone this character is not new this is the sequel to Astro bot rescue mission for the PlayStation VR and you can only use the PlayStation controller no motion controls
Can’t believe I’ve only just fired it up the last week. Great game and great for a 4 year old just getting into console games.
anyone else cought the Vib-Ribbon reference at 1:51?
Me.
Best game currently for the ps5
Nice video, i sense no cap. I love astro's playroom, im considering buying the extended version.
The fact you went in thinking this would just be some run-of-the-mill tech demo really shows you did not play Astrobot Rescue Mission.
I mean... sure? I didn't!
@@WritingOnGames do yourself a favor and get a psvr man. You'll have to run it through a ps4 till you get the camera adapter, but Astrobot is an incredible platformer and VR experience. Watch the nitrorad video if you haven't to get a primer
Playing this was a fun trip down memory lane. But all it did was remind me how many of Sony's IPs are dormant and unused, sometimes for decades.
I cannot help but think 8:15 was an Umbrella Academy reference
Nope!
They did the same for VR with Astro Bot VR game.
Man I can’t wait to play this… PS1 was the 1st 🥇console I played!
The haptic feedback in the Dual Sense is the same, if not slightly worse, than in the Joy-Cons and the Switch Pro Controller. Sure, Astro's Playroom makes pretty good use of it, but that doesn't make the tech any more novel.
This game HAS to be every PS 5 owner's first game!
I didn't care at all for this game at first but the references won me over
am I a weirdo that I turned all vibrate options off since day 1 lol
This video is making me really sad as I know I won’t be able to get my hands on a ps5 until summer, god Sony puts so much work into their consoles
The VR Astro game is the best platformer of the generation and I'm including Mario Odyssey in that. It's an utterly sublime experience
This made me depressed but slightly 😁
I still don't understand 6:06?
Heavy Rain.
This whole game is a paradox of existence. Sony wants to celebrate its history, but won't let us actually play those classic games on our new Playstation.
I do hope this game gets a full-length sequel. Full levels based on Playstation history, not just these collectibles.
