It's interesting how Sony went from no one cares about rumble on the PS3 to making the most complex haptic feedback on a controller to date. The question remains if devs will still bother with it in several years. We typically see these features used at first but then dropped over time.
I think it will depend on how much people like the feature. If the demand for it becomes high publishers will advertise haptic feedback features to sell their games. Also Sony had an ongoing lawsuit with a company for the rumble implementation at the time, they added back rumble to DS3 when it was resolved.
Believe it or not, the analog stick and rumble motor were both considered gimmicks when the N64 pad was first introduced. Now they are both essential features of any modern controller. In the case of the triggers and haptic feedback the ease of implementation is way higher than that of second screens or motion sensors. @kishenkoolskills90 So the SSD also improves my internet connection?! Amazing! /s Jokes aside tho xD I know the SSD will make games faster to install, but download speeds in my country aren't that big, so I could probably finish Astro Playroom and the game still had a bit left to download. It is a welcome change but my biggest "bottleneck" will still be internet download speed. Spider Man PS4 for example (Complete edition, whatever it is called) took about 4-5 hours to download and install all iirc? So depending on the game it will probably take that long. Maybe not enough to totally finish a 5h game but still plenty of time. Sad but that's life.

@An Easy-Bake Oven I can see how NintendoLand might not have been great single player but I had so much fun in MP. It had some really great single player gsmes too like Metroid Blast being the best console flight controls I can think of since you can control more axis simultaneously. It was also Nintendos closest Fzero game in over a decade :(
Your enthusiasm for the game has pushed this in my mind from a "Oh that's included. Maybe I'll check it out someday" to "This looks great and I can't wait to try it!" Thanks for the first look, John!
This is how you do a preview... hyped. So much detail - a free game with this level of features and ideas... utilising Ps5 features! Can’t wait! Great stuff digital foundry!
I was always a Nintendo guy, since I always felt like they really tried to innovate, while Sony and Microsoft just used more power and nothing wlse in new consoles. Seeing what Sony does with this controller therefore really makes me consider buying this more.
I think Sony realized consoles were hitting the limits of graphical fidelity at a consumer price, so they decided on improving the overall gaming experience. Everything they've focused on (super-speed ssd, haptics, tension triggers, 3d audio) all deepen immersion. I'm really want a Sony 1st party studio to make a horror game using all those features. That would be awesome.
Every company has their perks. It’s just hard to beat PlayStation for the exclusives and adult games. Not saying Nintendo or Xbox is bad, just seems like PlayStation gives you the most cool stuff if you’re an adult.
Sony have always been 2nd to nintendo in terms of innovation and "gimmicks" but theyre 100% above xbox. With the touchpad, contoller speaker and six axis and VR
Definitely the first thing I'm going to play on the PS5! So much history throughout the whole stage! DualSense seriously looks like it's the best controller ever!
DF is a channel I absolutely appreciate. One of the only true UA-cam channels I can respect their work, like every member of the team, and enjoy almost all their content. Having a PC/Ps4 and Xbox I get to make the most of DF, and I only wish there was more content, but I feel that would be almost impossible for you guys. I can not STAND vloggers and all the narcissistic youtubers, or the ridiculous gaming channels where they shout at everything like a child, and whilst I spend a long time on YT to me, you guys are the face of it.
I've owned a PS5 since December last year. Seven months later and every once in a while I go back and re-install this game. It's just so simple yet so fun. The first time you wear the suit and need to close the zipper, the vibration is just exactly what you feel in real life. Just fantastic.
With the extra controller features over the previous gen console and ultra fast SSD hardware Sony is really innovating, and both versions of the console run at the same speed - just with or without a Blu-Ray Drive.
Yeah! The existence of massive day 0 patches really skewed the concept of games going gold it seems. The bypassing of these ridiculous patches is about the only thing going for stadia at the moment......Can't wait to get the game and wait ages for the 30 gig patch to download and install.......but that's where we are wiith game development at the moment....
Genuinely nice to hear you gushing about a free, launch day pack-in title. This has triggered all the same pre-Mario-esque excitement I'd get before getting my hands on a new Nintendo title in years gone by. Very excited to try the new controller. Sounds like it has the potential to take immersion to the next level.
And if this was in a Playstation showcase being live streamed people would say "BORING" people really need to try stuff before judging. Honestly I love this game I'm proud of the team!
Just platinumed it. I am still amazed every time Astro ice skates. It feels like ice skating does. I don’t understand how they got it to feel so accurate. I will have to buy NHL if they add that feature. Walking through snow feels crunchy like it should. Sand feels like sand, tall grass feels like tall grass, and mud feels like mud. When you’re rolling around in the ball and you get on the rocky surface, it feels like you’re scraping against rocks. I am so much more impressed by this controller than I expected to be. The console is actually louder than I expected, and while it is lightning fast, I think I expected even more due to the way they spoke about the SSD. However, the controller is everything it is billed as. I am blown away.

I hope that Developers will finally use the gyro for gyro aim, its just such an overlooked feature of the ps3 and ps4 controllers and only nintedo is using gyro aims despite sony having it way longer in there controllers
I only experienced it on the PS Vita with Uncharted Golden Abyss where you could tilt the system to get fine aiming and I've missed it ever since, it felt so incredibly intuitive and natural. With the controller gyros it's such a no brainer, I really hope they use it for PS5 games.
Gyro aim implementation in TLOU Part II is truly incredible it made my grounded playthrough amazing. Also Sony used gyro aim in pretty much every Vita first party game like Uncharted Golden Abyss, Killzone Mercenary, and Gravity Rush. I think the reason it didn't caught on with PS4 is parity across PS and Xbox games and well, it is more of a necessity with handhelds that have small joysticks where aiming is extra difficult.

Jokes aside tho xD I know the SSD will make games faster to install, but download speeds in my country aren't that big, so I could probably finish Astro Playroom and the game still had a bit left to download.
Sad but that's life.
sackboy as well then with ps plus we get bugsnax and the 19 or so ps4 games is pretty dope honestly
@@epilef120 it will i mean they have new hardware that will make downloading over your internet much better/faster too
@@melxb oh yeah, there are definitely some great PS4 and small ps5 titles to check.
I'm very curious on Infamous Second Son that I'll play because of Collection, Destruction All-stars being a PS+ coming is also neat and others that I forgot at the moment.
Great stuff for next gen =]
@@melxb yeah but... Even with hardware that will allow for better connectivity, if my internet still sucks the PS5 won't do that much difference. A higher ceiling doesn't necessarily makes my furniture higher. It can allow for higher furniture but not necessarily increase everything.
Sure I'll see improvements but nothing substantial.
I would be happy to be wrong tho.
I platinumed this game in one sitting, it was that fun and addicting. Plus at the end of the credits, it said "See you in our next adventure"
I'm hoping for a fully fledged sequel. Man those adaptive triggers are awesome.
To be honest, this game is the exact opposite of 1-2 Switch in every aspect.
1-2 Switch feels like a simple game that comes in full price, this game is a complex game included in every PS5.
The purpose of both games are the same: showcasing the new controller.
Only digital foundry would find that you can play and older build of Astro. This is what I've been waiting for. Keep up the great work guys.
Great to see the love shown for Rescue Mission. It's my favourite game of the generation and up with Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 in entertainment factor. Can't wait to get back to waving over enthusiastically at the little fella
Even during my platinum run of Rescue Mission I couldn't help but to stop and smile and wave back at Captain Astro, even if it ruined my shot at a trophy.
@@TimFisheroo When he landed on my visor in Beachside Boogie I was laughing, waving and in complete awe of the intrepid little guy. He's just so loveable
@@flannelsykes0 I do that deliberately now every time I replay that level.
@@TimFisheroo well he is still mad at me for hitting him with the controller every time I was in the stage selection screen.
Just want to point out this one is not VR ready so you will not be able to "wave" at him sadly
PS5 was the best launch of a product ever made in the entire observable universe
The completionist in me cringed when he missed that big coin at 10:12 😂
Astrobot in PSVR was pure magic.
Great video as always, John!
Terrific video! There has been a ton of Astro footage circulating early this week, but this video dives deep! So much more detailed analysis here, and I dig your enthusiasm, John!

Just got a PS5, this game is magical. Had a massive smile on my face all the way through.
The graphics are amazing as is the music and the haptic feedback is outstanding.
Full game please!
Well, that was great to watch. Thanks John
Digital Foundry is on another level. This one impressions video is better than all of the other PS5 content on UA-cam combined. Also, gratz on your LG CX, it is a fantastic display!
I think this is the 1st time in decades where i think I might get a console instead of upgrading my PC
Great time for both options because of AMD. PS5 is amazing value for money if you don’t care about the UHD drive.
@@EeekiE Let's see what happens with Big Navi. There's a rumor that Nvidia released the 30 series of cards already, but I haven't seen any evidence of that in stores.
honestly im thinking the same , im so tired of cheaters not even kidding... still i'll use my pc aswell for other stuff
I mean, it’s not like you HAVE to upgrade it to continue using it ?
How did he not know that the game is literally completely Ray traced? The first level is called Ray traced Meadows. In fact the entire game is all about showing off the PlayStation's power with literally every aspect. You completely undermined and under sold the game.
It's a celebration of Sony's history with gaming and a brilliant showcase of the system's technical power with Ray tracing and graphically intense environments
When a free pack in title is better than anything on Xbox.

You are the best DF Presenter. Articulate, authentic, upbeat and yet still willing to state when things don't feel or look as good as they should. Kudos to you sir!
You being excited about a game, John, excites me in return :)
Digital Foundry is honestly incredibly underrated for their attention to detail that most (if not all) other sites and journalists miss.
They are the most acknowledged tech reviewers in the scene. What more do you want?
God I love that cave music from the VR levels.
That track and all the variations on it in Rescue Mission are so good. I hope we get another version somewhere in Astro's Playroom.
I'm replaying Rescue Mission now and music is great. Really hope Astrobot becomes a franchise.
Great job on the voice over, John.
"Nintendo like" is the first thing I thought of when I saw footage of this game. I'm hearing it's the best pack in game since Wii Sports. I'm really excited to get my hands on that controller and to play Astro Bot. More than anything I can't wait to play Demon's Souls. Hyped beyond belief.
Wii Sports, HEXIC HD and NINTENDOLAND have been the only pack-in titles of the last 14 console launches....just saying.
This is very Mario Sunshine and Sonic Adventure inspired... and that's a good thing. Can't wait to hold the controller for myself.
You will not regret it. The PS family welcomes you and I Know the exclusives will make you stay. ;)
@A World Under A Spell lol no
Every company has their perks.
Looks super clean. Actually looks a really interesting game.
Hey John, would love to have DF Retro H2O Part 3. That series is incredible. The water in this game brought that to mind. Can’t wait to play this.
Your explanation is impeccable, love the way you explained the features allowed me to really understand how it works 💯 can’t wait to play this
3:16 anyone catch the reference to the PS3 using the Spider-Man font lol
You mean the big, launch PS3 in the middle of the screen? Kinda hard to miss, don’t you think?
@@MegaRayland I think he means the quote on the top left "With great power..."
With great power it becomes really hard to develop games for it.
@@MegaRayland you aren’t old enough to understand the reference, it’s okay
I've owned a PS5 since December last year. Seven months later and every once in a while I go back and re-install this game. It's just so simple yet so fun. The first time you wear the suit and need to close the zipper, the vibration is just exactly what you feel in real life. Just fantastic.
I'm considering buying a PS5 just for this, Rescue Mission being one of mu all time favourite games.
You want to spend 500$ for one game experience?
John Linneman is the best ... God bless you man ☺️
This was amazing on psvr. Really hope Sony have next gen hmd in works
Art direction is quite pleasing tbf. On par with the latest Crash.
I clicked so fast. I can’t wait to see the comparisons between these next gen consoles.
not surprisingly, this channel gives the best detailed description of how the haptic feedback feels. That's why I'm here.
With the extra controller features over the previous gen console and ultra fast SSD hardware Sony is really innovating, and both versions of the console run at the same speed - just with or without a Blu-Ray Drive.
Great footage, great discussion, and great sequencing. This is what I come to DF for
6:42 Not that going gold means anything, aint that right CDProjekt Red?
Going gold means what it means. They are still going to be printing disc from the same master version.
Stop being an a***ole.
Ironically, they delay is cause the next gen consoles... -_-.
It was gold plated, you should have read the small print
Honestly I love this game I'm proud of the team!
great touch with the comparison between initial and updated version. as expected with df’s attention to detail.
Thanks for the content DF. Keep it up guys!

The collectable George Foreman reminded me of the early PS3 days and Super Rub-A-Dub! What a game!
i like how in the dust storm on the beach the fans in the background are spinning in reverse yet the wind is still somehow blowing st the character. fun little detail that i noticed
I've been so excited for this!
The only hands on I've been waiting. Hope to see more about PS5 from you guys very soon :D
Wow Xbots are groveling at Sony's feet! The power of PS5 is overwhelming!!

Digital Foundry doing a badass job once again. Thanks for the info.
Looks like the type of game you remember from when you were a kid. Good fun !
Love your enthousiasm John! Thank you 😉👍🏻
We need more this kind of game, easy to play and fun. More like 90’s Ps1 and early 2000’s Ps2 era, fun characters, fun gameplay that everyone can play and enjoy. Unlike games nowadays which is mostly First person shooter (serious/too realistic games). Don’t get me wrong, serious/realistic games are fun too, but 90’s & 2000’s games have different “fun”
Yep, we need more Crash, Spyro, Sly Cooper, Little Big Planet, Ratchet & Clank, Jack and Daxter, Conker, and Banjo-Kazooie type games.
Little big Planet and Ratchet and Clank ? Crash trilogy, spyro remaster ? There are plenty of those games out there
If you dig these kind of games, you should get a Switch too if you don't have one yet. ;)
Search indie game in steam, good luck
We don't need more copies of Nintendo games like this.
You can just hear this dudes passion. I love it! Thanks for actually describing in detail what the controller feels like. I have a better idea now and it sounds crazy cool. I can see why developers are excited about it and are developing with it in mind!
Man.... just two more weeks!!!!
I hope that Developers will finally use the gyro for gyro aim, its just such an overlooked feature of the ps3 and ps4 controllers and only nintedo is using gyro aims despite sony having it way longer in there controllers
Its in tluo2 and its soooo good. Combat in the last of us playes so different and its very satisfying to play with gyro on
Sixaxis wouldn't be able to do it no? It wasn't very precise at the time. Devs on PS4 though should've tried implementing it in more games.
@@bonjoramigos6068 I have to try that
I only experienced it on the PS Vita with Uncharted Golden Abyss where you could tilt the system to get fine aiming and I've missed it ever since, it felt so incredibly intuitive and natural.
I am in love with this game now *_* I get the impression that it feels & plays phenomenal! Thanks for the informative video Foundry, This place is one of the best gaming channels on YT.
Good to hear that it's locked 60fps. I watched a video yesterday and it looked hitchy but I guess that was due to the capture not the actual game. Thanks as always John
